Geoff Keighley: PS4 Used Game DRM (EDIT: but now apparently on hold)

If they have changed their minds, and I think it's safe to say they're thinking about it, the message is 1000% clear.

Don't ever let anyone tell you to not complain about eroding consumer rights. Don't ever let anyone tell you to wait until E3 before making a final judgment.

BE VOCAL NOW! It clearly works much better than being silent.

And when you think about it, it just doesn't seem like Sony's really in a good position to do this, the PSN hack took them out for, what, a month and a half? And now they demand us to be online and verify games? Though I guess with publishers like EA that will play hardball it's a rock and hard place to them, but I'd rather EA just be put on the spot until they actually do collapse under their hubris. Too bad those sports licenses probably give them a solid core to maintain themselves, without those they probably would be at real risk of backlash ultimately getting to them.

I don't follow.

In terms of multiplatforns, people were happy to buy 360 versions where they needed to pay for online, which was a huge change at the time.

As such I don't see why the PS4 could have the same lack of new used game and always online restrictions and automatically win.

Hence it may not be forced as companies like EA might not be worried about the US market caring.

Famousmortimer, do you know who has picked up Dead Rising 3? Crazy Buttocks suggested it was no longer a One exclusive....

No worries if you can't talk about it, just thought I'd ask.

Dead Rising 3 is a Xbone exclusive according to a few people I know. So is Hawken (though that will be on PC and phones as well).

Could be true or false, I'm buying the PS4 either way. All those gaf insiders have been wrong in my time on this site. Reiko, thuway have had false information; I'm not saying they don't have factual stuff but some of the things they've said these past few months have been wrong.

I personally believe there will be some kind of used game DRM. I hope I'm wrong.

Good to see this Thread Title edit. Can we please do so with some of the Xbox One threads that used Misquotes also? For the sake of more clarity.

Didn't they change their story several times though? While this is some guy commenting on 'things he has heard', most of the quotes we had about the Xbox One came from Microsoft staffers/support staff themselves, iirc.

Seriously? You think EA would drop online pass if they knew Sony wasn't going to do it? Fully believable. Only thing is, if it doesn't require to be online, I'm not sure how that will work. Still all this is making me very happy I'm mainly a PC gamer.
When it turns out Sony doesn't change anything from the current model implemented this generation, which I think is what's going to happen, I'm sure you will be first in line to offer an apology to me.

Ok I'm kidding, but I really do think I'm right.

edit: wow, looking that way already huh, hmm.

Why pc though, steam hasn't aallowed used games ever
I'm still buying my games boxed on PC and have no problem using them on offline computers without any problem, and I don't see why I would have troubles selling them.

I don't know if there's more and more games that require steam or anything like this. If that's the case, that's indeed a problem. But as long as there's games that don't require online authentification on PCs, that's still better than XBox One.

The whole internet is up at arms about this and I could see why but this will never affect me. For one I always buy my games new. Two, my friends don't play the games I do. Thirdly, my friends won't have a new console until two-three years from now.

I updated the op with famousmortimer's comments.

Also, I've read some comments regarding my "misleading" title. I felt Geoff's "white knight" comment strongly indicated Sony implementing a DRM, so I felt comfortable naming Sony. Obviously it's all rumor mongering at this point.

And you still didn't put Geoff's actual quote in the op.

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
If worse comes to worst, I can see publishers using it at their discretion like EA and their silly codes.
Remember, Sony said it had the technology for it, but would leave it up to the devs.

I think that's what Keighley meant, and he's just rehashing it to give him something to write about.

EDIT: SONY, DON'T DO IT!

If the DRM thingy is confirmed no PS4 for me during its first months.
If it's implemented wildly, no PS4 until price drop and solid library, and the later is problematic since I have a decent gaming PC.

Spy Cam? Really now? They've already said they won't be 'spying' on anyone. If you believe they will I have a tin foil hat to sell you.

Also, yeah figures Sony don't get nearly the amount of shit MS got for this.

I would actually say this is a surprise, going by Sony's comments a few months ago.

Wait what? I personally wouldn't touch either system if this is true and the majority of posts I've seen are saying the same thing. There's nothing fanboyish about the Microsoft hate at all.

I've been called a MS fanboy during and after the Playstation conference, and now I'm being called a Sony fanboy. Console wars are ridiculous.

The curse of forums sadly.

I MUST HAVE AN OPINION ON THE TITLE AND A BRIEF GLANCE AT THE OP, THE REST OF THIS WAFFLE IS PROBABLY NOT RELEVANT. RAAAAGE

To be fair, we still should not back off on these companies, more pressure on them and threats to their profit margins can change policies. I had already started contacting consumer rights organizations for Microsoft. If we find out Sony is going down that path come E3 i will do the same. The only way to change anything is to fight back.

