The new iPad |OT|

are you folding the smart cover with the microfiber on the outside? that's far sturdier, but the opposite of how you intuitively want to fold it

I know I'm late on this, but I find it funny that on the onscreen keyboard, there is a little line on the f and j keys, like the little raised bumps on a real keyboard. So pointless.

I'm so happy...I've been refreshing the Apple refurb page for a week now trying to score a 3rd Gen iPad for $379 and finally got one this morning. And it's not even for me, it's for my mother in law.

Halp.

My Ipad 3 is stuck in a "no backup in the cloud without some bull shit activated" dialog, giving me "cancel" or "menu/options/whatever the menu is called in English" options.

No matter how many times I hit one of the options, the dialogue menu stays. I can`t even turn it off, because the slider isn't working with this menu "on top" of the virtual screen.

I didn't even OPEN that menu, the cloud can go touch itself, I don't care.

Home + sleep until it forces shutdown.

Oooooh, nice.

I tried to hold each button down individually, not together. Yeah, besides an ipod shuffle I have no Apple products. Well, two shuffles, buying another one was about the same price as getting a replacement charger after the metal rod was bent.

Well there's also a way force quit an app, which is achieved by doing it kinda like you described.

Press sleep until the shutdown slider comes up, then press home until the app exits.

As a newcomer, it's normal that you don't know these because they are so unintuitive... but very handy when the time comes.

I've had plenty of iPad cases but I find that the simple Apple Smart Case is pretty good in terms of offering complete protection in a thin case while also including the foldable cover.

Another vote for this. I got the gray one, i think it makes the device actually look better than it does naked.

Really really happy with the 4th gen iPad. I think the mini people are crazy :)

My ipad keeps forgetting the router settings if it goes to sleep for a bit. Needing to input password each time,

Also when connected there is no option to forget network. Any fixes?

edit: got it working. Selecting other under wifi and typed in the SSID and the rest. Seems to have saved the settings.

For some reason my dad wants to buy an iPad, does the new one use the same screen protectors as 3rd Gen? Don't see too many 4th Gen ones on eBay.

EDIT: Also will smart covers from 3rd Gen work or no? I don't know much about iPads!

All cases/screen protectors designed for the 3rd Gen will work with the 4th Gen. Literally the only physical change to the outside is the Lightning connector instead of the old 30-pin connector.

Walmart has dropped prices on both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, with the 16 GB iPhone 5 now on sale for just $127 and the iPhone 4S coming in at $47.

In addition, Walmart is now selling the latest fourth-generation 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad for just $399, a $100 discount from standard pricing. And beginning on Monday, Walmart will also include a $30 iTunes gift card bonus with iPad purchases.

Despite the iPhone 5 having launched in the United States less than three months ago, retailers are offering aggressive discounts on the devices to attract holiday shoppers. RadioShack is currently offering all iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S models at $50 discounts from their regular prices, and also offering email coupons for $10 credit on future purchases for every $50 spent during the holiday shopping season. RadioShack also offers price matching through its Mobile Low Price Guarantee, suggesting that it is likely to match Walmart's discounted pricing upon request.

I'm thinking about getting my wife an iPad for Christmas but I'm a little lost on the details since I haven't really been keeping up with them. Right now I'm leaning towards the 32GB 4th gen model. Any thoughts or advice? Also, where is the best place to buy one? What about insurance?

I owned a 32gb 3rd gen, and replaced it with a 32gb 4th gen when they were released.

  • Definitely get a 4th gen. In my experience the battery life is better, and apparently the faster processor will handle late gen software whereas its predecessor won't
  • Don't get a 16gb because you will fill it immediately. I didn't realize how many photos I would end up storing (the screen is beautiful) so I'm a few gb away from my limit.
  • Don't get a Mini. The screen pales in comparison despite the fact that it's super comfortable to hold

In short, you're headed in the right direction. They're pretty much the same price everywhere, so if you see local shops selling them for $20 off just take the deal. Not sure how stock is meeting holiday demand though so you may want to move quickly.

