It was rumored a couple weeks before, but that was it.
You're quite right, it was rumour. But it was spot on. What's to say the same isn't happening now with Orbis?

this is nuts. So it could know you're going to press a button before you actually press it
could remove input lag entirely through the magic of 'sensors'
Fuck gimmicks, DualShock is still the best general purpose design out there.
This sounds familiar to me:
– Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autosteroptic display that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen. One application from an entertainment perspective seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. Can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers whether it’s the Dual-Moves or the Classic DualShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399 and one with the Omniviewer and a pack-in game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.

It shows that Ratchet and Clank games are haunted.
I've used the PS controller far, far more than I ever have the 360 controller and have done so since the PS1 came out.
I still think the Xbox controller is a better design. The SNES roots of the PS3 controller really show through; it is GREAT for 2D games (hence why I always use it for emulators) but it is subpar for 3D games.
And I can't believe they've still not updated the ergonomics for the thing. It's a SNES controller with handle grips. Which was a big improvement back in the day but things have moved on since then... and since the basic shape wasn't built with sticks in mind their positioning just makes it feel much more awkward than any other recent controller.
The back of the thing is practically flat.
that picture.. hmmm.. what exactly does it show..? that you can find hidden stuff via the smaller screen..?
The only thing that is touching the flat part on the back is my long fingers, and they just rest there.
Don't you assholes fucking do it. Do not even consider it.

I agree with what a lot of people in here have said, basically copy the Xbox controller as close as is legally possible, but keep the dpad from the DS3, and you have the worlds best controller.

Yeah, most people know about the D-pad, but I think the face buttons on the 360 controller are almost as bad as that. The shoulders, face buttons, and directional pad on the 360 controller all feel terrible to me, with the latter barely ever doing what I want it to do.
Absolutely! They need to use a larger version of the utter bliss that is the Vita D-pad.
Signal to noise ratio just got worst.
Hell no. The Dualshock dpad is shit.

This is interesting to me. The flat back on the SNES controller never bothered me. SNES and Gamecube are probably my favorite controllers. The 360 controller is a mutated Gamecube controller in a way, but the weight and build to me are vastly inferior to the Gamecube.
The face buttons feel better on the DualShock also. The only things on the 360 controller that feel perfect to me are the triggers and the analogs, but even then I usually find I prefer the DualShock's convex tips and stick layout.

No screen on the controller, please....
Ahh, I havent used the dpad on the vita, but I didnt mind the DS3 one. Hate the XBox 360 dpad. Anything to replace it would suit me just fine.
Dualshock dpad is shit? My god what a terrible statement.Hell no. The Dualshock dpad is shit.

Which is the vast majority of popular 360 games anyway. But the dpad is so bad I had to learn how to use an arcade stick for the first time. The Dual Shock's dpad isn't really optimal either.Oh Jeez, can someone shoot up all those 360 controllers fan? They are completely irrationals. I'm glad will have a new controller (I hope for the best) but I don't want a step back in the layout, like the 360 controller; it's fine only for the fps/tps, for the rest it's completely broken.
Dualshock dpad is shit? My god what a terrible statement.
It's one of the best pads for fighting games so that will tell you right there its quite good. If you want a shitty dpad, look no further than MS dpads
And if you don't play fighting games? Segmented D Pads are the utter worst.

It's like this:
Vita d-pad > nintendo d-pad > ds d-pad > shit > 360 d-pad

It makes every nongaming aspect loads better. I'm pretty sure MS and Sony will go for it one way or another.
Come on, it was obviously a mutated dreamcast controller.
edit: the original xbox controller that is. the 360 controller was an evolution of the "s" controller which was just an evolution of the duke which was just larger dreamcast controller (which was basically just a saturn 3D controller) with a second analog.
How about the same layout with handles that are actually comfortable to hold? Would that screw up your muscle memory?
I really like the dualshock design, but I think it would be cool of the new console releases with a new controller.
And a reveal in a matter of weeks? That would be awesome. Exciting times, man.
This information tallies with what Eurogamer has heard from our own sources. We understand that as of six months ago Sony was testing a controller that had an LCD touch-screen on the front and biometrics functionality on the back. These designs, we were told, have changed almost every month, but are for the controller for the next PlayStation.
Biometrics technology captures data from the player's body, such as temperature and heart rate. Half-Life developer Valve has been experimenting with the tech, trying to discover new game experiences that would benefit from it.
Sony did not comment.
Now that you mention it, what I still don't completely understand is now the Dreamcast controller looked like it should have been just as ungainly as the original Xbox controller, but felt so much better. It's been a while since I've used either.
thank god. i seriously hate the dual shock - always have. really hope the analogues are more like the xbox design and offset. probably wishful thinking though.
curious about the changes mentioned too.
