didn't NBC cut the entire tribute to the tragedy from their coverage of the Opening ceremony?

thats wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more offensive than some off the cuff remark on twitter.

I thought that was what Wilbury was talking about.

There were a couple facetious remarks and jokes about 7/7 yesterday in the Olympics thread. Outunderthestars suggested that the opening ceremony justified the Taliban/Al Qaeda's actions, for one.

It doesn't appear that she has made any comments in the past that would put her tweet in the negative context. It's entirely innocuous. The same comment is made all the time whether a shooting has happened are not. Americans liking their guns and by extension probably being good at shooting things is an extremely popular meme. I don't understand the "outrage" here at all. And I'm on the side of gun regulation.

Is it racist to associate blacks people with ebonics?

Yes it is. The term "ebonics" is racist. It infers that Black people, as a whole, speak some sub-component of English.

So it hasn't at all evolved out of Ebonics, a distinctly African American dialect?

Again, the term is racist in nature. I am Black and guess what? I speak English. I'm American as well.

In your mind, am I speaking the incorrect language, given your association of Black people = Ebonics?

It's not racist. And nobody said as a whole. African American Vernacular English (or ebonics) is a real thing.

Awesome.

So where is the equivalent link of the European_American_Vernacular_English for White people that speak broken English?

The closest thing I saw was

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_American_English

which doesn't specifically identify one race but rather the region. The fact that it tries to identify Black people as the sole speakers of this "language" is what makes it racist. It is a broken version of English that has direct ties to Southern American English but to be cute or whatever, it was deemed "Ebonics".

As I said before, I don't speak "Ebonics" and the poster, Gavin GT, was making it out as though Black people = Ebonics. He didn't say some or Southern Black people...he said Black people.

What point are you attempting to make? That I referred to it as "broken English?"

The point is, there is no equivalent (wiki page and whatnot) for White people that speak an, uh..."different" dialect of English than the American norm.

Where is the Ivorionics page?

That's why it's racist, imo.

The term hick could be used to describe a white subculture that can also cover a pattern of speech.

i.e. he or she talks like a goddamn hick.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I dont think the poster who got banned intended to be racist and offend anyone with that crappy joke about ghetto talk. If he did and has a history of doing that kind of shit, then good riddance and here's hoping its a perma.

Do you consider something like the "LOL WHITE PEOPLE" gifs around GAF racist? Are they even bannable?
I'm white and I always laugh at those lol

No one ever said, "He or She speaks like a gotdamn Ebonics"

The derogatory term, "hick" is not used to exclusively describe a sub-language type for a group of people.

It is (unjustly) used to pre-judge a person based on a number of things that may include language, similar to other racial titles given to several races,(that don't involve language alone).

I wasn't addressing him at all, since he was banned before I got here.

I was addressing GavinGT's comments.

I don't feel ebonics is racist or wrong either. There's no universal correct language. Ebonics, at least in every context I see, is used to describe the dialect that we're all pretty familiar with now.

Annnnd that's why it's a sensitive area for me. When I have people (I have never met before) give me a look of shock when I speak and then proceed to tell me, "Wow, you speak so well" it can be directly tied to an expectation that because I'm Black, I must speak "Ebonics".

And before you say, "Well, maybe they just felt you spoke well and wanted to tell you...gosh, that's not racist, ryutaro's mama!"just know that, throughout my entire life, I have been in the company of White friends that speak equally well (in some cases better) and I'm ALWAYS the one singled out for this "praise".

Not a single one of them have ever been told that.

Ever.

I don't see how this is a response to the bolded. When I think of the word ebonics I think of the dialect. Ebonics is just the default word. When you break that word up it may be offensive but it's really just describing the culture of origin. I agree people who give you praise for speaking average American English are out of line.

I don't see how this is a response to the bolded.

It's a response because, when you say it's

the dialect that we're all pretty familiar with now.

to that end, you're right, people are familiar with the term and as a result, a lot of (not all) people apply a blanket and assume that that is what Black people speak. (hence, the reason I responded to GavinGT in the first place)

That's where (imo) the shock comes from when I just speak normal English instead of the expected "Ebonics".

Tweet was completely harmless. For a country that goes on and on about free speech and freedom, it seems a lot of people over there get offended really easy.

Oh, alright. I still don't see ebonics as being wrong and don't think any less of the people who use it. If someone who was raised in a small town can understand almost all of what I'd consider a city dialect then it's doing it's job as a language. Thought the bolded part followed by the response meant you disagreed that it should be considered separate from the standard American English language.

Again though, I agree anybody who assumes you'll speak a certain way based on appearance is definitely in the wrong.

