3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I think the left/right sweetspot is better but the 'distance from face' sweetspot is no different.

tbh it also probably depends on how far apart your eyes are along with ambient light, and also whether the content on-screen is predominantly light or dark.

Yeah I'm talking about the left/right sweetspot. And I tried different distances, it didn't help. The 3D image on my original works no matter if the thing is on my lap or 6" in front of my face btw...

Silver/Black-owner here.

the screen is huge when compared directly with my old 3ds. But somehow i like the material of the old version's case more. XL seems a little bit "cheap". Although only a minor complain: i also miss the LED next to the 3d-slider.

But all in all: Bigger is better.

Dipped in silver/black (only one left) today. Almost traded in DSi but then I got sentimental and kept it. My eyes won't adjust on 3D effect that good and trying to get use to it on lowest 3D setting.

Long day ahead testing all old DS games I have :3

That looks great, thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely get this.

I used this case for my DSi XL, but found it a bit too bulky. Great support and really protects the console, though!

I just ordered the same one as well, shame though that the red color case looks more brownish, probably since it was meant for the burgundy unit, so i got the black one instead since my red XL has black on it as well ;P

Hello all gaffers!

Time for my first post ever.

I'm seriously tempted to buy this bad boy. I'm not even sure if i have ever liked to play so much with handheld devices. I mean I liked the original game boy as a kid and have owned pretty much all major handheld devices since then, only to find out that after first few days they start to collect dust on shelf. But damn do these big screens appeal as a sexy for a gadget freak.

I haven't own any of these double screened Nintendo devices though (Game & Watch doesn't count!). Also I can feel my inner Mario fanboy waking up from a long time sleep.

Maybe some kind of "convince me to do this" game list for DS (this was backward compatible right?) and 3DS, would be in place.

I have the red as well, but decided to go with the blue - the only color I really liked of those available. And it's a nice contrast to my red one :p

you have the red XL and got that blue case...?

What madness is this? (i was tempted as well since i liked the blue case color but couldn't do it, or else i'd expect a blue XL to pop out of the case as well, not a red one)

Distance definitely makes a difference - try the 3D calibration screen to test. If I hold it at arms length I can see dark bands on the left and right and can never get a completely clear image. As I bring it towards my face, there is a definite point where the entire screen is clear. Continue to bring it even closer and the dark bands return.

Just watched the Paper Mario and Aninal Crossing 3D trailers on the XL. Absolutely amazing. Can't wait to get those games and play it on the 3DS XL.

Hm, ok. I couldn't get into the menus, because they were running closed demo versions of the games. Maybe it's this. But if not I really don't see myself upgrading to the XL. What I like about the 3DS is how natural the 3D is, also compared to 3D in movies, which are 99% of the time a horrible experience.
Sure, the games looked stunning on the bigger screens, but that is nothing I could appreciate, if the image quality (in this case the 3D effect) is worse. Shitty speakers on top.

I'm really tempted to get an XL but I already have the original and one of the things I like about 3ds is streetpass. I take it few of you guys take your XLs out with you?

Oh fuck. Four Swords is gone from store? I formatted my DSi :S
Assuming you didn't manually delete your shop account, then it should still be available to redownload on your DSi - check your shop activity log to see if its listed in your download history.
If you actually formatted the system AND deleted your shop account, well i'm afraid your out of luck :(

I still don't have a scratch on my 3DS. Smudge marks from the screens touching, yes, but no permanent marks. I take it out with me every day too. Not worried at all about scratching on the XL.

Yes of course in my bag, I've owned handhelds since game and watch and have never carried them around on my pocket so the XL being bigger makes no difference to me.

3D was my biggest issue with 3DS. Sweet spot doesn't seem bigger on the XL but its certainly not worse. And the larger screen really emphasises good 3D - really like looking through a window into a little world

In real life it looks alot more red than in those pictures, just so you know. I have a red one to match my red DSi XL. I just got a blue one to go with my blue 3DS XL. Sexy.

Yup, everything is still there *phew*. Thank you!
Time to check things on how to transfer/copy items.

4 sword is not available. huh that sucks as I'm giving my son my 3ds and getting rid of his dsi, but won't be able to transfer his dsi to my 3ds since I'm trading it in to get the 3ds xl..

