Kotaku: Gamestop has sold out preorder deluxe Wii U stock nationwide

GameStop has Rayman Legends as dated for 12/4--not gospel, or anything, but it's not one of the standard Wii U placeholder dates, either. Seems likely to be accurate.

From the WiiU price and release thread, this is apparently the launch lineup for NA:

Assassin's Creed III
Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition

Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Darksiders II
Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Twodisney
ESPN Sports Connection
Game Party Champions
Just Dance 4
Madden NFL 13
Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth
Mass Effect 3: Special Edition
NBA 2K13
New Super Mario Bros. U
Nintendo Land

Rabbids Land
Rayman Legends
Scribblenauts Unlimited
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed
Transformers Prime
Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2013
ZombiU

For sure getting the bold, still debating on the underlined.

If this turns out to be the list, then the bold ones are probably the ones I'll snap up.

I hope/assume I'll get mine at or close to launch - when I was at my local Gamestop yesterday, the guy said I was #4 on that store's list.

Going by the fact that the UK launch will be the same as the USA one, only without Madden and ESPN, here is my list of day-one purchases:

Assassin's Creed III
Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Darksiders II
Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
Game Party Champions
Just Dance 4
Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth
Mass Effect 3: Special Edition
NBA 2K13
New Super Mario Bros. U
Nintendo Land
Rabbids Land
Rayman Legends
Scribblenauts Unlimited
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed
Transformers Prime
Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2013
ZombiU

Bolded are 100% must buys, and games underlined are my "maybe buy at christmas" ones.

Add Scribblenauts and NintendoLand (and maybe get rid of EM2) to the 'underline for Christmas' list and this is exactly the list of games I want :p

This is such crap. I'm convinced that they deliberately send shortages to retailers to fan the hype. There was none of this shit when the Playstation 2 and regular XBox was released. I remember being able to pick up the XBox in early December 2001. It seems like this trend began to seriously take hold with the current generation consoles.

I am kind of surprised given the economy, changes in the market, etc. I thought that it would be fairly easy to get ahold of a Wii U. I didn't think it would be a flop, just that it would be readily available.

I guess we'll see how quickly retailers are able to restock.

Either way I'm glad I didn't hesitate on pre-ordering one. This will be my first Nintendo console since the SNES.

It was next to impossible to find a PS2 for months after launch in the states.

No release date was given and there is nothing about the date on Nintendo's website. It won't be a launch title, but will still be out by the end of the year I bet
I'm pretty sure it was announced a launch title.

It is for Europe, anyway.

thats hypothetically assuming those people have the actual money to pay their preorders off.
I'm not sure if you're insinuating something about Wii U pre-orderers.

Huh? Selling PS2's for $500 on ebay was a meme back in the day. Even with Xbox 1 being a totally unproven new comer, there were all night lines 50+ people deep at small town Best Buys. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that there has been a lot of inventory manipulation across console launches, but it's not a new development. IIRC, N64 was tough as shit to get to get at launch and its first Christmas.

I'm going to guess it's because the Wii has become iconic akin to the iPad/iPhone.

It may not live up to everyone's expectations, but the social association of owning one is an appealing aspect for a lot.
For those people, I expect the idea of a Nintendo tablet akin to Apple's is an extremely enticing thought. (although we know that isn't exactly correct.)

This in turn will create the initial demand for it this holiday season.

I'll be getting my Wii-U in 2 years like I did with my Wii.

Hopefully I'll find a easier time getting it unlike my Wii where I had to wait a few weeks before new units had to be shipped....and this was 2 years after the Wii release lol.

And yet, the Wii is still the fastest selling console ever.

Simple explanation is more people are buying consoles than ever before which is supported by the sales figures for the current systems.

How much do you have to put down for a pre-order? 50$?

best buy retail: $5 (I believe)
best buy online: temporary charge for the full amount which is then returned in 3-5 days.
gamestop retail: $50 w/o rewards card $25 w/
gamestop online: you're not charged until shipped.

I'm just curious as how old you were back when the PS2 launched. Not for any real reason, but to try and work out why you've forgotten that the PS2 was so short in supply at launch that even the pre-orders had pre-orders themselves. It was INCREDIBLY hard to get hold of for months, and was a big thing especially over here in the UK (I remember watchdog reports on the TV about how hard it was to find one).

And of course the Xbox was easy to get at launch. It wasn't the successor to the best selling console OF ALL TIME. The PS2 was. So is the Wii U.

