EA disabling purchased copies of Rock Band iOS? [Yes / No / Maybe / Bear's Driving!]

It´s pretty silly to avoid all digital downloads because some are assholes. If we can´t take that good with the bad, we will never get anywhere with anything.

Yes we should be promoting companies with good behaviour, not punishing everyone. That sends a message that respect for your customer equals sales and that's all these publishers care about.

Right this is a DRM issue, and not an inherent DD issue. DD from GoG could never have this happen whereas something like this could very easily happen with a physical UBI game or other publisher's game that has an always on DRM scheme.

If it wasn't in the FAQ, they actually could get away with just saying it was an error and people would believe them.

But considering it was in the FAQ....they are just outright lying to their customers. How stupid do they think we are?

So let's this straight:

1) EA puts out message saying the game will end (tailored to the game)
2) Puts a FAQ on its help site confirming it
3) Puts out a press release saying it was "sent in error"
4) Pulls FAQ page

Who the fuck do they think they're kidding?

They are basically lying to themselves and their customers at this point.

:lol at the bullshit change in opinion.

That being said, there is a very small possibility that it was all in error as the message is completely generic and you can replace "Rock Band" with any other game. Not backing them up but there's a 0.01% chance they're not bullshitting. But it's EA so it's definitely not beyond them. It's kinda hard to accidentally send out a message to all app owners.

Dear rockers, thanks for rocking out with us.

EA has officially backed off.

Update: We have received the following statement from EA: "Rock Band for iOS will remain live - the in-app message users received yesterday was sent in error. We apologize for the confusion this caused. We're working to clarify the issue that caused the error and will share additional information as soon as possible.

Right, so by that logic they can legally come into your home and take your physical copy of a game if they dont want to support it anymore?

Maybe the next gen game systems will come with DVD or bluray writers as the drive and games will come on rewritable media. Then when a company decides not to support a game you purchased, they send a signal out and the next time you put in that game, the system wipes it clean.

I'm calling Poe's Law on this, because as ridiculous as the idea sounds, I wouldn't be surprised if a company like EA did such a thing.

READ THE EULA's

Weak excuse tbh. Every game is sold these days as a product you get to keep. If they arent explicitly stating in big bold letters at point of sale that "We can take this off you with no warning" then they are being deceitful at best and thieves at worst.

Not really.

There was a South Park episode that touched on this subject, I think you would enjoy it in abundance.

YES THAT IS WHAT I PASS AS LATE NIGHT HUMOR.

There is no other comparable product in existence where ownership of a copy can be rescinded remotely and without recourse.

It is quite simply wrong that they can (and do) do this. I know what the law supposedly is. I know what the EULA Defence Force says it is, as your compatriots like ccp is king regularly remind us. But there is an old saying that is somewhat salient here:

"If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck."

Everything EA is doing here has the distinct whiff of theft about it.

READ THE EULA's
EULAs are worthless in the EU and they're still pulling this shit over here as well. Doesn't the US have any limitations in this regard?

The EU basically says "EULAs are always bad for the customer and if you fail to point out everything in that EULA before purchase, it's worthless". That means, every time I click "I accept" just to make something work, I don't accept anything. The fact that I've paid for the product gives me access to it, and I don't have to get into any kind of agreement afterwards.

Nah, it just means that the EULA has to be available to read before opening the shrink wrap, for example on their website.

Companies need to have the right to pull the plug, or they'd get sued if they discontinued the service. But obviously EA (and Sony) are abusing this right.

Ok that right there is 10x more ridiculous and unbelievable than disabling RB. Up to $99 DLC and a $29 annual subscription to a 99¢ iOS Tetris. It's absolutely amazing and astonishing that a company would have the gall to even offer such options.

no. Removing one game from sale, and replacing it with another game for sale is no different from angry birds to angry birds space, or Fifa 10 -> Fifa 11. You can still play the old game.

This is (was) going to stop you being able to play the game after a set date, thats very different.

Randomvince seems eagerly defensive ... I'm starting to wonder ...

Defensive about what? Spell it out if youre going to insinuate anything.

As far as I'm concerned, EA are the worst thing to happen to gaming. Don't know how you could confuse that for defending anything, other than basic consumer rights.

The key word here is "eager".

As in you are trying to be offended, as if not being offended will somehow invalidate what you are actually offended by.

You do come off that way.

I mean, you did just imply that I and other users you don't like were all involved in some sort of secret Plant conspiracy.

It won't matter if they don't patch it to not require any use of online. Once they do that I think it can potentially be trusted.

A mistake. Sure.

Watch, EA and a few other companies will do this a few more times then pull back at the last second. The furor among gamers will be lessened with each incidence. That's when they spring it for real. It's a kind of social engineering. Carefully manufactured malaise. All it takes is time. And it does work every time. Do you think a law like the SOPA legislation wont be back? It will be. And again and again and again, it will be back. As many times as it takes. Because eventually people get tired of fighting. Works every time.

Do you really think that the same company that renders their Madden games unplayable online after just 2 years in order to push people into buying the newest version would have any problem with totally abandoning a small iOS game? This is the forefront of the DD future most game publishers have been dreaming about.

I'm not trying to rile anybody up to do something about it. Quite the opposite. I'm saying don't bother doing anything about it. Because they will just keep coming at you with this kind of thing until you finally give up fighting. Get a small percentage to agree that it's a good idea and work up from there. Eventually you get enough people that agree that "used game sales are killing the industry"...oops meant to say "it's their software, they can do whatever they want with it. you only bought a license to use the software".

Good post.

It was a tongue in cheek suggestion, but you have to admit that it's a bit suspect seeing people so willing to defend bad corporate decisions that directly harm consumers. It's often the same names all doing the justification for these practices.

I don't dislike any of you, but I do find your argument to be particularly odious.

Love how sites like the Verge simply report that there was an "error" without any of the actual happenings with this situation. Gotta keep that ad money flowing I guess
