Indie Games [June] Now Voting - Post 666

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
New tradition, top of the page screenshot of a game I am currently playing. Whoever grabs the first post will post a new screenshot of a game he liked, so that people entering the thread see something nice. That tradition worked nice in the Vita thread :p

Sentinel! Played it quite a bit now and got the medals on the first 6 levels. Challenging but definitely worth the $10.

It is worth it if you haven't touched the game since alpha 1. The features like being able to lay down go codes and strafing not being a major hassle made the concept of planing out out entire missions possible which was a big improvement from the first alpha which I just ended up winging it most of the time. With the most recent release they've made it so you can actural save your game which might just inspire me to dig into getting the high scores.

How can you strafe? Didnt find that option in the right click menu.

Additionally to the fact that every bump gives potential sales to the developers.

Heh. Didn't hit submit before I left earlier.

This is the most important part to me. It's especially why I'm grateful for your, among a couple others, tireless posting championing the indies. They have far less budget and, seemingly, fans, but the games they make are fantastic experiences you won't see elsewhere. Every bump might bring someone else to their new favorite game they never heard of before.

-EDIT- Whoa - No desire for double post and I think my reflexes won't be up to it, but Volgarr the Viking looks like a beautiful mix of 2 of my favorite Arcade games of my youth, Rastan and Black Tiger/Dragon. Thanks for the tip!

How can you strafe? Didnt find that option in the right click menu.

Once you have made a path for your dude, click and drag away from anywhere on that path using the right mouse button. This should bring up a green view triangle and lets you angle where you want your trooper man to look. The dude will reset back to his default looking forward position after a few secs if nothing catches his eye, so if you want him to strafe long distances you have to keep laying down the focus turn points.

Edit: Oh wow, just checked out those Sentinel screens and that game looks rather striking. I hope they get a demo out for it, interested in seeing how it plays.

Ah, thanks. Will try that later.

And although the game is super stylish, the real star of Sentinel is the music, but neither the trailer, nor screenshots (d'oh) showcase that properly and there isnt a good gameplay video anywhere yet. Tried to make a video earlier but I got too much lag when trying to capture the video. I'll make sure to give this thread a shoutout when the demo releases, though. The first few levels are already pretty good in regard to that.

We talk about anything Indie Game related in here, just the OP posts are recent/future specific.

Glad you want to post a bit more :) If you need some game suggestions, feel free to ask or check the average GAF rating in the program too:

I tried to run it this morning, but I got an error message in German and went on with my day. I'll try again later, and I'll add some impressions on games that I've played.

On the topic of technical issues, I'm trying to solve a weird text bug in Kentucky Route Zero (the bottom half of all the text is missing, like a black bar has been placed over it). If I can work it out, I'll probably finish act 1 tonight (shouldn't take too long according to howlongtobeat.com), so I'll be able to give impressions on act 2 next week and actually post about something relevant.

EDIT: Well would you look at that; I sent a tech support email to the developer, got a response 10 minutes later saying that they just fixed the bug this morning and hope to update this monday. Great!

Hope you are in for a challenge then. The game is great, but certainly not easy. But seriously, I cant stop playing it right now. Music integration is too good, and I really want to unlock the soundtrack download.

Actually, when I saw it, I thought to myself - this is something that Toma might like.

There seem to be some titles in the list that look interesting.

But are there any indie space (combat) simulators? Other than FTL: Faster Than Light anyway. Preferably 3d.

I cant think of any recently released ones, but you should keep an eye out for

Enemy Starfighter

and

Starlight Inception

Edit:
Actually, this is a recent one that offers Beta access on preorder, havent tried it yet though:

Hm, did you use the full installer? There are some german install instructions, but you only need to click "Ich stimme zu" or whatever I wrote in the description post. If you get a different error message, please send me a screenshot.

Here's what I did.

-Downloaded and installed the Microsoft Visual Basic Power Packs

-Downloaded and extracted the setup. When I try to run it, I get this error message: http://i.imgur.com/4GmVxHg.png

-Screenshot of the details: http://i.imgur.com/yu6kecJ.png

Also, the Thomas Was Alone OST makes for awesome background music when doing stuff, heh.

