Demon's Souls |OT2| Soulsuckingly brilliant RPG full of Demon's Crack

I finally beat the game for the first time. Never thought I'd finish this game a few weeks ago when I went back to give it another chance. I ended up finishing at soul level 79 I believe or 71. I forget but it was in the 70's. My dragon long sword was my go to weapon for the second half of the game. That thing is the best. I cheap killed a few bosses but only after failing to beat them honorably the first time. Most shameful kill was the last boss guy who I killed with poison cloud + thief ring - took about 20 minutes of waiting for him to die of poisoning. :p

Most hated levels were world 3. The octopus guards will forever haunt my dreams. I hate them with all my being. I cant wait to go back and use anti-magic field around there and pound the shit out of them.

My game glitches and I never got the mausoleum key. Ostrava never appeared for me in 1-3 or 1-4 where he should have been. Boo that man. Going to kill him the first chance I get in NG+. I've already started NG+ and beat 1-1. Didn't seem much harder.

Anyways it was a great game.

Yeah I got my Ostrava glitched out the first time as well but it's pretty rewarding to see his little event so I happy he "worked" the second time.

Today I spent time killing people as the Old Monk's puppet.
It was fun being the boss.
I ended up in the end with like 15 head wrap.

So I just finished this on the weekend. I was a little underwhelmed by the end run... I'd already killed the False King before doing 5-2, 5-3 and he was much harder than anything else in the game.

Overall, I enjoyed Dark Souls more. I went through 1-1 on NG+, and that was cool. I'll probably slowly work through NG+, but I should give it a rest for a little while.

Startet to play this yesterday after finally getting a hold onto a ps3 and i´m really disapointed with the first 3 bosses i killed so far. Phalanx, Adjudicator and Fool´s Idol where just 1sttry pushovers. Hope it ramps up after the first bosses of every stone.

Just got this game and it's pretty great, though I'm not thrilled with being gimped in soul form. On a related note, is there any hope that I will be summoned to help with a boss or is the online deserted? I've only tried with the boss on 1-1, and come to think of it my SL might be too high for that. If I'm around SL 25 what would be the best place to try to get summoned so I can get my stupid body back?

Your barbarian run is really impressive and entertaining. Defeating the bosses in really long fights under those conditions must be really satisfying. Also impressed that you seem to go through levels the long way, picking up every item even if you don't use it and not skipping anything optional. Definitely inspires me to pop in DeS and try some new runs, but not something this insane :D Do you think you could do a deprived run in Dark Souls without upgrading the club? Four Kings seems like it would be absolutely impossible with an unupgraded weapon and low stats. They were hard enough SL1 with a maxed lightning hand axe and pyro flame.

I would like to try a deprived run on Dark Souls, but I can tell it is going to be a much more difficult uphill attempt. For one, you can't stockpile herbs in the same way, and many bosses are just plain more difficult I think.

BUT, maybe there are some good tricks to utlize with falling attacks and jumping and the new things that Dark Souls offers. It may not be for a bit. I haven't played Dark Souls in a while, so I have more ramping up to do before I could do a confident recording of it. I'll keep you guys posted though! I would probably try a SL1 run first, just to grease the wheel so to speak.

Have tried to get summoned alot aswell and searched for a summon sign but hadn´t any luck with both. So i guess EU is kinda deserted. Also didn´t get invaded once and i´m "alive" all the time.

I'm picking this game up this weekend. I played it for a little bit and found teh game really rewarding. Any tips? Anything thing that will help me to enjoy the game to the fullest?

Grind the Red-Eyed Knight in 1-1 to get the Purple Flame Shield, or just get Pure White Tendency for it. Grinding the knight will improve your combat and reflex skills, get you accustomed to fighting other hard enemies, and the PFS comes in very handy later on.

Really? You're suggesting he should grind a single enemy in the first level to get the most enjoyment?

My suggestions:
  • Don't try and do all the levels in order (instead of doing 1-1, 1-2, 1-3,2-1..., etc. just do 1-1, 2-1, 4-1, 1-2, etc., in whichever order you find easier/more fun) and to try and play all the X-1 levels before commiting to one. The loot you'll find in some of those levels is very useful, such as talismans for casting miracles.
  • Don't worry too much about character and world tendency. Jist of it is if you want white char tendency, don't be an asshole and kill people, if you want black, do the opposite; world tendency depends on online, but if you're playing offline it gets whiter the more bosses you kill and darker the more times you die in soul form.
  • Get the Cling Ring on 1-1. Search for it until you find it. You'll be using it throught the whole game.
  • Don't consume the demon's soul you get from the boss in 2-2.
  • If you're stuck, play some other level to clear your head. Find comfort in what you learned from your death and try not to think about the souls you just lost, because you can get them back, easily even (there are worlds that are very easily farmable for both healing grass and souls).
  • Ask GAF and GAF will help :)

Hey guys, a question:

I completed 1-1, wondering which world is best to do next? I have a melee build, purple flame shield, and cling ring. Looking to also get the +7 winged spear.

