Wii U's Miiverse - A Guide for Dummies

Hopefully they give us an option to toggle miiverse hints on or off.

I'd like to see a system where users can rate the degree to which a comment can be considered a spoiler. Maybe something on a 1-3 scale that ranges from "not a hint" to "helpful hint" to "complete spoiler." That way you could filter out what you don't care to see but still be left with other people's opinions of a situation if you want. Maybe we could even rate this ourselves as we post it and other people can vote on whether they agree with our rating or not.

Well i believe, you can switch to show only your messages, the messages of the users of your system, the messages of your friends and everybody else in the world. I wouldn't be surprise if you could chose between your country, continent and the the world. And of course filter spoilers. So there are ways to protect yourself from too much hints.

Pocket-Lint have an interesting look at FIFA 13 with New screenshots.

Any one know if FIFA/Madden will incorporate miiverse at all? If not, what would you like to see?

Also, grass textures and crowd resolution are better
:O
than other versions. Was gonna make a thread, but......

As said before: NO non-Nintendo game has Miiverse support (aside from the wishy washy Scribblenauts statement and some eShop games).

This is the kind of online implementation that i've always wanted. Something to show you how other people are using their consoles, prompting you to check out games you mightn't have and sharing details about it, right from startup. Sure, xbox kind of did it, but not with the depth of this. Very interested.

Thanks for this thread.

I like that WiiU boot in Miiverse, that console will feel alive.

Maybe it is.

No Wii U thread? Why?? This is nonsense. So 1000 threads for Wii U are suddenly ok? Because where else to post rumors/speulations? make a new thread about everything?

I don´t get how anyone can think about this as a "good idea"...

If your talking about a general Wii U thread..

Your gonna have a bad time..

We've already been down this road. It doesn't end well.

Wait, didnt the Miiverse intro video (pre e3) feature ZombiU?

*sigh* ... yes, it did.

For the thousandth time (excuse the tone but it gets frustrating to repeat this over and over), every game can access the basic Miiverse (message/activity feed, the stuff from that video). BUT games can also integrate Miiverse more deeply into the game itself (see NSMBU) but that has to be programmed into each game and the feature has to be specifically designed for that game.

Aren't the in-game graffiti messages in ZombiU done through Miiverse?

I jest, I get your point. Although I did think there was some kind of in game notification In ZombiU aswell (saw some screenshots at some point) and I didn't think that was a standard/basic miiverse function. Thought that was specific to ZU as it was telling you where your friends had been infected and where to go to grab their loot.

I'm honestly wondering how Assassin's Creed III or Black Ops II would try to use MiiVerse. In fact, it's kind of interesting thinking about how COD Elite could be used with the GamePad. That might be the reason they've delayed it on the Wii U.

Edit: It'd also be kinda nice if Virtual Console games could eventually have MiiVerse functionality, even if it was just in a limited capacity, or only VC games released after MiiVerse launch.

Oddly enough Miiverse is a bit like what I had expected Nintendo to use miis for back on the Wii at the start. Kind of like the Mii plaza but threaded through everything including games.

I'm wondering if there actually is going to be any capability to prevent people from posting spoilers in a game they're playing by preventing players from seeing messages within that game hub, sent by players who are further along in the game's save file than they are.

Regardless, it is very good that we've seen multiple remarks related to multiple games about Miiverse having the capacity to function as a full global leaderboard and stat tracking / comparison system.

It would also be great if you could check for Miiverse messages and Miiverse leaderboard entries in a game you have played, without requiring that game be loaded and booted at the moment. Like if there's a central menu where you can look for messages / posts on every game you've ever played. This would solve what I long felt was a major limitation of the otherwise great leaderboard system on Xbox Live: the need to boot into games one at a time and check the leaderboards. It would have been good to boot the system, and look at the boards for every game you own in one place (including disc based games) THEN decide if you wanted to load a particular game to attack the leaderboards in it.

I'm led to believe that you can do this on the Wii U. I'm assuming that right from the menu you can boot into the board of any game you've played.

Also, Xbox Live actually does allow you to look at leaderboards without booting into a game. I've forgotten how to reach it, but I have done it at least once.

I presume that select image means selecting a screenshotted picture.

Maybe screenshots are an OS-level feature?

Nope. It will mean you can select a screen shot that you've taken with your real camera, copied to SD and copied onto the Wii U.....How Nintendo thought that was a good idea is beyond me.

So far they've said its between WiiU owners.

Technically no reason why 3rd party software can't work and I'd be shock if we don't get something down the line.....but, Nintendo ;)

Yeah, just seems like a no brainer right? Allow anyone on a PC or Mac or iPhone to use it. Gets it into the minds of more than just gamers.

Hopefully they give us an option to toggle miiverse hints on or off.
Well there is the spoiler tag so I think people should mark hints as such too.

