Bioshock Infinite - Review Thread [UP: IGN exclusive split PC/Console review up]

Any of you guys done release day delivery through Amazon? Do they generally deliver earlier than 8pm in your experience?

In all of my experience with Amazon Release Date Delivery, I usually get it by noon that day. (I order a lot from Amazon, and I'd wager 90% of my packages arrive before noon on the delivery day)

Finally something to look forward to.

What's everybody getting it on ( for those without PCs)?

360 or PS3? Have no connection to friend lists. Which is the better version?

Thank you both, great to hear. I'm in downtown Manhattan, so I'd imagine I'll be good to go.

Sounds like the consensus is slightly higher IQ on PS3.

I hope the reviews are right and it surprises me, because I haven't been feeling the hype at all despite preordering, we'll see when it unlocks.

Whenever i have release-date delivery, they don't change the status of the shipment until about 9PM the night before. I would still get it on same-day with no problems.

These reviews are all spoiling a bunch of minor things I really don't want spoiled.

Out of complete boredom I looked at the GAF Facebook today, and someone was spamming crazy spoilers. I'm probably not going to play this for awhile, so me being spoiled was inevitable, but you guys should avoid it at all costs (if you weren't already, which I recommend...).

It's getting great reviews! Oh no! This doesn't bode well with my cynicism!

The default position on all reviews is that all reviews are basically valueless since it's impossible to know who is paid off in one way or another or who is sharing their legitimate perspective.

I don't think cynicism is the negative thing you seem to be implying here, considering the reason people are cynical about reviews is because of the 9 billion game journalism controversies over the past decade. Don't you think it's fair at this point to squint one's eyes just a tad and do the skeptics look?

I was an honors english student through school and college (not trying to brag since I actually hated those classes and the amount of work we had to do, it's just one of the only subjects I excelled at for some reason) so I get most of what they're saying. It's just after a certain point they come across as really trying too hard to come up with new ways to praise the next big AAA game. It really feels like a verbal dick measuring contest between them.

Then I apologize for judging you unfairly. I didn't read any reviews aside from the quick blurbs mentioned in this thread. I only watch GT and Rev3 and I have felt there was a greater disservice in GT's review which focused heavily on gameplay but their score didn't seem to reflect the lack of enthusiasm they had for the game.

Sessler's review was quite colorful but it pretty much brought to attention story elements I didn't know existed in the game. It also restated a lot of what GT said in less words, but still ended up expressing more clearly why he reviewed the game so damn high.

Where did you read that? The only thing I've seen mention differences between the console versions was the GI review, which said PS3 does have a slight edge. Didn't mention why though.

Curious, cause if true PS3 may be using MLAA, where as 360 could be using a blurry version of FXAA. This is what happened with Tomb Raider.

Sessler's review is pretty interesting. The RPS's comments are pretty disappointing though because I get really bothered by static, emotionless responses of NPCs and characters to dramatic events.

Going to get either way so whatever.

So it's up to a 96 Metacritic on 360, with 38 reviews in so far for the PC version... 17 of which are 10/10s. I can't remember the last time I've seen so many perfect scores. Mass Effect 2, I guess.

I am so SO happy this game is getting favorable reviews. I wanted so bad for this game to be what I imagined it would be since it was first shown. It's starting to look that way.

Oh, and it's nice to love Adam Sessler again. G4 just made him, (and the channel itself) just plain unwatchable. Rev3 may just be my go to review site simply because it's a nice format for the review. It still gives a score, but the discussion is nice.

I'm so hyped.

Have been playing Res 6 to hold me over, it's actually a pretty fun big action blockbuster with zombies, but I'm definitely needing to play a game of this quality.

Rev3 gives him time to breathe.

Oh god so much hyperbole in these review quotes. As someone who finished it I expect backlash. Not that it's a bad game by any means, but please manage your expectations.

Just a tad? Of course.

Bending over backwards? Absolutely not.

Did IGN lie to PC gamers to make us buy the game? Their review said that there is no 2 weapon limit on PC. Quote:

As you might expect, though, these are non-issues on the PC, where the number keys offer instant access to vigors and the mouse scroll wheel zips through your full list of guns.