Good suggestions too man!

But no I was just giving a small tip on what might be beneficial training for later areas and enemies, the REK is the perfect early enemy to really get the grip of the distances, timings, and when and when not to be cautious in tight situations...plus the PFS is an added benefit for later areas. Namely, World 2, and 1-3 and 1-4.

2-1 is easiest after 1-1. World 2 in general is pretty easy, compared to 3 and 5.

Oh, yeah, that's probably right, though I'd try to avoid grinding as much as possible if it were me.

I have a general question for strategy: in the early stages of the game, is there any benefit to saving souls or should I just spend them when I can? I know I shouldn't be anal-retentive about losing souls, but I get the urge to just dump all of them into upping the stats.

For reference, I'm a level 7-ish knight and after just finishing 1-1, I've moved onto 3-1. Those damn Cthulhu guards keep fucking my mental shit up, so I usually give up after unlocking a few doors. I found a mist doorway, but saw too many dark hallways and just ran back to the Nexus like a sissy. I love this game.

2-1 is a good place to start, like xkylon said. Since you're using a melee build, the 2-2 boss will probably be pretty tough for you, but if you want to try it the path to the boss is really short once you know where he is.

1-2 was the second level I did, and it never seemed like it was too tough for my current Soul Level.

You could also try the first section in each world. If you manage to get past 4-1, the rest of the 4-x levels are pretty easy.

I spent nearly all of my souls on leveling up, so as far as I know that's the best way to go.

Yeah, fix your equipment, and then blow it in soul levels, specially if you're not a mage. You'll want to save your souls later for spells, miracles and upgrades, but for now, just level up.

Oh man. At the beginning of the Penetrator fight I aggroed Biorr and suddenly the fight became insanely hard. It changed from me and Biorr fighting a bad ass Penetrator to me fighting Penetrator + Biorr -_-

BTW I always forgot how bad ass this boss was.

Hello Gaf, first post in here.

So I just bought this game over the weekend and can't beat the 1-1 Level, I picked Knight but I can't beat the Red Eyed Knight.

I think I will start a new Character but this time a Temple Knight, some friends have told me is a great class for starting up.

Anyway I just wanted to say hi and that Im loving this game.

Looking forward to it. A DkS SL1 run isn't that hard, you can use pyromancy and an upgraded handaxe or reinforced club is pretty strong. I imagine Demon's SL1 is harder. I plan on doing that soon.

That is awesome. I really like that fight but I've never found it very challenging. That sounds fun, I've aggrod Biorr outside of that fight before and iirc he can take quite a beating.

I like the temple knight class - you start with the halberd, which I love.

Don't worry about the Red Eyed Knight for now - there's no reason to kill him or go that way yet.

Playing short bursts of this game is a good idea. It really helps to have a clean head when playing it, since it can get frustrating fast and snowball on you. On the other hand, don't overstretch or you'll forget stuff :p

Yes, though even if I wanted it to I can't play more, this saturday I played from 6pm to 11pm and I couldn't pass that Red Eye Knight and unitll now that I know I wasnt suposed to kill him rigth away, I knew this game was hard but I was starting to think that something wasn't right.

At some point I was maybe a hit away to kill him but it seemed impossible.

If you are obsessed with killing the Red Eyed Knight before moving on, like I was. Here's a few tips for a starting character.

-Get as close to him as possible when you aggro him, use the Thief Ring if necessary. This is because you'll be backpedaling most of the encounter, so try not to get pushed back into the room. Also use Turpentine if you can because it will deal a lot of damage.

-Always keep your shield up, use the best shield you have with the most physical damage reduction.

-Wait for him to initiate his attacks, be passive and defensive with him, and only attack him when he rebounds off your shield. Be wary of his charge attack that he tends to launch after you land a hit sometimes, just keep that shield up and he'll rebound, then hit him again. Keep a relatively close distance from him to maximize the chance of him not rebounding too far away from a attack opportunity, or a R2.

-If you need to regen stamina, wait for a rebound and move backwards a bit to let it regen. If he breaks your guard, roll to the side, never backwards, then regen stamina or if you need to heal. Be very careful of healing because he'll take quick advantage of that, either totally retreat and come back or roll to the side and heal.

-The most dangerous weapon he has early on is really his shield bash, this will break your guard early and will be the biggest reason why you need to keep backing up, so just back away when he does it. You can attack him directly after he does this, but it's dangerous if you miss, so the best thing to do is just wait for him to stop shield bashing and attack, rebound and then hit him.

-When his health is low he will begin to walk backwards slowly to heal, do not let him get too far away! Stay somewhat close and wait for him to start his heal animation and unleash a strong R2, maybe 2 R2's. But be careful because if that doesn't kill him off he often does his deadly charge attack. If he's not dead yet, just wait for him to start trying to back up and heal, and then take him out.

