The New iPad and The New Xbox aren't similar in concept. If you don't buy the right "new" iPad, you still have access to all the apps that Apple is making money off of. Microsoft needs people to buy the right Xbox. As Nintendo has now proven twice, naming matters.

I don't see how anybody could get it wrong. If somebody is clueless and goes into a store and says "I'd like an Xbox" and they say "Which one, the Xbox 360 or the new Xbox" they're going to instantly know which is which. In what way does "Xbox 360" and, say, "Xbox Infinite" stop people buying the wrong console and clear up which is the newer model?

All this PM here, PM there, i will post something, i will leak something, i have the specs but i can't share, i have some NDA to follow, most of this is bullshit.

I would bet that most of those people are working for Microsoft and just gauging the general interest in knowing the system specs. He have tidbits of what we believe to be info, and then it's a good round of BS.

People like SuperDAE, he's either doing this for MS or he is just a dumb ass playing with people on the internet. You don't threaten to release info you have, either you have it and post it, or you just don't know anything. Looks to me like he is doing this for MS, to see what the hardcore gamers say about the prospect of knowing more about the next gen system.

Journalists will not share any info because of two things: a) they already know; and b) they don't to risk losing any sources.

So in the end some people say they know stuff but the posts are vague and obtuse sometimes.

That been said, i thank the few GAF users who are giving us some bits, but the majority of "insiders" in the internet are just full of shit.

There are only 3-5 people on Gaf I trust that know what they are talking bout. I assume the rest are either fans with small tibits or Doing MAJOR PR for MS and Sony

Still very confused on these "custom blocks" that can help the GPU. I definitely understand about sound processing and video acceleration/resizing etc. But AFAIK, GPU's already have the stuff that's really important to do fast like ROPS as fixed function and shaders as more GP. What else is involved in rendering that can be made fixed function and help out greatly for the GPU? I feel like more optimized GPU code would win at the end...

If any hardware company found a way to go with a lesser GPU but use a customized block that JUST augmented a particular aspect of their hardware that might also fit in with their other hardware to make it an all together better package they would do that. A bigger GPU, as everyone knows, solves one thing and brings its own problems. Even custom blocks bring their own problems. But that is for the company to guage.

Sony tried this with the PS3. And though many of us have issues with how that worked out. I still think its a pretty insane machine.

Someone else brought this up in another thread and I never picked up on the 360 being dropped down to just Xbox. I guess that's just that.

I don't know how to gauge if that would work. I just think that 720 is a fucking stupid name though Then again I still think Xbox as a name is atrocious. But I am used to it now.

Ditto. Some of you people are hilarious. 4X MSAA @ 1080p? MSAA is the most brute force, expensive feature available today.

That's not even remotely true. MSAA is remarkably efficient in terms of quality/speed tradeoff in forward renderers, and still far from "most brute force" in deferred renderers. A brute-force method would be SSAA -- which still has its advantages.

The raw teraflop numbers for either console aren't going to tell you much about what they're actually capable of.

They're going to tell you how many floating point operations the hardware can perform, at peak. If you know what that means you know what that means, if you don't you don't. But it's still one of the more useful numbers that gets thrown around when comparing performance.

If you've got enough power to render a 4k game at some arbitrary level of prettiness, you can always make it look even prettier if you drop the resolution.

Always. Every time. It is never not the case. Resolution, framerate, and overall graphical "prettiness" all pull from the same pool. If one is increased, at least one of the others must decrease, assuming the hardware and level of developer brilliance remains constant.

I thought I read something authoritative that said that the reason that the Kinect is as low-res at it is, is not because the sensor or processing is limited, but is because trying to shove a larger image down the link to the 360 would have been too slow. So, it sounds like both the throughput and the resolution were held back.

True. Fragmenting install base based on core performance antithetic to the core reason for the existence of a console.

Of course, if MS is planning this, I'd assume one would be the XBLA box and the other the XBox. Also, this XBLA box or rather the chipset may be a part of the various set top boxes. It'll act as a hook to get people to buy the Xbox for the full experience.

It probably won't be. The X1950 is considered by some to be rather similar to the 360 GPU and it's perfectly capable of powering modern titles like Crysis 2.

That card was released a whole year later. And also, the cpu he has was released in 2008.

And let me add the fact that apparently, if you read the comments, the other owners of that card are perplexed at how he reaches that kind of performance.