If they have actually chosen to drop it I expect confirmation at E3.

So you care more about being able to trade in your games than you do about playing good games?

No. But trading in games fund about half of my future purchases. Without that ability, I'b buy less games, and take less risks. I wouldn't be buying any game that simply interests me. I'd have to know the game will be awesome or i won't buy it.

That's not to say I won't be getting Xbox One. I will. But as things stand it'll be just for the exclusives (and late in the generation) and I'll get all my multiplats on PS4. If Sony also goes through with it, I'll have to re-evaluate my stance on console gaming.

Here's hoping Sony have shied away after all the backlash

IF Sony actually backs out of this... I'm not sure how Xbox cant. I mean wouldn't that kill them?

But if what famousmortimer says is true then it means that Yoshida was lying about Sony never considered an always online function.
Damn. :/

In a roundabout way, as long as we can confirm that the PS4 doesn't need any internet access at all as long as the game isn't strictly/mainly multiplayer, then that should pretty much eliminate any worries about DRM, because unless there's an actual internet connection, there's no way they can check.

Why are you so scared to actually put the direct quote in the op?

It's obvious that Sony would do this. The used game restrictions are a dream come true for the big publishers so it would only make sense that Sony do this to be on an equal playing field with Microsoft. Also, love seeing the tin-foil hats coming out saying the sources are Microsoft.

Again, I don't see a big deal with this and it certainly won't push me to a PC only future.

Yes you've made it clear many times in other threads that you only care about yourself and are willing to shill .

Just to get everyone on the same page here, famousmortimer (our source in this thread) has confirmed that the Sony system is real and was planned for launch, and his sources are now suggesting it's getting shelved due to backlash.

That would make sense. I could see Sony and MS progressively deploying the new DRM restrictions with key triple-A first party titles, similar to the way Half-Life 2 did with Steam. A slower roll out will go by unnoticed by most gamers with little more than a grumble here and there.

There's too much risk involved with having their new systems sink in their first year if this negative press reaches the mainstream audience.

Either way, it's coming.

If Sony does it, I'm out of the console market completely.

I'll upgrade my PC and join the master race full time.

If have to deal with same DRM as I do on PC, just might as well keep all my games in one place.

But you won't get ALL the games on PC...that's the rub. They'll be too many great games on PS4 and Xbone to resist the urge for most. Reality is..I've never bought a used game in my entire gaming life..so really it makes zero difference to me. And I find myself buying more digital releases...when you don't have a download cap with your ISP...its really convenient.

MS communicated it badly..but if Sony doesn't do it as widely as MS it will happen organically anyway as more and more people buy digital over physical media.

I do want to warn that these decisions do flipflop (as evidenced by what i posted earlier this week vs now). I'm not 100% on this. The people I know aren't 100% on this. Some suit can come in and fuck the entire thing up. So I wouldn't go running around screaming "HAHA SONY ISN'T DOING IT!"

Exactly my point of both hope and skepticism. My preference here would be that Sony seizes on this, ships a drastically more consumer-friendly platform than Microsoft, and destroys them in the marketplace. My fear is that with this system already implemented, the decision-makers at Sony might be feeling worried today, but feedback from EA and Activision (or simply watching the controversy with the Xbone blow over) will tempt them back into shipping with the system anyway.

Good to see this Thread Title edit. Can we please do so with some of the Xbox One threads that used Misquotes also? For the sake of more clarity.

I edit threads when I'm reading them and I have a chance to form a more nuanced interpretation of what's being discussed, but that doesn't guarantee I'll hit all of them. :p

Well maybe, but they did at least they changed their minds.

I am sure more info will get leaked in the coming days.

I just saw the entire thing and yeah he was just speculating. It will be nice if Sony does drop the DRM based on the negative feedback the X1 reveal got. But I also can't see one platform holder going with something massive like this while the other doesn't. There's just too many scenarios to consider here. I wouldn't get my hopes up, but if Sony does drop it they will gain a ton of goodwill.

I actually did caution that it was coming about a week ago. Because as of a week ago it was.

I just heard on friday that it wasn't. I didn't want to come right out and post about it because leak-y individuals like myself are getting a bit too much attention and I don't care about myself but Im not really looking to get my friends into trouble. But i've confirmed it with a second person so I got dumb and posted it.

Chubigans can vouch for me though on having been correct on other sony leaks in the past.

And chubigans should probably PM me again telling me to be quiet.

If This turns out to be true, Sony just won a Generation long Plus subscriber.

Unlike the rest of the board, I don't forget how Anti-consumer Sony can be too, but they never push further than they feel they can get away with.

If they have scrapped the Used games DRM I have to reward them with my support.