Great early and satisfying battle to win. Or you could cheese him near the shortcut stairs, but I won't recommend or shine light on that lame strategy.

Other minor notes: The Scimitar you find in 1-1 has a very powerful and quick R2, which you can use every time he rebounds with little risk, you just have to close the distance a little, and you can double it up when he goes to heal with good results. Although the longsword has a better reach with it's R2, and maybe more damage, so it's a better distance tool. But both do fine and are great with Turpentine for killing him. And he has a really good rare drop if you're lucky.

I killed only Penetrator and now every time I go there Biorr snipes me with his crossbow haha :D

Thank you ArynCrinn for those tips and strategy, if I feel the "need" again to kill him I will def use those.

I reached a place where there is one dragon in a hill sleeping and another destroying everything of a bridge, didn't risk it though and I returned to the Nexus and turn it off, will see if I can get pass that bridge today, but before that I got a Purple Shield, and The Scimitar, both Rings (Thief and Cling) and prety much all what I could find, I will not lost all right? if I returned to the Nexus and quit.

You only lose your souls when you die (and your human form, if you had it). All your items and equipment will still be there when you respawn.

No problem, and it seems like you've got all the needed loot from 1-1. Upgrade that Purple Flame Shield as much as you can, it'll come in handy. Also if you get PWWT you can go back to where the dragons are nesting, they won't be there, and you'll get another good Ring, another PFS, and a bunch of grass and a Shard of Archstone. Plus, PWWT opens up a area in 1-1 with very special loot and a new tough enemy.

New strategy forthcoming for this enemy if you ever need it! =D

Easiest way to get Pure White is by defeating bosses, mainly while not dying too much. So if you just beat Phallax, go and beat the boss in 1-2, and you should have pure white, assuming it's almost there right now.

And yeah it's fine to unequip anything and everything. The Ring you'll find at the dragon's nest in 1-1 will be Ring of Great Strength which will allow you to move faster with more weight equipt, it's a great equip burden ring.

Also trade Stockpile Thomas the little pendent you picked up in 1-1, I forgot the name, by talking to him a lot, and he'll give you the Ring of Herculean Strength, which is a item burden ring.

Nice stuff, can't remember if I picked up a Pendent where I am but I will check tonight, I got an advise that after I beat t his level I go right away to 4-1 because there is a great Sword there.

The "pendent" I was talking about is the Jade Hair Ornament.

Sword in 4-1 everybody refers to is the Crescent Falchion, which is actually really useful for 2-2, and it's boss. You can basically just rush by the enemy guarding it, grab it, and head back to the archstone and go where ever from there.

Is Dirty Colossus supposed to be a joke boss? There's this giant arena and he literally just stood in one spot while I was beating the crap out of him. I'm not even sure if he tried to hit me or not. Felt kind of bad tbh.

OTOH, right after that I killed Garl Vinland without any trouble but then nearly got killed by Astrea and those things in the water.

Him and Leechmonger are pretty damn easy on the first playthrough, especially if you kill them with fire. Newgame+ makes you work the pattern a little.

And I've only killed Astrea once by fighting her, usually I use the "talk" function. ;)

Phalanx is gone, surprisingly it was very easy, like I didn't got hit easy, even without Fire Bombs or Surpentine (thats the name right?) it was a long fight but I had teh patience to beat it.

Now I wanted to go to 4-1 for that weapon but how do I know whats 4-1?

Got destroyed by those skeletons in 4-1, any good strategy?
Block them when they roll up to you, drop your shield when you see them starting their charged slash attack animation so you regain some endurance, then roll/move to the side and when they miss just go at them. Sometimes you may even pull a backstab there, which helps a lot. It's also better to pick them one at a time, taking advantage of the Thief Ring.

Also, like in every RPG ever, blunt weapons work best against the undead, so if you find a mace you could do them some real damage, specially early on.

They are relentless, but I think I can manage them, I only need to die at least 50 more times in order to get the strategy done :D

Thanks for the tips.

Yeah just block them as they roll forward, block their next strike, and then heavy attack followed by another slash should do the trick. If they pull their sword back for a heavy heavy attack, just roll out of the way and attack. Keep at it and you'll eventually get comfortable fighting them. Be patient and you'll be rewarded with an area that gives you a TON of good items.

Oh and when you meet the "trader", I wouldn't feel bad looking up an faq on what to do since I can't think of any way to reason out what you're supposed to do and what will happen.

Area 4-1 is pretty difficult, if you're having problems with it, you can try 2-1 first so you come back to 4-1 with a few more souls levels and combat experience. There are some good items in 4-1, but they're not mandatory.

Made me laugh out loud.

Also encountered some kinda of lizard but it scaped and I couldnt kill it.