Now they changed it to:

Great reviews! Impressed

At least the meltdowns are not that bad in this thread as they were in Tomb Raider. Some people really wanted that game to suck.

The number of weapons you can use, doesn't seem to have been the deciding factor in either the IGN review or any other reviews I have read, so it was probably a factual error. You can put away your pitchfork.

I've become very wary of reviews after the last couple of games. For example everyone gave 9s to Tomb Raider (except GT which gave them a more realistic 8.5) and mislead me into thinking they avoided obvious flaws with the game when they didn't. It was still a good game but like I said it makes me suspicious of reviews going forward especially on a game like this that had a troubled production.

Giantbomb's review is up

You'll see a lot of BioShock in Infinite, but even if you try to make direct comparisons between the two, it's clear that Infinite is a far better game than its predecessor. It moves at a better pace, with more meaningful and more playable big encounters than BioShock. But it still carries that sense of exploration and the feeling of dread that comes with knowing that everything is just continuing to unravel before your very eyes. Watching Columbia fall while attempting to take Elizabeth away from the floating city is a fantastic way to spend a few days.
Score:

5 out of 5

I mean at this point I'd bend even further than backwards; I'd break my damn back with my skepticism. There's just no way at all to hold reviews in any regard because I personally have no way anymore to tell who's legit and who is not.

Which is why I love neoGAF, of course. A core group of gamers, among them individuals I implicitly trust and respect even when I disagree with them, and in them I find a metacritic that actually matters ;)

Just wanted to throw my NY Times post up here in case you guys missed it. Didnt see it in the OT.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/26/arts/video-games/bioshock-infinite-irrationals-new-video-game.html

High praise.

Everyone can stop worrying. With BioShock Infinite, which goes on sale on Tuesday, Mr. Levine and his colleagues at Irrational have produced yet another video game that is a model of what the medium can achieve. This world — an alternate history with a dollop of science fiction that is set in the United States of 1912 — is dense, fascinating and inventive.

With reasonable critique.

Not everything in the game is perfect. The world and the characters are so well drawn that small, video gamy things feel infelicitous. Why does Booker spend so much of his time rather creepily rifling through the pockets of freshly dead corpses, looking for ammunition and spare change? Why do some bodies turn into searchable lockboxes upon death? Why are there vending machines that sell weapons for coins (thus requiring Booker to spend so much of his time corpse robbing)?

And a nice summation

A game like this, which demands a deep and focused investment of player time and attention, is powerful evidence that narrative for people with long attention spans is thriving. You just have to know where to look.

Oh, so I'm not on your trust and respect list, Ami? Even when I told you Journey was the real deal? Is this because I hate Super Meat Boy?

I see how it is

With reasonable critique.

Nice review, but this part doesn't seem reasonable to me. Complaining about looting? Really? Some elements in games need to remain, because they still need to be FUN, while having an amazing immersive narrative. I also don't really see how it breaks the immersion either, it didn't in Bioshock.

Totally agreed, but this is why I like the mainstream reviews. Get a unique perspective on the stuff we all obsess about. :)

*looks at list*

I didn't have you on the list, actually, but not because I didn't trust you. I add people as I read particularly good posts that also have an extremely specific type of content, so I just must not have had a post draw my attention.

The important qualifier for how I add people to my list is that the post in question must be an example of something I disagree with, but that individual must have posted an eloquent enough defense of his or her point of view that I respected his/her perspective even though we disagree. The mark of true respect is when you can do that.

I'll add you to the list bro. Number 53! :p

I do that a lot, too. DocSeuss hates one of my all-time favorite games Half-Life 2, but he articulates his problems with the game so well sometimes I even find myself nodding along with his posts, even when I disagree vehemently.

If this game inspires enough passion, I'm sure I'll do a big post you can judge for yourself, lol

Sorry that I don't have any links to share right now, I was just basing it off of folks who got a ps3 version this weekend vs. released 360 footage.

This is how I feel about Derrick. A few of my favourite games are ones that he hates with a fiery passion (and I do mean fiery) but we've always had good conversations on GAF and I respect his posts because he always articulates why he dislikes something.
