Cool.

It's nice to see Sega let people that give a shit about Sonic do these releases. Death to the Backbone emulation ports.

Neat. I love the Sonic fan community. I think I've seen at least 4 different engines they've made that are designed to be able to play Sonic just like the original. They've got a lot more drive than the Mario hacking community in that respect

Sonic CD on iOS was super polished, so I'm looking forward to it.

I would love something on the 3DS or Vita as well, though.

Glad SEGA finally smartened up about their classic stuff.

I mean, remember Sonic Genesis on GBA?

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.

It's almost like they have a passion for Sonic. I should research this "Sonic Passion" further using Google.

So what happens with the current XBLA titles? Discontinued or...? I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay extra for a game I own 5 times already :-/

Ooh so 'these' are going to update the current mobile iOS versions then ? I am all for that, I own sonic 2 iOS already so I should jump on the original soon.

The reason the emulation sucks is because they half arsed their mega drive emulator, when it originally came out on iOS it was around the 3G era and it chugged like mad due to how it had to refresh the screen, running the games in the window framed like mode improved it.

To think these are being completely updated with taxmans awesome retro engine is really amazing and I applude sega for doing this.

yes. Smooth 60 fps (unlike the GC version) 1:1 graphics (without the weird water of the GC ver.) with native widescreen, playable Tails, extra control options (S2 spindash), soundtrack selector, and some nice little touches coming from the betas (music loop files, restored Sonic monitor in the background of Q Q G.F....)

Hm thanks, rebought

If this ends up coming for consoles, I will certainly get it, however I would be far more into a full 2011 Sonic CD like upgrade for Sonic 3 and Knuckles, by far the best of the Genesis games, and it deserves a badass re-release.

Sega should let this Christian Whitehead fellow helm a Sonic the Hedgehog 5 designed to Sega Genesis spec
and release it on a cartridge
.

Taxman and Stealth? Hot damn. Put it on something that has actual controls and you've got my money, Sega.

Who's gonna remix the music? Sega's composers themselfs? I'd hope so.

Doesn't need to be, it's not really a remix:

To clarify on the whole 'Remastering' thing:

The arrangements are identical to the originals, using FM synthesis. But they have been put together in a DAW environment and given an actual mix as opposed to simply recording the existing music. The Drum samples are sourced from the original synthesiser so they're super clean and crisp too.

I assume if they bring it to consoles, it will be for PS4, Durango and Wii U, with PS3 and 360 only getting them if they replace the respective Backbone ports.

As for extras? Bring in the stuff from Sonic Jam including the Spindash and make Tails and Knuckles playable! Hell, let's patch Knuckles into Sonic CD as well.

As for a potential Sonic 2 like this? That needs Knuckles because if there is to be a definitive version of Sonic 2, it needs to bring in "Knuckles in Sonic 2" mode which came from locking on Sonic 2 to Sonic & Knuckles.

Naturally a definitive Sonic 3 & Knuckles should have the ability to play Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles alone as well as the Blue Sphere minigame. Both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles should have their additions from Sonic Jam as well.

I'm pretty excited for this and do hope it comes to PC!

I recently bought Sonic CD on the PS3. I would buy this remaster in a heart beat if it was on one of the consoles. I would really love a Wii U version, no way I would get this on iOS.

Sonic 1 is one of my favorite games!

Kinda want this on the Google Play store now for two reasons, as you'll see below. Thanks, Rlan (and TimmiT, who's been taking screencaps on his twitter feed).

The US version should update soon, I guess? Sonic's such an old game that it was released on iOS as "international version" and "US version".

ooh it's out, going to download the fuck out of this. I am willing to pay for sonic 1 again as it's my childhood game and I support taxman and his efforts too.

I would imagine they'd add this to PSN/XBLA eventually, just not replacing the existing versions. Microsoft would have a fit if they tried to 'patch' the Backbone versions for no cost, when they could make some cash with a newly advertised re-release.

Releasing it now on android lets them bugtest and get Sonic 2 ready for a double pack later. Just a personal guess though, don't assume I know what I'm talking about.

I'll buy this on IOS to support Taxman later, probably won't play it though. Can't stand touch controls.

I'd expect these sonic ports to be downloadable on next gen consoles, sega's way of re-milking the already milked classic games :p am I am happy to buy them again with this effort involved.

Beat all of GHZ on my iphone 5, the widescreen is glorious like it is with sonic cd, the spindash is a nice extra and I have already used it twice without thinking about it even though I am used to classic sonic 1.

In summery so far:

Widescreen
Sonic 1 japan background enhancements
Sweet front menu screen with 3D box art and cart which you can change to match your region (PAL box ftw)
Music sounds more upbeat, drum track might be a little louder.
The time attack mode has gamecenter leaderboard support, also achievements.
Special stages are smooth-like-mode-7 style now, not limited to rotating 32 directions, but they play just the same (outside of very minor physics changes)

Collisions and physics ever so slightly different due to the retro engine but they are not game breaking, you will feel it however if used to the original.
A few times the game ignored my jump input even though the button art on the screen showed as pressed, could be a bug.

It might be my wonky jumping but the GHZ eggman can not take damage until he starts swinging his ball and chain, stops you getting those 5-6 early hits in, but I might have just missed due to the widescreen and me falling off the platform twice at the beginning.

Really looking forward to this. I hope they give a similar update to Sonic 2.

I also hope that this will lead to Sonic 3 coming to iOS.

Or you could just connect your phone to your TV via MHL and use a DS3 controller or something like the iControlPad.
This is where the android version will shine (not involving any kind of hack to get a pad working like on iOS)

Just beat the game,
sonic & tails with a new title screen woo

I grabbed the Android version and I've played a few stages with my Xperia Play. It's awesome. 60fps, no slowdown, none of the music channels cut out for sound effects.

I also accessed the level select and debug mode using the old code and it works. It's got options for turning speed dash on/off, Sonic 1 spike death, limit air speed, limit ground speed. Also, there are monitors available in the debug mode for the 3 sonic 3 ring protectors (lightning, fire, water bubble), chaos emeralds, and Super Sonic.

I tried to grab some screenshots but whenever I try it goes into the menu. You can still make it out though.

Can someone get some better screenshots?

You did this using the buttons on the Xperia Play? And where do you do this cause if you touch the Sonic 1 title screen it starts the game.
