The Last of Us trailer + preorder goodies + boxart + multiplayer confirmed

If it's co-op that makes sense and is fine, if it's deathmatch bullshit then it's more me-too multiplayer in a game that doesn't need it and nobody will play for longer than a week.

Why do publishers/devs insist on wasting time and money on that shit. Not only is it stupid because casuals stick with COD or their preferred game but if this game's story is an actual story and focused on the characters humanity it's completely contradictory to then have some separate thing where people kill each other in some 'fun' closed section like it's a murderous theme park.

Imagine if after the credits rolled on Raging Bull a comedy sketch started playing featuring all the characters from the movie doing zany stunts for no reason other than to appease comedy fans. It would be just as ridiculous as if multiplayer was added to a game like Alan Wake or Heavy Rain. If Last of Us is one of those character heavy games what's the point of deathmatch multiplayer other than to be a comedic version of Raging Bull.

we don't know that it is a big part of the game. and honestly we can already tell that the zombie types are gonna be purely melee attackers, who rush at you fast when you get spotted, and they don't take cover or any smart stuff like that.

We've talked about this in past threads but the ratio of human to zombie enemies are my biggest worry with this game. This game's main selling point to me is the enemy AI and how reactive and adaptive it seems to be to you. But when you throw mindless rage zombies in that kind of gets thrown away. I'm sure stealth is still a viable option but once you get spotted they don't flank or act like humans they'll just charge, and that's boring.

Just so I'm not mistaken...

The Uncharted 2 leads are making The Last of Us and Uncharted 3 was made by a different lead, correct?

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
reading there are boosters in MP is kind of a bummer... maybe they'll come up with something good, but that basically killed all/any hype I had for mp.

Eh, U2 had its fair share of problems in its beta phase. It was awesome and continuously improving for five months after release. Unfortunately, after all that time, they decided to completely change the way the game was played in February, which made no sense.
They had a hit by the end of the U2 beta. It was near perfect. Then by the time it came out they went and played with the jumping and movement speed. It wasn't too bad, but it was just the beginning of the changes they made. Then UC3 was even worse. The game was soooo good by the end of the beta, I was playing it every day. I ended up putting less than two days into the final thing.

They will probably do the same thing here, the beta will be some awesome unique take on multiplayer that feels unique.... Between the end of the beta and the finished game they will reduce into a COD clone

No idea if it's needed or not, but we have the trailer straight from Sony, no reencoding:

Quality seemed pretty good from what I saw :)

i think the zombie encounters could be quite scary actually, especially if there are multiple of them. they will no doubt take more bullets to take down, so the player would want to avoid them in the first place since ammo is scarce. plus they seem to come at you fast, and if you don't have the resources to fight back, you may be forced to run. so they may end up being more of a threat than 'smart' AI humans.

Buffed pre-rendered in-engine cutscenes + linear enclosed spaces + having to develop and optimize for one platform only + a lot of talented people.

It's my guess.

Could be but 99% of linear games on consoles dont look even half as good as what these guys put out so obviously talent is probably a major factor. These guys know their programming.

I saw the trailer again, this time paying more attention to the dialog. doesn't it feel like Ellie is somehow very important someway, I hope the story isn't setting up Ellie as some kind of special kid or something. the dialogs really give the vibe that maybe Ellie is like this last hope for humanity or something. maybe I'm just reaching though.

I'll rebuy a PS3 come May if this game lives up to the hype. Hope they do a limited PS3 bundle in the U.S for it. I'd be up for that. :D

Very important for Joel. Doesn't mean she is necessarily important for humanity

I like it, but I'll be printing this as my box art. Because it is PURE SEX.

Why does Joel have the most wrinkled shirt in the history of the universe? Ellie's too. Their shirts look like the skin of a 150 year-old.

Haha, and what's with the skull right in the middle of the art? This looks like some fanart of a 90s death metal band.

Neat. Thanks. I like the standard cover, however it'd be a good opportunity for Naughty Dog to update their logo. Jesus, that's a ghastly piece of 90s graphic design.

I think the game looks spectacular, I just hope the narrative holds up. The bar for mass media post-apocalyptic storytelling has been raised the last several years. They're not going to be able to get by on Uncharted-esque solid dialog and typical Hollywood plot.

