Is it just me or do the Wizard and Elf just seem COMPLETELY boring due to everyone else being so exaggerated? Like, they don't fit in with the rest of the team.

Also, Vanillaware makes awesome looking monsters. Why can't I ever play as them? Let me play as a skeleton or a ogre or orc or something.

My problem with the character design isn't so much the sexualized aspect of it, but rather, the outrageously comical proportions.

I mean, a lot of Odin Sphere's art was clearly sexualized.
But I always felt that Kamitani's artstyle and it's detail-oriented focus shone through more in art like this.
The exaggerated proportions makes sense within the style they are going for, I guess, although the hyper-sexualization looks a tad ridiculous.

That hopefully won't matter if the gameplay is good, though.

Naaa, the fact that they're more "normal" in appearance makes everyone else look even more ridiculously buff/strong/etc, they're perfect foils for the rest of the cast.

I'm really glad Kamitani & Co. Are going all out with the variety of designs. It's something that often gets lost in HD works, 2D or 3D, becuase things become more complex and/or time-consuming to bring to life properly, with more varied body styles. They don't seem to care at ALL with this game though, and I truly appreciate that, as it's one of the things I loved about old SNK games. They'd have Characters like Mickey (AoF), Earthquake, Caffine Nicotine, and Sieger (SamSho), or Chang and Choi (KoF), and these guys had builds and motions unlike anyone else.

You see such celebrated less and less in gaming, so it's pretty nice to see it respected and exploded all over, with this game.

This is what I truly wanted out of "HD": I didn't want the same art, worse animated, but with more sharp, little lines; I wanted similiar to what we had with sprite / pixel work, if not better, with lines that actually DO something. I feel Higher Definition is wasted, when motion LOSES definition and character, as a trade for sharper artwork. It's like working out to get in shape, but somehow lowering your stamina and strength, while becoming more chiseled. Makes no sense!

And it would be nice to play some of his beast; but you're getting to play people that look like Odin Sphere's NPCs and background characters with THIS game, so maybe you'll get a chance to play a Lizardman or Huge Oni in DLC / The next game...

But crazy propotions like this have existed in basically all his works that allow it. I think it mostly comes through here so much because of 2 things:

- The Animation.
- The fact it's on the main characters.

But this isn't suprising for this game's genre: The best Beat 'em Ups are always like that.

While platformers had us playing tiny Megaman, BEU's had us playing Haggar VS Andore. One of the biggest jumps between Streets of Rage 1 and 2, came from the detail and size of the character sprites. Much like the Fighting Game genre, the BEU genre always put more time and effort into it's player characters; it's a traditional hallmark.

Kamitani is following long time game design tradition, just with his own style, and the freedom to push it to 11.. heck, probably 14. Even when you look back at the characters he helped create for Princess Crown (As the Lead Designer / Planner):

You can see the beginnings of the style he matured into what we've seen in his latest games.

But it's the fleshing out of things in this game, that's getting so much attention; if the sorceress acted in ways that didn't put her sexy body parts constantly on display, as the center of her movements, stances, artwork, attacks, etc... there'd probably be little concern beyond the character artworks.

Most of the time, once you get past the art, such oversexualization only showes up in a move or 2, or in "stage clear" poses or something. But in this game, Floppy Sorcerror Jiggle, Amazon Booty-Quakin, Dwarf's bulging thighs and Rock-like Musculature are going to be exaggerated in everything they do. At least every character has SOMETHING the animators get to over-do in this game; Knights armor motion, Wizard's flowing robes and Hair, and Elf's nibleness, arrow-spending, and mini-cloak movement...

As an aside, I'd love to see an HD version of Princess Crown's Gradriel in this game as a guest player character, as well; PC was published by Atlus (also in part by Sega, though)... and she'd be 80% over-done fanservice free!
Until she transformed into her adult form... Then she's be Sorceress 2.0! Oy.
So it's a Win for everyone! Ha.

But it's kinda dumb though, the reverse sexism card doesn't mean shit in the reality of things.

To me the female character designs in this game are hilarious but they fit the general art direction so whatever.
