Sounds like you haven't played enough of the game, as a lancer TP management comes into play at around lv25. Blindly spamming your abilities will only leave you there auto attacking and unable to combo.

Does it now? guess I'll have to level up.

You pick one of eight classes at the beginning of the game. At level 10, you can unlock any of the other other classes by talking to the appropriate NPC. At level 30, with a particular other class at 15 (at least, in 1.23), you can do quests for certain NPCs to unlock the corresponding Job for your class.

Eventually, there may be more than one job per class, but right now it's just a single job.

Hmm. I wonder if we'll still be stuck behind some harder/longer quests for the more advanced jobs. To be honest, I'd be happy with that. I assume the base classes are then the ones you started with in 1.0?

For now, the base classes are the ones you started with in 1.0, plus Arcanist (which is tied to the Summoner job).

People are unhappy with it mainly because:
a) It's not FFXI
b) It's not FFXIV 1.23
c) It's not FFXIV 1.0 (yes, really)
d) It's not TERA/GW2/Some other MMO they really like
e) It's too much like WoW (supposedly)
f) It's not enough like WoW

There are more than 100,000 Beta testers, and I'm pretty sure all of them can find something to complain about.

None of this is relevant to the point that most of those people would also find it objectively bad even without something else to compare it to.

I'm still waiting for my beta invite as an original FFXIV launch player, but Squenix seems to be in no hurry. And yes, I found the original combat in FFXIV to be awful and the reversion to auto-attack even worse. I would be in the camp that wants combat to be dynamic and action-packed, not stand in one spot and watch myself hit the mob and spam my skill bar.

Seems like I'll stick with my conjurer then to 30 to get to WHM a bit quicker. I guess I'll know a bit more once I'm actually in the beta and may mess around with a few other classes since there's the wipe after 3, but no wipe after 4.

You mean subjectively bad, surely? Because it is not objectively bad.

Well, not sure if that's clear to you, but if you want to play WHM, you need to level CNJ anyway, since WHM is a job you get to equip on your CNJ. It's not separate, think of jobs as a specialization.

Yeah, CNJ has to be 30 before I can equip WHM. My CNJ from 1.0 was early to mid 20s before I quit. Old characters being held over, I should be able to pick up where I left off and finish off the last levels I need on CNJ to unlock WHM.

I'm only looking to try out other classes in phase 3 (if I get in) since there's supposed to be a wipe before phase 4.

Most combat mechanics in many MMOs would be considered objectively bad if you were coming from any single player game. There are limitations in the nature of MMOs which naturally make some types of combat infeasible but really most MMOs have shitty combat when compared to single player games of any kind, RPG or otherwise.

I can't wait to try out the Monk... wow!

I'm also looking forward to seeing some pictures of the summoner in action eventually as well. Those are pretty much the only two classes I've got my eyes on.

His point was that the definition of objective means that there is no element of opinion involved. So it cant possibly be objectively bad, by definition

"Considering" something objectively bad is a contradiction in terms

excellent shoots, the character models are unmatched, it's not overly crazy like TERA and it's not as bland as Everquest, it just looks... final fantasy!

also, a disclaimer, people expecting this game to be like FFXI's will likely be disappointed.

Why are people so down on slower pace combat? FFXI was pretty damn slow but at least it encouraged team play and some level of thought. I can't say the same thing about this new wave of action mmos.

I'm keeping my eye on this. Do people who purchased FFXIV get any perks? Free months? Beta access? Anything?

In what way? I definitely don't expect it to have the same grind... but things like huge zones, good overarching stories, really good dungeons that encourage a ton of cooperation, Being able to experience every class across one character... is none of this stuff in the game?

I don't mind slower paced combat, but I don't have the friends or the time to really appreciate it anymore personally. All of my old XI friends either crazy or simply out of touch with reality (or both). Screw them.

As for perks, the most prominent is the 'Legacy Players' who had paid at least three months subscription last year. They've been getting preference in the closed beta tests and will get a permanently reduced sub fee when A Realm Reborn launches (in addition to some perks like exclusive mounts and stuff).

I'm trying to cut back on the games I play. I'm sort of hoping the reboot will keep me playing less games.

