Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

Oh Jeez, can someone shut up all those 360 controllers fan? They are completely irrationals. I'm glad will have a new controller (I hope for the best) but I don't want a step back in the layout, like the 360 controller; it's fine only for the fps/tps, for the rest it's completely broken.

this is nuts. So it could know you're going to press a button before you actually press it

could remove input lag entirely through the magic of 'sensors'

Presuming robustness.

I missed it the first time around, but another of their recent patents mentioned bio-electric sensors in a controller also.

q6QPW.png

138a and 138b there are labelled as biometric sensors in the grips.

This was in relation to a patent titled 'Methods and Systems for Playing Video Games with a Controller Having a Display that Shares Content with a Main Display'. Ahem. It looked at the time from the diagrams etc. that they were talking about Vita or PSP <-> PS3/PS4 interaction but maybe that was just dancing around the real target.

I never really liked the Playstation controllers. They always felt too small and kind of cheap. The 360 controller just feels more solid and substantial. Honestly, I think changing the 360 controller design would be a bigger deal, since the 360 controller has become the de facto default controller for PC gaming too.

This sounds familiar to me:

– Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autosteroptic display that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen. One application from an entertainment perspective seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. Can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers whether it’s the Dual-Moves or the Classic DualShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399 and one with the Omniviewer and a pack-in game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.

The idea of sensors in the grips have been public in patent applications for ages, it's hard to tell what's being invented based on patents and what's real. But in the case of your link, I think I know.

I've used the PS controller far, far more than I ever have the 360 controller and have done so since the PS1 came out.

I still think the Xbox controller is a better design. The SNES roots of the PS3 controller really show through; it is GREAT for 2D games (hence why I always use it for emulators) but it is subpar for 3D games.

And I can't believe they've still not updated the ergonomics for the thing. It's a SNES controller with handle grips. Which was a big improvement back in the day but things have moved on since then... and since the basic shape wasn't built with sticks in mind their positioning just makes it feel much more awkward than any other recent controller.
The back of the thing is practically flat.

This is interesting to me. The flat back on the SNES controller never bothered me. SNES and Gamecube are probably my favorite controllers. The 360 controller is a mutated Gamecube controller in a way, but the weight and build to me are vastly inferior to the Gamecube.

The face buttons feel better on the DualShock also. The only things on the 360 controller that feel perfect to me are the triggers and the analogs, but even then I usually find I prefer the DualShock's convex tips and stick layout.

The shoulders, face buttons, and directional pad on the 360 controller all feel terrible to me, with the latter barely ever doing what I want it to do. There's really no defending the DualShock's triggers though.

that picture.. hmmm.. what exactly does it show..? that you can find hidden stuff via the smaller screen..?

Pretty much (i think). Was shamelessly stolen from this thread> http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=30677353

On topic> The dualshock controller is synonymous with the Playstation brand. I hope the new design doesn't stray too far away from the DS3. I for one, like it :) But then again, I also liked the big original xbox controller - posted above somewhere.

I agree with what a lot of people in here have said, basically copy the Xbox controller as close as is legally possible, but keep the dpad from the DS3, and you have the worlds best controller.

Hell no. The Dualshock dpad is shit.

They need to use a larger version of the utter bliss that is the Vita D-pad.

Come on, it was obviously a mutated dreamcast controller.

edit: the original xbox controller that is. the 360 controller was an evolution of the "s" controller which was just an evolution of the duke which was just larger dreamcast controller (which was basically just a saturn 3D controller) with a second analog.

Ahh, I havent used the dpad on the vita, but I didnt mind the DS3 one. Hate the XBox 360 dpad. Anything to replace it would suit me just fine.

The vita D pad is a beautiful marriage of the Dualshock and Saturn controller's pads with the responsive clickiness of a game boy SP or micro.

Dualshock dpad is shit? My god what a terrible statement.

It's one of the best pads for fighting games so that will tell you right there its quite good. If you want a shitty dpad, look no further than MS dpads

Which is the vast majority of popular 360 games anyway. But the dpad is so bad I had to learn how to use an arcade stick for the first time. The Dual Shock's dpad isn't really optimal either.

And if you don't play fighting games? Segmented D Pads are the utter worst.

360 d pad is a whole further level of fail though.

I personally actually like the DS3. I wont mind it much if it stayed the same, but I guess its also time to shake things up a bit.

Yeah, I agree. Probably the worst of DS3 is the segmented D Pads; it gives a lot of problems in the beat em up special move. But I don't want absolutely a copy of 360 controller; the buttons layout is weird.

Agree. DS3 D-pad is so much better than 360 one. Even browsing 360 menu is a pain in the ass because of the dpad.

It's like this:
Vita d-pad > Nintendo d-pad > DS d-pad > shit > 360 d-pad

I really like the dualshock design, but I think it would be cool of the new console releases with a new controller.

And a reveal in a matter of weeks? That would be awesome. Exciting times, man.

Funny thing about the 360 d-pad is that it's a fundamentally good design that's hampered by a few incredibly stupid complications. If you got rid of the plastic "well" surrounding it and added a dedicated d-pad PCB instead of relying on the big, unwieldy rocker mechanism that reaches all the way down to the main controller board, you'd wind up with the same kind of floating d-pad as the legendary Sega Saturn controller.

Now that you mention it, what I still don't completely understand is now the Dreamcast controller looked like it should have been just as ungainly as the original Xbox controller, but felt so much better. It's been a while since I've used either.

Ugh, yeah, there are some problems with the PS3 controller, I do admit, but I actually prefer it over the 360 controller, and I really was never a fanboy of either of the consoles. I dunno, the D-pad is so bad on the 360 that it makes me cringe every time I have to use it. But the L1/2 and R1/2 definitely need an overhaul. I don't really mid the position of the 2 analog sticks.

I am nervous/excited to see this!

How about the same layout with handles that are actually comfortable to hold? Would that screw up your muscle memory?

I should be able to survive with that. As long as I don't have to relive the horror of forcing myself to go from 1.3 Kissy to 1.1 Honey. :S

The Dualshock is and always has been my controller of choice. I'll see what they end up doing before I judge it, but I don't want them to change it up too much.

Not sure if already mentioned, but Eurogamer has posted the story and says their own sources corroborate the information.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-18-sony-to-drop-dualshock-for-the-next-playstation-report

This information tallies with what Eurogamer has heard from our own sources. We understand that as of six months ago Sony was testing a controller that had an LCD touch-screen on the front and biometrics functionality on the back. These designs, we were told, have changed almost every month, but are for the controller for the next PlayStation.

Biometrics technology captures data from the player's body, such as temperature and heart rate. Half-Life developer Valve has been experimenting with the tech, trying to discover new game experiences that would benefit from it.

Sony did not comment.

The handgrips in back were very thin - the grips on the back of the duke were the size of a football.

Man, if you're gonna get so worked up over a comment on twitter, you might as well get worked up over Kevin Butler on facebook too.

smh.

thank god. i seriously hate the dual shock - always have. really hope the analogues are more like the xbox design and offset. probably wishful thinking though.

curious about the changes mentioned too.

I would give multi-platform games more of a harder look if the controller is better.