Thanks for the help, it's very much appreciated. Is it worth buying it from somewhere like Best Buy for the protection plan or should I go for some third party insurance? That's the one thing I'm still fairly unsure on.

I've never bought insurance on an iPod/iPhone/iPad (I've owned....16 iPods/iPhones/iPads in total) and have never regretted it. The Apple store really is quite good at helping you out if something happens to it.

I know some people don't care for the official Apple Smart Case, but I love it. The fact is your wife will probably treat the thing pretty gingerly so I wouldn't worry about insurance.

Protection plans are pretty much a scam. Apple products tend to be very sturdy, especially iPads and iPhones.

Smart Case or other cases. The Smart Cover is half-assed now.

I'm reading several reviews claining that the case is half assed and just a bad product (but every single case has plenty of similar reviews). Finding and researching new cases is what i hate most about buying new products

Why the hell is the app store a piece of shit. Got my mom an iPad 2 and are trying to find free games. I can't seem to find an "all game" sort or "free games" sort. Just new and noteworthy and featured. And a bunch of extremely vague genre links at the bottom. Help please.

On the App Store on your ipad go to top charts then there is a categories link in the top left hand corner. Chose games > all games and then you will see the top paid games and top free games.

My GF surprised me with one for christmas and I need some protection. Smart case or just the cover?

It's all about how you plan on using your iPad, and how anal you are about keeping it perfect.

I've had a Smart Cover for two years now and my iPad has never been damaged or even scratched, but I rarely take it anywhere it could be damaged, and when I do take it out of the house I have it in a cheap sleeve I have for it.

Augh.

I had told my mother on multiple occasions that I did not want a tablet. I mean, I do want one; it's just not something I want someone else to purchase for me and pick the make and model and so on and so forth.

And then, of course, she gets me an ASUS TF300T for Christmas. I was actually pleasantly surprised, except when I asked on GAF I was informed that Android tablets have app issues. Bleh.

So now I'm torn between seeing if I can return it for an iPad Mini or a refurbished iPad 3. I'm torn because on the one hand, I do want to take it with me and carry it around and the mini seems more conducive for that, but on the other hand I would like the larger screen for ... almost everything else.

(I'm not sure if this is the right topic for this, but I'd rather not make an OT topic that I would have to moderate. If there is a better topic for this question, direct me there. :x)

I myself prefer a larger screen, but to be honest the difference in screen size between the mini and regular iPads is really miniscule. The real reason to get a refurb iPad 3 over the mini is for the retina screen. If that isn't important to you then I'd go for the mini.

as someone with both an ipad 3 and an ipad mini, i don't think you want the larger screen as much as you think you do. it's almost never an issue except for things like the korg synth which have lots of tiny dials all over the screen. another thing i keep the ipad 3 around for is PDFs/zinio magazines, which are much easier to read without zooming in, though that's a function of the resolution rather than the screen size. in any case, i now use the mini 10 times as much as i do the 3.

whichever way you go i would recommend trading in that asus transformer, though. it's pretty good as android tablets go, but the support for full-size tablet apps is still incredibly limited. i love my nexus 7 but i really don't know what i'd do with a 10-inch android tablet. the ipad, on the other hand, is a pretty transformative thing to have around.

Haha. If I had both, I wouldn't have a dilemma. ;)

Yeah, I think in terms of practicality the Mini does seem to have the edge... but those hagiographic reviews (the Verge review in the OP, for instance) has me pining for an iPad 3 nonetheless. I would like to use it to play games and watch things, as well. And I already do read PDFs fairly regularly (when I encounter them online); I wouldn't expect that to change.

well we gave the ipad mini a pretty glowing review too! i like it way more than i expected to.

i'd also say that the mini is the better gaming device in most respects. equal if not better performance (because it's not pushing so many pixels), far more comfortable in the hand (because it's so much lighter), negligible difference in graphics (retina isn't so noticeable with fast-moving stuff).

really i'd say go mini unless you have a very specific and important reason not to, like needing to carry around scans of textbooks for school or something.