An MMO where I can bounce between PC and Console like I did with ffxi on PC, PS2, PS3 and eventually Xbox 360. I bought it for every platform I could play it on.

I'm trying to stay positive on this reboot. I have old eqoa and ffxi real life friends asking me about this all the time on the ps3 side.

Oddly enough most of them were red mages at high levels. They are taping their veins hoping this will be the next mmo high.

If not this, Everquest Next?

Certainly looks impressive, particularly the lighting. One thing that concerns me though is the absolute mass of amped-up spell effects. It implies one of two things: Either strategy is not a major component of the game, or the spell effects will get in the way of the strategy present. They're simply too dramatic and flashy and would be impractical in group combat situations, IMO.

I'd still like to try a free demo at some point, but I'm not sold on it at this stage.

All the things you listed are in the game lol, but ARR is a different beast than FFXI and rightfully so, this ain't no FFXI-2. About the combat mechanics: I have to wait until Phase 3 the decide, since that is supposedly when a bunch of changes will happen.

Off the top of my head Tera requires a lot of team work. Sooo I don't know what games you are thinking of.

All I'll say is that are some things I hope get modified in Phase 3 concerning combat, because it's by far the weak link and the only thing I could see killing the game. But playing it on a gamepad renewed my faith enough to keep going.

In terms of grinding, it can still be pretty grindy but the approach is less about party xp grinds and more quest oriented now ie: quests, dungeon raids..etc.

your first class to max level will be fast but your subsequent classes would be considerably slower.

More traditional, with some emphasis on positioning for attacking enemies from back/side for certain skills (though this is common in lots of traditional MMOs too, I just mean you can't quite stand there all the time, like in FFXI for example).

What? There were many weapon skills that worked effectively under the correct position in FFXI. Thief, Samurai and Dragoon had some of these WSs.

Also in FFXI, certain weapons and shields (especially the Aegis Shield iirc) were more useful under correct positioning.

I think the wipe happens after Phase 2, since they will be implementing character importing (from 1.0) into Phase 3. What happens after the beta ends entirely, I have no idea.

Btw, on a side note to those wondering:

I played FFXI for about 4 years, primarily on the PS2 (2004). this is my first time touching an MMO since that time. And i'll tell you, after just 2 days of playtime, im already feeling the effects of withdrawal. The game IS good, and the flaws that you may experience are fixable.

I Can't wait to see how Linkshells, raids, NMs and HNMs, and all of the sort works. I'm very interested in the synthesizing systems and the AH. Since armor is now bound to you, I Want to see how this may affect the sales of rare items/equipment. I've yet to experience any of this in the beta. Yet, I'm still feening. The music is fantastic.

That is all :)

There will be 2 wipes at least: after phase 2, and after phase 3, since they're testing Legacy characters import.

If everything goes well during phase 4 (Open Beta), progress will carry over into the release version.

Remember, limit break system supposedly starts in phase 3, so to those complaining about the battle system now should really wait until then at the least

That FR :S.

It's gotta to be in the teens for the ps3, Iam usually not sensitive to FR but thats bad.

That version was only 70% optimized according to Yoshi-P. They are working with Sony to increase the performance. It's obviously not going to run amazingly well though.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Conjurer, hook it into my veins!!!

So what does everyone think opinion wise? Do you see this MMO "really" succeeding with a subscription model? Is there enough justification to bring in enough subs?

Kinda curious myself, as there are practically no big sub based mmos left right now that aren't WOW.

flat on its face it will fall.

There aren't enough people who care that will sustain this..which is a shame because it looks gorgeous..but I can't do the point and click combat of mmo's and this doesn't look like its going to deviate..otherwise I'd jump on this sinking ship.

I'd say try it out anyways if you can, I think it feels a lot better than most traditional MMOs. It may not survive on a subscription, but I will jump in for a while at least. A PS3 version in could probably help it a lot.

If it feels like FF 12, I would so do it, somehow that clicked with me.. but i doubt it :(

This sounds both good and bad. Good in that as a former FFXI player, it's nice to hear someone else who played FFXI thinks it good. Bad in the fact that I know what FFXI did to me and my life when I became invested in it years ago. I hope self-restraint has been added to my vocabulary.
