Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

Dreamcast was so far ahead of its time, its taken more than 10 years for all consoles to catch up with its VMU concept.

RIP Dreamcast ;_;

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Vita lacks a pair of shoulder buttons/triggers.

It has shitty analogs and no L3/R3.

I enjoy my Vita for what it is... but it isn't a console controller. They better not lose the plot.

While Sony won't get any points for originality in regards to the LCD-controller combo, this is something any serious console owner should totally be for. In the past, I've bashed Sony for always copying Nintendo, but come on now, this is the next logical step. Plus, it'd be interesting to see Sony's implementation and what features they are more focused on exploiting.

The usefulness/convenience of a touch screen gamepad cannot be understated. With the amount of menu navigation games and other apps force the user to do these day, it's a blessing. Think of how media-heavy these next systems will be, with all the constant need for setting up accounts, text input, searches, and messages - this stuff is painfully tedious on traditional controllers. Just typing a simple youtube search on Xbox 360's controller could run you well over 1 min, expecially if numbers or special characters are involved. The fact that quite a few people are against this is almost sickening. People are acting as though the traditions of the today's controller won't remain intact - like it's only an LCD screen and nothing more - when they're actually getting the best of both worlds.

Not sure how I feel about this. The Dual Shock is iconic to the industry and gaming as a whole. Gamers love the controllers. Look what happened the last time they tried to change it (and all they did was remove rumble). I have a feeling whatever they show will be rejected and they'll backpedal to the Dual Shock again. They could show something innovative and amazing. A clone of the 360 controller however is more likely.

Dual Shock forever.

Dont really give a shit what they do with it. As long as its comfortable for people with large hands and doesnt take any power from the console that could be used for games, Im fine them changing things.

Chances Sony put out a commercial during the Superbowl regarding the PS4? i mean superbowl is a few weeks away ...and its a great way to get everyone attention!

I'm extremely wary of this news. The last time Sony tried something new with their controller we got those awful "triggers". And now people are clamoring for that terrible boomerang design and needless LCD screens in the controller.

I'm not expecting a touch screen controller packaged in based solely on price. Maybe a touchpad, like the vita back.

Sony has much better engineers than nintendo and better component procurement costs, but a touschreen controller + the rumored components would be $599 all over again.

Very unlikely, and even if they do, it won't be about the PS4. They'd have to show a game with incredible graphics and say coming xmas 2013. I don't think any game other than COD would have a marketing budget big enough for a superbowl ad anyways.

They were so close to sniping when the Vita and 3DS were going to be the same price... but I wonder if either Sony or MS can eat the cost and put out $350 consoles to make any chance of a Wii U resurrection go up in smoke.

Wouldn't a controller with a touch-screen and these sensors be expensive to make?

How much more expensive to make than a DS3 £40?

I've never liked Sony controllers once they added the dual analogs so I'm all for them changing it up. Add a real dpad and better analog sticks, get rid of those godawful triggers, and stay as far from the the Vita as possible(I hate the shoulder and face buttons on that thing) and it will be a huge improvement.

It's like this:
Vita d-pad > Nintendo d-pad > DS d-pad > shit > 360 d-pad

Hmm the Vita D-pad is basically a Nintendo one only segmented. But I'd agree its very good and much better than the stock 3DS, haven't tried an XL. The DSLite and Wii U are probably my favourites. Saturn one is also very good especially for fighting games.

Hope they still call it dualshock 4. the best thing about rumble being added back to ps3 was that it was called dualshock3. always loved the name.

I hope they keep the analogs symetrical atleast. plus they need the vita d-pad it's godly. love playing fighting games on it.

since the gamecube controller was one of my favorite, i wish they would make a design close to the feel of the GC controller and especially the L/R triggers.

This controller should have been for the PS3. Damn the fools who complained it was a bad controller. It was much better designed for hands than the DS ever was.

i can in no way envision how the boomerang ds3 could have been comfortable for anyone.

Well, to be fair, 2006 sony made plenty of terrible decessions. We've got a different sony now, look at the vita hardware, pretty much the perfect handheld hardware wise.

I can imagine it would have been as comfortable as gripping a steering wheel. The problem with that is a steering wheel is propped up on a column for you. How would you hold the boomerang in your lap comfortably?

yall really want screens on your controllers? yall weird.

edit: it 100% wont have a screen btw

I do not want one on my controller for cost reasons. Makes the initial purchase higher than i would like and replacement controllers would be too much for me.

I hope the controllers are screen free. They cost bloody enough as is without all that gimmicky crap. I just want DS3 with triggers and better battery life.

Not sure I like the idea of a touchscreen on the controller. Wasn't there a similar rumor about the next Xbox controller too? If it's a high tech touchscreen, then it could be cool, I guess.

The biometric stuff could be interesting. I really hope they don't change the analog stick placement though.

you can't put a price on sparks
i actually like the dual shock, so i'll be sad to see it not being used at all.

the next controller is going to be an abomination, i can feel it. the LCD screen better at least be useful, though.

I like the Dual Shock so I'm actually not happy with the news. I'd be specifically angry if it turns out to be a Wii U ripoff because I'm not interested in a controller with a screen at all.

People are acting as though the traditions of the today's controller won't remain intact - like it's only an LCD screen and nothing more - when they're actually getting the best of both worlds.

For the screen to be useful at all it will have to be a decent size, and if that's the case, it will affect the ergonomics of the controller.
