So we went from analyses of credibility to pointing out every typo one person makes? uh, real progress there guys
.
Arthur was hired before I was, but I'll defend his place on the team passionately. I can understand why some people disagree with him on some stuff, but Arthur is fucking incredible as an editor. Take a look at that crazy, marked-up word document in this week's episode of the podcast. That kind of thing is intimidating, but it also shows how much time and care he puts into editing a single review.

arthur is reviews editor.......

that said the specific typo is pretty bad. y is nowhere near x on the keyboard and it's in the headline which is really easy to catch on a basic proofread. they should show better attention to detail.

The reviews are not immune to errors. Even with the Jonas Salk of editing at the helm.

I just wonder if we're all being played and trolled into keeping this thread alive for so long. lol

(Polygon is the creepshots of games journalism?)

Also, is Arthur the new Jim Sterling? Maybe we're all falling into his trap!
Arthur is nowhere near as bad as Jim Sterling.

Arthur may be a dick, but at least he doesn't make a complete mockery of his chosen profession and at least attempts to take it seriously.

Good sweet jesus, I feel dirty after listening to that. Saw it while skimming the thread this morning and thought to myself "Gee, a group of fellows who think Gies is a hack like I do, I would love to hear what they have to say!" and happily loaded it onto my ipod. After listening to the two segments in which they talk about Gies, I almost want to defend the guy. Not because I feel they were too harsh, but because there's something so... slimy and creepy about two guys sitting there and bitching about a man they hate so passionately. It was like listening to two nerds talk about how the douchey jock that's never talked to them and likely doesn't know they exist is such an asshole and fuck him. Sure, that jock's still a douche, but... jesus you sad fucks, ignore him and go do something else.

I need to stop bitching about Gies on NeoGAF lest I become one of you.

It's unabashedly brutal I think just for the sake of being brutal.

it would have helped if either of them were charming, articulate, well-spoken, or interesting; you know, things you'd ideally want to be if you're going to host a podcast. instead it's like the audio-version of a cheese sandwich.

Do these guys even know him? from what I can tell, it's a PS Vita fansite more than anything.

I thought the part about Gies wanting to have sexual relations with a 360 console was pretty spot on.

I just started listening though, so we'll see how it goes!

Edit: The Giant Bomb / NeoGAF talk is pretty accurate and funny too. This isn't half bad. Might have to add this to my rotation.

We might be at polar opposites here but that's exactly why I love that site so much. To me videogames are aren't suppose to be taken seriously. It's such a waste of time and money but I love it and I love their approah on covering it, because it's often as if not just as dumb as the thing I enjoy.
I'm not looking for seriousness in a games site or podcast. Just some thoughtfulness and intelligence. I don't get that from the guys at GB.

If I wanted to hear "just some dudes" talking about games, I'd just talk to my friends. I expect professionals to digest and process some of this stuff before regurgitating it onto their readers and listeners. I get that their "rawness" is what appeals to people, but for me it just strikes me as amateurish and indulgent. It's like listening to mediocre musicians sit around and "jam" for two straight hours. Anyone who can play an instrument can do that.

I prefer talent and thoughtfulness. Humor is just fine. I don't crave seriousness. They are games, after all.

I don't agree with some of Arthur opinions while Listening to REBEL FM, But one thing Arthur always does is explain his opinions. You can press him on something and he will give you details on how he reach them. Cant say the same from most game writers.

But I was told their work would be new, different, and revolutionary. I'm certainly not seeing that there.
I don't think it's the work that was ever meant to be revolutionary, it's the website layout and design. That's the feeling I got from watching the "documentary".

At the end of the day it's still just another video game journalism site. It's not like they invented a new language to communicate in, they still just have their writing skills, industry veteran status, and the English language to go off.

So it's Kotaku with a hype video.

Won't it just be the verge?
No, if you watch the documentary it's clear that the actual Polygon website will be completely different. Or at least that's the image that they're trying to portray in the video, we'll just have to wait for the full launch.