Probably, only question is whether they have the capacity to cover it what with trying to launch WW a few weeks apart. Obviously it's not uncommon for multiple consoles to move well over a million units in November at any random point in their cycle--never mind launch. It'd be interesting to see what a sufficiently supplied debut could do, cause I don't think any console has shipped more than 500k units its first month. Wii probably could have done 3-5+ million if the units were there. I would say there are between 500k and 1 million guaranteed sales for any major console, at any time of the year. A so called super core, the ones who bought 700k $600 PS3's in Nov/Dec 2006 (most of whom probably reside on Neogaf). The million dollar question is how many returning soccer moms and retirement homes there will be beyond those guys.

The crazy thing is not only all of that, but the fact that Black Friday is only 5 days after the launch.

I'm curious how much they'll be able to ramp up production now, because i'm seriously expecting Wii-like shortages for a while.

PS2 shortages at launch were so iconic that there was a whole run of scams where people sold PS2 BOXES on eBay for a thousand dollars and then laughed about it openly.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
This seems hard to believe considering it's so soon and that they basically haven't started marketing it in mainstream media at anywhere near full force afaik outside some appearances, unless they had very limited numbers of the Premium SKU...

Hahahaha, where the hell do you live when the PS2 was released. Shit was crazy when it went on sell. I thought it was a big disaster till the Wii was released.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I was not expecting this.
Hopefully, we won't suffer the same thing in the UK - I want the prices to lower a bit first.

If I were you, I'd pre-order sooner rather than later.

I'm only associated with two companies in the UK games retail space, but both are pre-selling a large amount. Give it a few weeks, and it'll be at the same level as the US in terms of percentage of total allocation. And the prices don't look set to reduce by much whatsoever. Amazon is usually the trend-setter, and they've priced themselves equivalent to everyone else, even increasing since their initial price. Tesco is at the same level, and ASDA/Sainsburys are too. And due to the possible low stock/repeat of the Wii situation, they're probably going to keep those prices locked.

Wish I lived in your reality where the PS2 was plentiful at launch. Shit took months to find for me. There were constant news repots of shortages and sell outs well after launch.

Means nothing to me.
Since the Deluxe bundle personally is pretty pointless if you don't want nintendo land or a black console.

Like I alluded to earlier, I don't think this has anything to do with that. The market Gamestop and the rest of these early preorders are satisfying is a super core. A guaranteed base at least 500k to 1 million strong that would buy any major console, any time of the year, at any price. In other words, this is almost definitely not soccer moms and retirement homes being counted here, it's gaffers. The people you're referring to will come out of the wood work (if they come out of the word work) surrounding the actual launch. Most of them don't even know what a preorder is.

If there's at least 6000 stores in the GameStop chain, and each store was allotted 20 units between both basic and deluxe, that's 120,000 units right there.

It's not like a million deluxe models just got pre-ordered. Seems pretty believable that there'd be 50-60k people aware of Wii U's launch window before mainstream advertising set in, that'd account for the deluxes going so soon.

So yeah, this isn't that unbelievable or "rigged". 120,000+ units for GameStop at launch, the rest split between the other launch day retailers.

Thanks for the advice - preordered.

I wouldn't hold my breath for Amazon. They haven't sold the 3DS in almost a year. They haven't sold the Wii in forever. They've never sold the 3DS XL.

Perhaps a Nintendo vs Amazon feud will keep the Wii U off of Amazon this year.

Amazon already notified people today they wont be carrying it anytime soon so yea, they won't have it during launch at least.

Why oh why did I have to throw down a $2000 down payment on a car when I could've laid at least $50 for a pre-order of deluxe Wii U.

Oh, that's right. Marriage and being poor.

*sigh*

Well, here's hoping we get news of more availability via retail stores or what have you. I don't care, I'll camp out all evening for that mess. I want some New Super Mario Bros. U!

Gonna call my Gamestop tomorrow and ask if they're still taking pre-orders...it's only been ONE DAY and they're already sold out? No way.

AniHawk

I remember the Wii launch too. Wii preorders were impossible to find within an hour of when they became available. People lined up at Gamestops the day preorders became available. You had no option but to camp out at the store the day before or hope that you found an opening online in time.

yeah that's why i'm not too concerned. two days and still some left? i might at least get a little lucky in finding it if i look in the right places.