Welcome ;) Any of the Indie games from the last months that you enjoyed? If you havent read the older threads, make sure to check the top voted games each month at the beginning of the april, may and june threads.

Kentucky Route Zero! I've never played a point-and-click adventure game before KRZ, and I actually loved it a lot more than I expected to. I didn't think they could possibly be all that engaging, but KRZ turned me around on them completely.

I just tried out the alpha for Among the Sleep and it is terrifying. I haaaate playing horror games because I'm so jumpy and every noise scares me shitless. However, I think I'll end up giving the full game a go because I enjoyed the setup in the demo.

I finished Save the Date. Beware spoilers ahead, I don't recommend you reading after this point if you wanna to play the game:

I started playing the game thinking it was just another Visual Novel and choose the option to no go to the date after the Game Over and some giggles I started again and choose the Taco restaurant, then Felicia died by falling into the ocean, I thought it was just a joke for me choosing a wrong option, loaded a save choose other answers and she dies again, the third time I tried the same scene I noticed a new answer and the things started to go really meta.

It is interesting to notice that after she died of all the possible manners on the Taco restaurant, I still couldn't get the main message point of the game (for me at least) and I probably tried all the possible answers, and still couldn't accept that the game don't have a standard happy ending. I think the deaths starts to get really ridiculous to show you that her painful end is inevitable if you try to save her life.

Even the hacker end felt void, but still funny. So I selected the first option that choose when I started to play, to not go on date and for my surprise part of the dialogue changed, and this time I was pleased.

I could write more but I really need to sleep.

The game gets really meta at one point. Did you actually get to experience the aliens or went straight to the hackers ending?

KRZ was a fantastic experience. Unfortunately, it's still a bit expensive so that not many people got to enjoy it. Oh and someone said that episode 2 just released? I should probably include that in the next thread then.

It says that it can't install .net 4.5 framework on your system, I guess you are on an OS that is making issues with that :( What's the OS?

Oh, thanks! Will keep an eye on these.

Also, that gif of Enemy Starfighter... why does it remind me so much of Homeworld 2? That ship looks a lot like a Hiigaran ship.

Just bought Drifter, will post some impressions later.

With Gunpoint nearly upon us, just want to make everyone aware of this. If you think you will be interested in buying it once the reviews roll in then if possible can you please buy it from the developer website via the humble store and use the steam key provided rather then through steam directly. This has two benefits, firstly humble only take 5% commission rather then steams 30% and secondly you get a drm free copy of the game so if Cthulhu ever rises up and consumes the Valve offices (which we all know will happen eventually) then you still have access to a copy of the game.

This is also all true of many games, Rogue Legacy is on humble store and will be on steam, so if you are planning on buying a game on a service like Steam or GOG and want to give the developer an extra layer of support it is worth checking their website and seeing if they are on a service like the humble store so the transaction can end up being more profitable to both them and you.

I'll make sure to put that in the new Gunpoint thread tomorrow.

I think you mean WHEN Cthulhu rises, but I agree with everything else you've said. I always try to buy directly from the Developer's website if possible, especially if I can get the game on Steam/Desura as well (for convenience's sake). I purchased my copy yesterday from that same website and have activated it on Steam already, but it won't install/download until release, obvs.

On another note, I've been playing far too much of Door Kickers' free Lite version of Alpha 3. It seems like an updated SWAT 2 at this point and, hopefully, it adds enough gadgets to be on par with what SWAT 4 offered. Being able to pause to fine tune the movement/facing/actions is wonderful. I'm currently enjoying it more than Frozen Synapse and the game should only get better as more weapons/gadgets/tactics get added to the game.

Windows XP professional 5.1.

Yeah, just read up on it and apparently XP is not supported by .net 4.5
I'll look into changing back to .net 4.0 (which is XP compatible) and will let you know if I manage to reprogram it in 4.0

I'm out of the loop of indie games since a few months back. The games on the OP looks amazing.