The Verge is just a holdover for the journalists to get some work done before the official launch of Polygon, as far as I can tell. This is merely my impression from watching every episode of the Press Start videos.

TheVerge is gonna look EXTREMELY dated when they push the Polygon site live... Will at least give it a chance, even tho all of Voxmedia and their ego's are so hard to cope with.

The actual Editor-In-Chief of The Verge seems very odd. I don't know anything about him and I don't dislike him from what I've watched of that Jay Leno/David Letterman rip-off talk show they have going. He just seems weird, I'd like to know his background.

Wiki'd him: Apparently before The Verge he was the Editor of Engadget, and a DJ dating back to the late 90s. Not bad, still has a weird, off-putting personality, though.

Huh. I just watched all eight episodes back to back and I'm a bit surprised. I've been put off from Polygon from the very start - too much hype, too much egotistical bloviating from writers that I never much cared for in the first place (Crecente's at the top of that list) - so I was expecting to hate the documentary too. After watching it, my overwhelming take away from the whole thing isn't "circle-jerk" disgust, just...boredom. I found the whole thing to be incredibly dull. If building a new website is actually an interesting affair, this documentary has done a piss poor job of highlighting content and behind the scenes info that would be insightful.

In the end, the videos themselves haven't changed my mind about Polygon or aroused any anticipation for their impending launch, though the defensive reactions from their writers on Twitter (and the 3/4 of a million that they took from Microsoft to do this) has certainly cemented my initial negative opinion of the site.

Exactly this, I took much the same away from it.

Most recent episode seems to be the most straightforward, always nice to see some features discussion on a website about games. Russ Pitts always struck me as kind of a weird guy, especially reading some of his stuff on the Escapist but anyway it doesn't seem like anyone said anything controversial this episode, which is a nice change of pace. Chris Plante and Chris Grant seem cool

He's a little odd, but I really enjoy his work on the website and The Vergecast.

May Payne 3, huh? How is this even possible? McElroy said it himself in the teaser for the trailer for the documentary about the website. They're the "absolute best people in the world" doing this!

She would make such errors when she did writing for Dual Shockers, as well.

Yeah I just started listening to it and he's a good mixture of a decent knowledge of the tech industry and humor. And he doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.

True. I think Van Gogh got his start paraphrasing press releases.

Missing the point, eh?

Games are art. So... since art should be taken seriously, so should games. I was referring to a remark that said we shouldn't take games seriously, and I disagreed.

Just because it can be taken seriously doesn't mean you need to take it seriously 24/7

I mean, art's pretty serious... but fanart is also art, and do you take all instances of that seriously?

spectrum of seriousity, I suppose

Oh, I agree. I just see no reason why people would criticize a site simply because it took video games seriously.

When I was a musician, I took music seriously, but there was quite a bit of levity in there as well. Polygon's doing the same thing.

I also have to wonder how much of their editorial energy is going into launching the new site rather than keeping up with the current Verge-based one. Especially this close to launch. Again, not an excuse, but just an explanation.

Perhaps they do, in fact, have some genuinely new (content-oriented) ideas in store for launch?

Some quotes from that podcast, linked earlier in the thread:

"I'm openly cheering for Polygon to fail"

"I actively hate Arthur Gies"

"The guy is a complete maniac"

What the fuck is wrong with people? Openly cheering for something to fail? These guys have families, this is their job. Jesus.

Then again, they also reduce Giant Bomb to "Fat guys playing Games".

i'm typically against this kind of mean-spirited reduction-ism, but it's not like they're way off-base. overweight men sweating while playing videogames (or you know, sitting idly in a chair) does feature somewhat prominently in their content.

But what does their size have to do with their knowledge of the medium?

To be honest, given the way the internet is, I have to applaud their courage for going online being of a larger size, and getting on camera. They've got some stones.

Not sure I'd even agree, I mean, the quick looks are them in audio form (unless it's Kinect, in which case they're showing you how the game works/reacts).

Between Gies' heroic hours editing game reviews and Ryan Davis' courageous on camera appearance, it's a wonder no games journalist has received a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
