I skipped the DSi and DSi XL, so I can find my way to justifying this purchase - especially if I can transfer all my stuff/Club Nintendo acct/ambassador status from my regular 3DS.

Hm, the Zavvi price is tempting - but I am only at home during the 27th/28th/29th of July...and there's no guarantee that their delivery will actually arrive on time.

i jst read up on your question. Just put your dired card iin the new system and hit the transfare option in the menu. The pikmins willl do the rest.

ok, so it doesn't transfer all the data from one sd card to the other?, the transfer "unlocks" all the data so you can download it from the e-shop? but what about your videos and pics, use a PC?

So... how does the 3D look? Were you wowed the first time you saw it? Does it look like watching a 3D movie with the red and blue glasses? This will be my first time playing a 3DS, so I don't know.

I was expecting to be amazed by the 3D when I first used it but was really let down.

And no, nothing at all like RedBlue glasses. It's waaaay better than that.
It's a nice affect that seems to give some "fullness" to games. It's hard to describe, but I generally like it.

Honestly, I can't even play games in 2D anymore after experiencing 3D. With 3D, you get a sharper image and a wider field of view, and of course there's the sense of depth, which really adds a lot to games. It's certainly not just some gimmick. You have to make sure that you give your eyes enough time to adjust to the 3D, though. Chances are it will look kinda weird when you first try it out. Keep playing with it for awhile and it should become normal to you, though. I can't stress that enough, because there are a lot of people who don't use the 3D long enough for their eyes to adjust, and they just end up turning the 3D off and never turning it back on.
Completely agree, although I do think that in most games (Kid Icarus and 3D Land being obvious exceptions) it is gimmicky. Apart from Virtual Console games, I always leave the 3D on.
Yep. I 100% agree.
It takes about a week or so to get use to it. It's better to start out with the 3D low and then work your way up.
I currently play all games with the 3D turned up all the way.

I think the 3D is a really impressive effect. I play every game on full max 3D. From what I understand the screen is actually displaying two different images at slightly different angles, so your brain organizes it into a 3D looking image. It's much much better than red/blue 3D which frankly looks terrible.
Heavily depends on the game. For some games like Pullblox or Zen Pinball, 3D adds so much - not just eyecandy, but actually useful visual information - that they seem broken if you turn 3D off. For most games, it doesn't make a huge difference whether it's on of off, and in some cases, 3D can even be distracting. But you almost always notice something is "missing" if you play the game for a while in 3D, then switch to 2D.
Have you seen a recent 3D movie? It gives the same effect as that basically, but without glasses it feels more "special" lol. It can also vary from game to game. Some games look amazing and others...not so much.

To my knowledge, nothing's been said about the region-locking, so I think it's safe to assume it's the same as the original 3DS.
The funny thing about this is that people would be saying the exact same thing if they did put a second Circle Pad on the 3DS XL. Original 3DS owners would be upset and demanding some kind of apology. Nintendo really just can't win no matter what, people will always complain...
Bleh, guess the wait continues until Nintendo wises up or someone cracks the 3DS and puts homebrew on it. I need my Senran Kakura man!

Haha, exactly. As an original 3DS owner I would be pretty pissed if more and more games started coming out with "Better on XL!" on the box. Just design the game with one stick in mind and everything will be fine.
I imagine region locking would make it a massive pain in the ass in the long run unless they stop that.
Now I want a white inside/orange outside creamsicle system.
Looking at the pictures I'm wondering how easy/hard it would be to switch the outside color panels. Like on the top half there's four little square rubber bits on the top half, I'm guessing there's tiny screws under them.

Never tried it myself, and don't plan on to since there is a lifetime 5-time transfer limit... But pictures, videos, and sound files not stored in the system's internal memory but on the SD card has to be transferred via PC (or copied over to the internal memory prior to the transfer if you have the space). Dunno about the apps though... there's conflicting information on Nintendo's site as to whether only the license data transfer over or the apps themselves.

Hey! I've done a transfer before. What happens is all of your data saved to system memory will transfer, saving itself to your new 3DS and erasing itself from the old.
All information on the SD card stays on the original card which remains in the original 3DS whilst transferring. When the transfer is complete, the 3DS instructs you to remove the SD card from the initial system and to place it in the new one.
Once this has been done, everything on the card (downloads, save data, photos, MP3s, etc) are all accessible on the new system.
That's all there is to it. You don't copy from one card to the next and no PC or back-up is required. It's a simple and surprisingly elegant process really.
So, once you've done that and re downloaded all(?) your games again, is your save data intact?

No re-downloading is necessary for a single game or application.
As long as you keep the SD cards in their necessary places within both units and crucially only remove them when instructed to then everything, as in absolutely everything will transfer across and be accessible on the new unit, right down to your step count and coin total on that very day.

Good to know that the tranfer process is that easy, though I really wish there was a way to do it without both consoles being present. I wonder if GameStop would let me trade-in a 3DS for credit towards a 3DS XL but do a transfer before I leave the store. Anyone done this in the past?
It needs the SD Card that contains all of your data for the old 3DS. The new 3DS(XL) must also have an SD Card with a capacity that can hold the same amount of data as the SD Card of your old system. System Transfer basically is one big "official" copy-and-paste, and gives your new system all of the rights and privillages your old system has while formatting your old system, so you don't have to re-enter all of your Club Nintendo data or earn all of those stationery from SwapNote all over again.

I'd like to see the unit in person before I make a puchase decision, and even then I won't probably be buying the ones out the gate as they aren't the colors I want. I'd also have to invest in a belt pouch to carry the thing around.
Yes! I can't believe how many people ask the most obvious questions on here that have already been heavily discussed online, or are easily answered in the manual or on the official website. The System Transfer feature was discussed to death back when that update came out, and full details on how System Transfer works have been available on Nintendo's website ever since.
If someones screws up and ends up losing their data because they didn't bother to read about how System Transfer works (and believe me, I'm sure there will be quite a few), I'm not going to feel bad for them, lol. It's their own fault.
I think it has been said earlier that the transfer requires a connection to the Internet. So unless the Gamestop has free Wi-fi, or you can create a hotspot with a 3G device, you're probably out of luck and will have to trade the 3DS in after.
To everyone who is thinking of pre-ordering from Gamestop: Be sure to check up on your different retailers. There may be a $20 gift card offered with purchase. They did this with the Midnight Purple 3DS, can't see why the same won't be done with the XL.
Of course, if you're trading in your 3DS towards an XL, then you've already made up your mind.

If anyone's wondering what the 3DS XL's top screen will look like, and happen to have a 23" 1920x1080 monitor, you can look at a native 400x240 3DS screenshot and see almost exactly how big and sharp the top screen is. (They both have a pixel density of about 95.6.)

The internet is used to confirm eShop purchases so that their rights transfer. Same thing with DSiWare.
This is ironic because you just described the transfer incorrectly. There is no copy and paste of the card and you don't even need a card in the second system.
You will use the same original card from the first 3DS in the new 3DS.

ok, i'm a bit confused now.
Say i currently have a 32gb card in my 3ds and I want that in my XL.
Would I need to:
- copy 32gb stuff to the old 2gb card.
- put in 3ds.
- stick 32gb card in XL.
- do transfer thing.

Why are you making this so difficult.
Copy data from the original SD card to the new one.
Then transfer your 3DS data from there original to the new one.
Simple.