Let us know if you need any recommendations based on other games or genres you like :)

Fragment - For a first person stealth action game, I can't get over the fact that I can't crouch. Like The Swapper, you can create clones but only a single one that you can switch to if you're in range. Not a good tutorial, I watched the trailer and had no idea you could move your clone. I came across a shielded spider and didn't know how to throw a bomb, was it Q or some other button? I still love the particle FX of blowing up dudes, and all the hand animations like when you recall with a click of your fingers.

iVqseidaRx82n.jpg

Icefishing V - I like painting the black obelisks with red by pressing E to emit, but I didn't know exactly what to do. Also, not getting the point of obscuring your screens with "hyperglitching" when sprinting, it makes the elevators come close or something? Doesn't help that my framerate goes really down for no reason since it's a very sparse game.

ixMMCG4FlCv04.gif

Homesick - 2D survival horror like the Clock Tower, the killer creeped me out because you move your flashlight across the room and then he'll pop out if you wait too long. The deaths are brutal. Didn't like that if you just go into the game, there's bad tutorialising where I had no idea you could switch from observing point-and-click style to the action button or that you could even sprint, need to check the options for all that. Still, its scares are pretty effective, and I'd like to give more time to it.

Thanks, and damn scary when you play it. There is not much rhyme or reason when he'll come, so I'm just in perpetual paranoia.

Yeah, thats the one thing that game does incredibly well. There are some rules to it though, but it takes a while to figure them out.

and a game that isn't mine I'm pretty excited for: TowerFall
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Es-okjDMAbI

THIS !

Game is GOOD !
Hialrious, awesome multiplayer and stupid fun !
The world needs more Smash bros style fun 4 player brawlers =D

But don't take my word for it ... take Penny Arcade Report's word

And TowerFall is an Ouya only release or will we get that on PC as well?

Ouya only for now, but the beta version i played was on PC, so I would not be surprised if it became multiplatform later ...specialy with Penny Arcade's quote
"Still, it's an OUYA exclusive, at least for a bit."

edit :
Also on the oficial site
"Launching first on the Ouya, June 25th!"

So does this unlock at midnight? I'm pretty much counting down the hours at the moment.

I dont know, but I'd guess a normal Steam update release, so in about 23 hours.

I just played through the demo of Gunpoint.

It can't get here soon enough.

If you are bored enough and want some times to break:

It's an interactive album, not a game. So yeah, you emit those beams at the colorless objects to wake them up, to put the whole elaborate sonic machinery into motion - this makes the elevator come down and you can proceed to the next track. And the hyperglitching makes a lot of sense in a context of the world you're in - fast-forwarding a music track would result in a similar effect.

As for framerate issues try lowering the Unity settings - there're lot of sounds simulations that may cause it to be resource heavy. That's my guess, maybe it's just unoptimized - the dev said it is his first game after all.

Ok, finished The Swapper. It's a great puzzle game, but paradoxically it could be its main weakness at the same time, depending on your expectations. Being constantly preoccupied with them, I couldn't fully appreciate other elements of the experience, like the interesting story, which I admit, I rushed through a little in puzzle frenzy mode, breath taking visuals or otherworldly atmosphere. But don't mind me - it's like whining you have to score goals in Football match - the core game is superb, so is attention to details and other stuff I mentioned.

Thanks for the context, I just loaded it up and was confused.

Is it promotion for an actual album or just the designer thought of making an interactive album and this is the only way to experience it? Like when Beck did his new album by just sending sheet notes.

Thanks Toma from putting our game in the future releases! :D

BTW, I suppose the ??? next to the title meant where the game is released no? You can add PC, Mac and Linux there, as that is where we definatly is going to be released.

We are trying to do a playable demo for release soon (we want to do it before the indigogo campaign is finished), so I will post it in this thread when its ready.

I don't think there's conventional album with those compositions, so it's an original work. Actually it's a first game in a bigger noise-based series, as I read on his site: http://v.icefishingmusic.com/.
