EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

Please don't sell this site.

For me, this place is a throwback to how video games and the video game community truly was before being invaded, sucked dry by corporations and men in expensive suits who don't know jack about what constitutes great games.

This place is my only and last community to discuss and read about my favorite hobby. Please keep it as it is.

"Malka describes NeoGAF as his life’s work. He joined the community when he was fourteen, took it over when he was 19 and has been running it as a full-time job since 2006. He is now 28, and tells us that he has turned down seven-figure offers from large corporations and gaming networks to buy his site."

Dayuummm

I wonder how would it turn out if a corporation takes over NeoGAF. If it turned out bad, props to Malka for turning it down

10 posts per day, buy more posts with GAF Points. GAF Gold for 50 posts per day and an avatar. (can only use forum avatars, pay for own avatars, buy gaming related avatars)

Oh and EA Forums moderation.

It sounds like Neogaf is just being at the forefront(?) of a very common practice that has been used extensively on other career related fields since the early 2000s (if not sooner).

Here's another way to look at it. Ask yourself "would I have a problem with what I am typing now being on the front page of a newspaper, or the leading article in a magazine"? If not, maybe you should reconsider what you are about to write, because anything you post on a public internet location can end up on a proverbial "front page". There are far too many examples of this for every career using social media, so there's no reason to assume videogame PR/journalism would be any different.

This is a public forum where anyone can read what is said even if not everyone can/will post, and media outlets like Twitter/Facebook are the same. You can't be a professional in any type of field and not learn this, or you will pay dearly when you mess up. Smart professionals would do well to evaluate themselves rather than blaming Gaf for their own mistakes.

One day NeoGAF will have a great schism.

It's destiny. No one entity can last so long. It happens to every religion, society, family.

o_O Neogaf is currently worth $25million?! I...I don't think I can accept these numbers lol

Really? EL is swimming in some nice loot right now. He drives a Porsche 911, has a nice expensive high-rise apartment and recently traveled through a lot of Europe.

He may not be a millionaire yet, but it's only a matter of time. It's wise of him to keep refusing buyouts. Who knows how big this place will actually get.

You'd be surprised. GAF is expensive as FUCK to maintain, and can be quite a headache at times.

From posting for only a few weeks its worth it. I used to be a tad volitile towards GAF years ago but posting and talking to members it's brilliant. The mods especially, act swiftly, which improves the experience even further.

GAF was even namechecked by The Guardian today (very famous UK newspaper).

Damn we're so influential.

All I ask, lurking journalists, is that you register an account and say thanks next time you source something from here. Think how hard your job would be without us telling you what to think.

Evilore's a lot better person than me. If I could get anything close to $25 million for something I had I'd have to stop my arm from shaking so I could sign the sell papers.

Orth story originated from GAF, that's why

GAF is just a forum. It was the gaming sites that wrote the narrative and published it on their sites.

Why are they sourcing a discussion board anyway and if they didn't (because integrity) shouldn't they be taking responsibility?

Why is there apparently a super high resolution iPhone self shot of my head in this article? :/ I thought that was going to be for something thumbnail-sized so I just submitted whatever.

Given that all I do is review games, and so strongly of my own accord that I was called to internet court for giving LEGO City Undercover a 4, I'll decline.

Nice article. Evilore presented and presents well, the latter per the usual. GAF, a work to be proud of even during it's lesser moments.

Should have just Googled you instead, much better results.

NeoGAF’s influence is nonetheless a reflection of how the lines are blurring between the media and the communities its serves.
A/ It's a pretty bold statement to conclude an article that at the same time dismisses the incestuous relationship the media and the industry.

B/ I sure as hell hope the media have higher journalistic standards than the average forum poster.

The super strict mods are the reason GAF is the way it is. This would just be another forum on the Internet without them.

Just give us the word lord, we'll dig up some dirt on these journalists and have them ... terminated.

But seriously, I did find it a bit odd with a picture like that.

EviLores crazy, I'd sell you fuckers out for a bottle of bourbon and a pack of smokes...never mind a million dollars.

In NYC, we offered 50 bucks a piece (25+ people) so that he'd unban fistful of metal. Evilore declined...That's serious integrity right there.

I hope GAF doesn't implode with all the coverage and attention it's receiving.