So you didn't bother reading what I said and why I said it? Lol k.
I didn't even mention you .... lol

Just everyone is so hyper sensitive these days, sometimes for good reason but I think Bacon is euro lol. It was a horrible joke but to ban him for that? Seems way harsh, but whatever just my opinion. Some people who are not American are not aware that stuff like that is so offensive I doubt that was his intention. Never seen him post like that before , if his history is clean a warning would of sufficed.

I didn't even mention you .... lol.

I'm the one that really had the discussion on it here for the most part. Not sure anyone else did....lol.

Like I said, way to not read what anyone said on the subject and commence to a driveby posting with a "lol".

And for the record, I never once addressed Bacon or whatever his name was.

Everything must be about you. Other people were discussing the term. And its not a driveby post considering this is my 3rd post. A driveby post is when you leave 1 comment to rile ppl up and you never return. Think you should calm down a bit no offense.

I read what everyone said, posted my first after reading the bit when you said ebonics is a racist term then i replied. Then read the rest, not even sure why I am explaining myself to you lol.

Sorry people type like morons on purpose white and black not sure what you would like it to be called. Ebonics is exactly what it is. E-Ebonics I guess.

For the record I think its an interesting discussion but I don't really want to spend time arguing with people

just my present state of mind

I just thought about something...who cares if Bacon was euro or not.

That is somehow an excuse to say the reason that Lolo Jones posted like that is because she was trying to sound Black?

Did they stop having Black people in Europe?

Is that how he as a European thinks Black people speak?

Why in your mind Riggs, does the possibility that he MIGHT be Euro, make that ok?

Can he say why is she typing ghetto? Is that ok? White, spanish, blacks, can all live in ghettos. I am sure that's racist as hell too though to some folks.

Uhm doesn't make it ok but if he doesn't know any better at least that's a better excuse. If you live in some remote place outside of the states maybe he didn't know he was being insensitive? Sorry for not condemning him with an ironfist at zero second hour .... He could be racist as fuck, I don't know!

Yay! Let's play the hypothetical game instead of actually answering what I asked

or

addressing what he DID say which was, "why is she trying to sound Black?"

LOL @ him not knowing any better. He knew enough to say that she was trying to sound Black, based solely on a poorly worded tweet.

But let's look for reasons to make him possibly ignorant of what he was saying!

Sorry for not condemning him with an ironfist at zero second hour .... He could be racist as fuck, I don't know!

Who called for him to be "condemned with an ironfist at zero second hour"? Certainly not I.

You should really calm down dude.

Come on. For him to say, "Why is she trying to talk like she's black?" implies that he has a stereotypical at best, racist at worst viewpoint of black people and how they speak or attempt to portray themselves. It could be ignorance, but bad grammar or shortening tweets are not exclusive to any race. Race really should have never been brought into the discussion, since it was irrelevant to the topic at hand.

lol k I ll calm down, stated my reasons already as to how he may not of known better depending on his location and perhaps upbringing. Maybe he did know, and the ban is justified. I am not his real life friend I do not know ....

And godslay if that's the case the ban is legitimate. I've seen him post tons and never saw any stupid stuff like that before. So i was honestly wondering if he was just that nieve or unaware.

It's VERY terrible timing but personally I don't think that is as bad as the media is hyping it up as. They are acting a little too sensitive.

^^Well said.^^

Now, let's move on. My understanding is that it is bad ettique to discuss bannings and whatnot openly. The tweet was picked up by the media and their current role is to sensationalize for shock value.

I don't understand how drawing conclusions from his sentence deemed him as a racist or stereotypical. There exists a library of words that originated from the African American Vernacular. As such, it is common for people to associate these words with their culture.

It was sarcastic response to where told me to calm down.

...when I've been calm the whole time.

Judging from your post it doesn't seem that way IMO

Thats what I was thinking. Any American who has a shred of awareness about such things would never say that. A lot of non American posters on gaf also and they know better too. But i am sure there are some who do not, if he was one of them I couldn't tell ya.

Anyway my FB feed is filled with friends talking like that and I like to mess with them heh, they are friends though and know its a joke. Hell sometimes I type bad on purpose with them and they call me out because I don't do it right lol.

Is this calm in the same way people don't actually laugh when they type out LOL?

No, I'm actually calm.

We had a conversation here, no yelling (caps locking entire posts, etc.) or name calling.

I'd say it was calm on all sides.

I've seen threads get pretty heated when discussing all things race...this is nothing.

Wow.

Ok, spiderman123.

Tell me all about my culture, since those words (that I don't use, btw) are assigned with my culture.

Please.