You are assuming that everyone has access to the web and wants to go to Gamefaqs or Gaf.
Exactly. Most people who will own a Wii U likely won't be into NeoGAF or other online gaming forums.

To those saying that this seems useless and 'why wouldn't people just load the console's web browser and go to a faq or a board?' do you not see how it will be nice to have, immediately on boot, a welcome screen that is 100% game focused, with recommendations, discussion, stats, leaderboards etc? Something that you can filter down to include specific users if you so chose. No ads, and no sales pitches (k maybe after digging into the icon of game you dont have you'll find a one click to purchase icon, but that's not a bad thing).

Furthermore it will most likely differentiate between which Mii's currently in view are online at the moment, and allow you to jump straight into video chat or gaming with them.

No value in that? Really? I'm just strictly talking GAF users here.
Forget potential expanded audience, that get's even more obvious. Many of those people might not want to go on about their gaming on the existing social networks, and would certainly love to have an insulated and enclosed, gaming-dedicated social network.

None of that uses Miiverse. Ubisoft said as much. They probably developed their own tech for that before Miiverse was a thing. Nintendo probably didn't have it ready early enough so only later games will use it.

That means you could have one person playing the game and someone else playing the manager – watching, looking to see what's not working tactically and making changes on the fly. It's ideal for those armchair football managers and designed to accommodate different roles on multiplayer games.
This is brilliant!

In your opinion if Nintendo does decide to do a ND on miiverse, how long do you guys/girls think is the ideal amount of time to showcase all of the features?

I wouldn't mind a full hour of just OS talk.

It should take as long as it should to explore all the features of the Wii U. We are less than a month from launch (wow time sure flies) and the fact that we are still in the dark is just absurd.

Around this time tomorrow in UK people would have seen the first 60 second Wii U ad on TV during XFactor. I wonder if Miiverse will be something that those TV ads focus on instead of games.

Long enough to get our hopes up and hyped for launch but not long enough to get into the little details that end up making it disappointing. We'll get to find those out for ourselves post launch.

It baffles me that we are getting commercials for a product we do not even fully understand yet.

I suspect it will be another generic Nintendo advert of late. Still i'll trade you the first Wii U advert for a November 18th release. Waiting those extra 12 days is going to be a nightmare

I don't remember exactly if we knew ALL the ins and outs of the Wii/PS3/X360 OS when those launched. Partly, it's been awhile since a system launched in the U.S. first. I wouldn't say it's "absurd" we don't know those details yet. Nintendo has only just started putting demo units in stores; no commercials have begun yet.

Really so far the worst thing about this, other than front-and-center implementation of the grotesque Mii's, is how disorganized the 'floating icons' look in the Miiverse. Maybe they think that's quaint for five year olds, but I hope there is some non-horrendous looking way to organize your programs and whatnot. Otherwise their attempt to be user friendly is going to be crippled in a malaise of excessive, obnoxious cuteness instead of simple, accessible layouts.

? that's just the plaza that shows you what's going on.

the actual menu is on the controller.

so they put a super ugly floating crap screen on the tv and then have a sub-HD resolution decent looking menu that appears on the controller? Always some awkward round about way of doing things that would simply make more sense. Why have two different types of screens for simple accessibility? That's a bit confusing, for one, and for another, what if you just have a regular controller without the screen? Then you have to navigate the ugly tv screen one?

None of these will (actively!) use Miiverse. The basic functionality is supported but the games themselves don't make use of it in any more involved way. So far, none of the launch games support it (Scribblenauts Unlimited was initially announced as doing so but was later moved to the "can't talk about that" bench). Only some of the eShop games are supposed to use it actively.

What do you mean not use it? I would imagine that every Wii U game would at least have a MiiVerse board devoted to it.

You can switch the menu and Miiverse from the GamePad to the tv and vice versa.

Can you make it so both screens have the non-ugly layout? I read through the topic but don't see any info on this stuff, so that's why I'm asking. Is it in that Nintendo Direct video in the OP?

Edit: Oops, there's the line in the OP. Missed it. Is there a picture of the normal, non-ugly controller screen layout?

Anyone got that screen shot? Even the icon in the corner looked miiversey.

If it's not, then this is getting confusing. Surely some games WILL use miiverse in this way (on screen messages relating to live in game events) which will get a bit confusing.

You know that that "sub-HD" screen is comparatively tiny and you won't die from too many jaggies, right?

Again, may I ask why you are so reluctant to read? Moments ago, I directed you to a post that contains the exact answer to this question.

Actually this might be sort of a good question: theoretically you'll be able to suspend a game and go into a web browser on the GamePad.

Not theoretically, factually. Yet again, see the other post.

You have to remember that Miiverse is not the OS. It's a social network. You should be able to avoid it entirely.

No, it's the first thing you see. What you think of when you say OS is also not the OS. The Xbox Dashboard is not the OS, the XMB is not the PS3's OS.
