Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen |OT| deep down darkness

For those that dont know, If you are trying to class specific drops from BBI final boss, once you acquire the cursed items from him, sleep at the bed at the entrance of BBI. Then change you and your pawns vocation to the class you want the items for, then purify. If you dont get want you want, godsbane or reload the last checkpoint (Where you slept last) and try again until you get it.

Holy balls, PSN is killing me. Gave in abd bought DA after reading the unlimited ferry stones bit. But 12gb Download .... it's been almost 24 hours and barely past 31%

Shouldn't take that long.

I will quote this for every page. :)

To anyone on the fence about this game I would say get it. The first hour is a terrible bore that almost made me give up on it, but after that the game really becomes engrossing. I'm hooked.

Is this game comparable to Dark Souls in terms of quality?
As much as I love the game, no. Dark Souls is a far more refined product. Dogma has a much more varied combat system however, taking full advantage of all three dimensions in a manner that Dark Souls cannot match. They're both fantastic games - Dogma has a lot of room to grow in future installments.

Actually, what I'm noticing that is that the RNG for the game will already predetermine what several kinds of gear it can be based on the combination of vocations for you and your pawn. Last night, I had this issue:

I had two Lv3 Weapons and here's what happened when I purified as the following classes:

  • Assassin/Sorc = Lv3Ranger Bow & Lv3Archistaff
  • MysticKnight/Mage = Lv3Archistaff & Lv3Archistaff
  • Fighter/Fighter = Lv3Mace & Lv3Hammer
  • Strider/Strider = Lv3Daggers & Lv3Bow
  • Mage/Mage = Lv3Archistaff & Lv3Archistaff

I did some of these twice and got the same result. It seemed more predetermined than I thought after the vocation trick. This totally sucked, I needed a Lv3 Mage Staff and kept getting the Sorc version. I did get my Lv3 Daggers and Bow though which was nice.

So you can switch ng+ to hard mode if your original run was normal?

Dark Arisen is my first time delving into DD. Is it worth picking up any of the DLC from the Xbox Marketplace or is it all already included??

Man, this game is really overwhelming to a new player. I only
just killed the Hydra that attacks the first village you arrive at
, and I won't lie - I had no idea what I was doing.

I feel like I need to be taking more advantage of items, but the item management is a bit clunky feeling to me. I also feel like I should just push forward until I hit a wall and then start learning more about the systems in place...Worry about it as I need it.

Game is INCREDIBLY good, but as I said - it feels like there's a lot going on that a new player simply cannot grasp at first. Like me. :)

Polish. Something this game really has very little of outside of the combat.

That's not quality, that's preference.

Sorry, but most people are going to say "quality" is something broader than "polish". Polish leads to quality, but is not necessarily important.

Damn that sounds discouraging for a new player coming in :/

Any tips guys? Like what class to chose for MC and what for pawns and so on?

You can use Black Cat to make copies of materials found in BBI. Highly recommended.

And you can change the chest loot with a Godsbane. Also recommended.

Can you elaborate on those 2 points ?

By materials, do you mean the cursed item or the material to upgrade ?

And how should i use the godsbane ?

What's up with people using vague terms to describe stuff in this game? Let's get specific:
  • What do you guys not like about the Inclination System (Pawn AI)?
  • What do you think Capcom should do to make it better?
  • Why is the save system so damn incoherent (ie, 1 Save, Inn/Rift Save, Save & Continue, Retry at Last Save, Continue at last Inn/Rift Save)?

There's no best class for pawns or MCs. It all comes down to what you find more exciting.

True, except Rangers with Blast Bolts in the endgame are the new Assassin's magic build Heaven Key Master Kill build.

Just wait for the installation. Tip, turn off media servers before you install. It literally took me 4 hours to get to 91 percent, then I just cancelled, and turned media server off and it was done in 10-15 minutes.

Big week for new entries on the UK software charts

The dead have risen, and they've gone all the way to the top of the UK software chart as Dead Island: Riptide takes the number 1 spot. The game sold under half the number of units of the original Dead Island title, with 71 per cent picked up for Xbox 360.

It was an exciting week all round for the top ten with four new entries. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen entered at 3, offering fans a mix of new content and 2012's Dragon's Dogma, while Namco Bandai's Star Trek debuted at 4 despite poor reviews. 3DS title LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins made it in at 8.

Nice, I loved dead island and like riptide already. And Dark Arisen #3 is higher than I expected, even beat Star Trek

So I'm guessing that chances of Dragonforging a 1 star weapon are super low? 6 or so Wyrm fights later and both my bow and daggers are not dfed. Am I doing something wrong?

It's taking me a long time to get anywhere and do anything. I'm level 19 and it's starting to become a bit of a slog.

I'm doing a quest that I got from Ser Maximillian in Gran Soren. It's the one where you have to help clear a fortress of goblins. I finally got there, went under the fortress through some holes, I found a lever, put it in, and the door opened. Then while I was trying to find my way back there is a cut scene and a bunch of goblins are jacking some knight. Then it says the quest failed and I have to report this back in the town. But it took me forever to get there. I quit right there for the night.