It's thematically consistent. Look how overgrown everything is.

Don't like it? Don't play it, simple as that. As far as no one playing it for more than a week you couldn't be more wrong. If that had been the case with uncharted 2 or 3 do you think naughty dog would be spending time on it? The multiplayer in both uncharted games has brought in revenue for them, and it's fun for people who are interested in that sort of thing.

But in your opinion it's better to leave out options that others might like because you don't like them? No?

Based on this scenario you could do a lot of interesting stuff within a multiplayer framework.

For example, imagine a situation where there's basically a finite amount of weapons/ammo in the area which was globally tracked so every player could see how much is remaining. Ultimately meaning that as resources deplete combat devolves into more and more primal, melee-based fighting.

As these stocks dwindle increasing numbers of infected would be introduced into the zone in order to prevent the game from running indefinitely.

It'd be cool if players could team-up/betray each other on the Fly in order to counter this, with the impetus to band together increasing as the situation gets increasingly stacked against them.

Obviously the metrics for success could be set on a per game-mode basis, such as victory being gained on a last-man/team standing, clearing an area of enemies, escaping an area defended by an another team, or simply lasting beyond a set time threshold.

I'm just spit-balling here, but the scenario of TLOU really lends itself to more than just a basic MP game, especially given the foraging/resource acquisition aspect that they've talked about and the untrustworthy nature of humans in conjunction with berserker monsters as foes.

The disparity between the cutscene shots and the gameplay stuff is pretty obvious. I just hope they use a better form of AA than UC3's this time.

Light location type spoiler:
snowy mountian area?
Soooooooooooooooooo good. I hope they make the most of that environment.

Because it robs resources and time that can be spent on what matters more. People buy these games for the SP experience if they wanted multiplayer they'd go to games that care more about multiplayer.

Just make it a coop horde mode where you can spend $$ to upgrade weapons during the waves as you progress from one end of the map to the next.

I kinda don't want Multiplayer, but hey whatever sells copies I guess.

Downloaded the direct feed trailer from Gamersyde and it just looks phenomenal.

Does this game even need zombies?

zombies are simply plot device used as the constant threat in the world. the world is not dying like in other post apocalyptic story such as Fallout or The Road. you can see vegetation and animals running wild. so if there are no danger of zombies, people can simply gather up, make settlements and farm or hunt for food etc, which is probably already happened in some part of the game. but the addition of zombies added constant danger that everything can go terribly wrong at any time.

multi have their own team, and even use assets from single player team, it didn't cost anywhere near the single player campaign cost.

also, people don't know what they want until they try. people are saying the same thing about uncharted 2 multiplayer and in the end, some people actually like that mp so it have value.

U2 excelled in both. dunno about U3 mp but having it certainly didn't detract from the SP. and people do care because people still play mp of both.

This shit again...

The resources working on MP wouldn’t have been used on the SP game. The folks working on the SP campaign

But you would pay full price for a single player only version of The Last of Us? It would be full price with or without multiplayer and the SP campaign will be the same. Maybe pretend MP just doesn’t exist if you’re not interested? Or maybe give it a try, see what you think when you know more about it?

Uncharted 3's multiplayer was more polished, but I preferred the more simplistic UC2 multiplayer.

Having said that, I usually only playing single-player modes yet I've spent way more time playing Uncharted multiplayer than the campaign.

Damage control, money is still spent on pointless multiplayer that nobody will play for longer than 1-2 weeks because single player games are bought by people interested in single player games. If it wasn't being spent on that it could be spent on another Sony project (if it isn't given to Naughty Dog single player crew like he says). People who casually play arcade based multiplayer-only (like COD) are not interested in last of us 5 v 5 3rd person cover based deathmatch.

When I see me-too multiplayer I think about what that time and money could have been spent on instead, whether a naughty dog project or not. I don't think about the people who bought Uncharted 3 for it's multi-player because they don't exist.

That myth will never die will it.

It still does affect things though. What if the game's done and ready for release but the MP still needs quite a bit of work? Game gets delayed. If the SP guys aren't working on MP at all then who's footing the bill for a whole new sub-team for MP? That raises the budget and makes it need more sales to break even. Which you could make the argument that that's not our problem but if it under-performs with the higher budget who's funding the sequel?