What are you talking about? You clearly didn't swap the sd card or something. Everything transfers...

Actually, I believe some things don't transfer. This site agrees with me.

I don't know about four swords, but I know the reasoning behind some things like flipnote studio was that they plan to re-release them in a new version for the 3ds.

I think I messed up the screen protectors... After perfectly applying the VITA ones I was hoping to do a better job.

Perhaps using scotch tape can fix 'em a little bit. Damn two screens means having to apply two screen protectors ;)...

So, to cut a long story short, I've re-evaluated my finances and am picking one of these beauties up today. Huzzah!

However, I can only afford to get 1 game with it.

So Gaf, is there any one game you would recommend above all others? Look at your games collections and imagine you were picking up your XL today...Which one is the must have?

If you've never played Ocarina of Time before, get that. If you have, get Super Mario 3D Land.

I'd say Super Mario 3D Land is the must have of the system, but Kid Icarus or Mario Kart will offer many more hours of game.

Super Mario 3D Land or Zelda: OoT if you're looking for a great game with lots of variation. If you're looking for a game with lost of replay value get Mario Kart 7.

Thanks guys :)

I had totally forgotten about OoT...

This is going to prove more difficult than I thought :(

Perhaps if I buy a couple pre-owned, I'll be able to get two...

Holy shit Mario Kart on this thing is mesmerizing! I'll definitely have to go through my old 3DS games on this thing!

Picked up the red one. Here's some incredibly shitty pictures I took with my phone :p

I've only been playing with it for maybe ten minutes so call these extremely early impressions:

Plusses
- The size is great. It feels like a controller, my hands just naturally clasp around it. No more pointy edges is awesome. It's also very light, maybe even lighter than the 3DS? That might be my mind playing tricks on me.
- The matte finish looks great and feels great.
- Blue was all sold out, but red looks pretty spiffy as well!
- The 'click in place' top screen is a lot more sturdy than the floppy hinges of my old 3DS. Also, the screens are both HUGE.

Minusses
- The top screen definitely has a yellow/orange hue even with the brightness turned all the way up. Bottom screen is fine, just like I remember it from my old 3DS. I hope I'll get used to the hue because right now it's definitely noticable, at least in menu's and stuff with lots of white (KH's main menu). It just looks like the bottom screen has the brightness turned up more. Maybe I won't mind it/notice it when I'm actually playing.

maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me..but did the slide pad change a little or something?

Apparently the slide pad isn't as flat on the edges. It's more like the Wii U prototype pad's pad....this is just observation from earlier points in the thread. Don't have an XL yet (NOA sucks), so I cannot confirm the difference.

It's also alot less slippery, which is fantastic.

Hard to say. It depends on what kind of game you want.

Super Mario 3D Land is pretty good, but it's way too easy.

Resident Evil: Revelations has a new great co-op mode, but I wouldn't really say that it's a must have for single player alone.

Mario Kart 7 is probably the best new game you can get for 3DS if you enjoy Mario Kart. Great online, and the game is really nice on the XL.

If Mario Kart isn't your thing, then Ocarina of Time is definitely the best one. It's awesome on the bigger screen too. I consider OoT to be the best game on 3DS, but it's a remake/port and not a brand new game.

If you are a Final Fantasy fan, then Theatrhythm is a must have. Perhaps not THE must have title, but it's a lot of fun and has plenty of content. Check out the demo on eShop.

I don't own Ghost Recon anymore, but I did spend over 30 hours on it. It's a good turn based strategy game, and it should be really cheap nowadays. Not the best game on the system, but it's a really solid game that you might want to consider if you like the genre.

Totally bizarre, but I feel like the only one that has not had this issue out of the box. The white appears white - even when using KH's main menu as a template.

Damnit..just noticed a stuck/dead pixel in the middel of the screen. Wasn't there when I bought it, but suddenly appeared. Can't unsee it :/
What's Nintendo's policy on this?

I have absolutely no impressions yet, but the important thing is I got it:

There's a lot of light in my living room right now so the picture isn't that great. Will do a lot of Mario 3D Land tonight to get a feel for the hardware. Now I just need to find a good place to preorder NSMB2, preferably one that actually delivers on launch day..