Can I still get into the fortress? I don't even see how this fuck up is relevant to me.

I don't get people whining about slow PSN download speeds. It took me less than 120 minutes to download the 11 GB Dark Arisen PSN version.

The installation was horrible though, ~20m.

In other news: I suck at this game a lot. Picked Strider and at around rank 23 I get gang-raped by bandits pretty easily. I also dislike the retry system in this game, it starts you off like ten years from where you died.

Does this game not have target lock for combat? The camera is unweildly and its really hard to strike accurately with no lock
No target lock/lock-on, but some of your melee skills target the closest enemy. Plus Strider has this awesome dagger lunge attack that is just great to dash through enemies.

Yes, but you will be forced to start the playtrough from the beginning.

EDIT:

All DLC for vanilla Dragon's Dogma are included in Dark Arisen.

So that's not ng+ that's just making a fresh file. So dificulty is locked on your save from start. Figured.

It takes getting used to, and is what gives combat that weird loose feeling, but it works. You def have to get used to it, but it teaches you to aim your shield, watch where you swing your sword, and try not to lock yourself into animations.

Materials to upgrade.

In front of a chest and before you open it, save. Then open the chest and if you don't like the loot, use the godsbane. Each chest have 3 to 5 pre-determined items.

Yeah, Dark Souls does a lot better, but who cares if I don't have as much fun?

The game checkpoints quite frequently. That is unless you were spending a lot of time out in the field and never went to rest/reached a milestone in quests. I didn't like the checkpoints much. Would've been nice to have multiple files but it seems they were originally going for a very different approach to these games. No fast travel, one file... punishment or something.

Can someone explain fast travel to me? From what I've gathered, I can lay a crystal anywhere and warp from the capital to that crystal. Is that correct?

I don't see how that helps me much though. What I really want is a way to warp back to the capital after I complete a mission. Running back is extremely tedious. FYI, I'm about level 18 right now.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but I found it strange that; I just started vanilla Dragons Dogma in the last week or so, but when I go to my achievements list it lists the game as Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen.

All in all, I'm finding the game starts pretty slow and boring. None of the quests are really grabbing me and I don't really get how I'm supposed to figure out which quests are primary vs secondary. I also can't seem to find any of those summoning stones to summon more pawns...where should I be looking? I'll stick with it for a while as the combat does seem pretty cool, but the rest of it just seems to be lacking in any real interesting hooks.

This very same thing happened to me the first time that I played it.

As for the fortress, you'll probably have to rest at an inn for several days to respawn the knight guy and then retake the quest from Maximillian. The game isn't very clear on how to handle these things. For the most part, it's confusing, but surprisingly lenient.

The way that I beat it was I killed all of the goblins/ogres prior to opening the door.

At the very beginning of the game there is a stone that you must go to in order to summon more pawns. It is right after you meet Rook, about 15 minutes in. You go to the nearby fortress marker on your map and do a quest upon speaking to the stone and then you may make/summon pawns. About 30 minutes or so into the game, IIRC.

A fresh playtrough. But you will keep all the items and the stats.

It works both ways. You can warp from Gran Soren to the portcrystal and from the portcrystal to Gran Soren.

You can warp back to the capital after finding the port cyrstals there (right outside the pawn guild).

Thanks for the advice on the fast travel. I wish it would have been a little clearer. I completely missed that Ferrystone area in front of the Pawn's Guild.

Yeah, Dark Souls does a lot better, but who cares if I don't have as much fun?

Where I think it excels most is the sheer variety of gameplay on offer and how you can change at any time you want, while carrying over some abilities and augments from other vocations. But why it excels here is represented by the abilities in general and how well they define their respective vocation. Simply put, Dragon's Dogma without question has some of the most badass abilities I have seen in the action/RPG genre.

Then of course you have to factor in all of the little things that enhance the gameplay, such as how enemies start to bruise, bleed and show damage, how the flesh starts to burn off of them when they catch fire, how you can get soaked and it extinguishes your lantern, the use of night/darkness in general, climbing enemies, the platforming aspects, etc. Weigh all of that together, and you have something that is quite unlike anything else out there.

Indeed, it's already an amazing game because of all of these factors combined, now just imagine where it can go from such a foundation. Pretty exciting to think about.

As a warrior with 3 pawns at level 16 I'm getting my ass kicked by the bandits at the fortress. One or two of the bandits will just one shot me. Am I doing something wrong? I have Sinew and a few attacking skills, and my pawn is a healer mage with a lightning attack and boon spell.

I normally grab a strider for ranged attacks and a tanky character. I've had to resort to going around the bandits to even explore that area as there are too many to fight when half of them 1hko me.

I agree.

This has some of the best gameplay ever. If Dragon's Dogma 2 were announced for next-gen right now, it would be my most anticipated game.

This is the first rpg in a long time that has managed to keep me playing. I just can't wait to see what skills I learn next, what enemies I'll run in to, where the next quest will take me.

The sense of adventure reminds me of Zelda 1. It's dangerous to go alone, take this.
