Square Enix announces Deus Ex: The Fall for iOS [Up: $7 price, Video Footage]

How's S-E track record regarding ports of their iOS games to Android? Because I'm not playing that on my 3GS for sure!

Besides the fact that the ports are often a bit sloppy on non-flagship devices (ie. devices that aren't a Nexus, Galaxy S, etc.) when they first release, pretty good. Everything S-E comes on Google Play nowadays, but we're unfortunately unlikely to know when, until literally the day it releases. :\

I guess I'm lost here. I know it's a bad analogy to compare video games to music or movies or something like that, but isn't it a good thing when something you like becomes available more easily and to more people? Any CD I buy will play in any player, so isn't it cool when things move in that direction?

Since we're making rough analogies, it's like an music artist releasing an EP of B-sides exclusively on iTunes when all his previous albums were on vinyl.

I wish they'd stop making teasers for phone games.

Worst part about it is that it doesnt look like it plays to the platfrom's strenghts at all. It just looks like an FPS, it needs buttons and sticks.

It won't be strange to see a representative of Square Enix present at Apple's Monday Event to talk about the (intense) relationship between them (and maybe to announce FF7 iOS Edition?)

But most people have access to iTunes and that might get him more exposure which will in turn increase demand. Maybe you'll get a vinyl record later that you wouldn't have gotten otherwise or maybe you'll just get more iTunes content and this thing you like will be enjoyed by more people.

Thanks to the sales of that widely accessible EP, the artist can afford to record another album on vinyl.

Sounds like everyone won.

What if it's... Good? Deus Ex doesn't strike me as the kind of game that absolutely cannot work with touch controls, and I thought The Missing Link had demonstrated that bite-size, standalone chapters of Deus Ex could work well.

Haha holy shit, I MSPainted that picture a long time ago. Had no idea it was still around and didn't just vanish into the mists of the internet.

Fuck, just watching him play makes me want to not even bother.

They could have at least come up with some different controls.

Haha, kudos! I know that feeling. I did a quick costume for a Bioshock contest on Destructoid YEARS ago. Needless to say I won, but that picture still appears online from time to time. Lol.

This would apply if ios games were playable on consoles too.

Looks like it was intended for something else and then crammed onto iOS in multiple parts. Would not be shocked if they eventually pull a revelaitons and port the full version to other DD services.

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
If they turned Deus Ex into a Frozen Synapse kind of thing I'd be pissing my pants with joy. Who wants a touchscreen stealth FPS though? Christ.
I agree that an iOS Deus Ex would be better served by many other different types of game, but it's clear that with a straight conversion Square Enix gets to re-use lots of assets and stick with a proven gameplay model rather than take a risk with something experimental. I don't like the approach, but I understand it.

Eidos loves trolling us. Remember that 8-bit fake Deus-Ex game that was "revealed" some time ago? The only positive from this is that the franchise is still alive. I can't see them investing in a mobile game if they don't intend to create another sequel. HR sold quite well, broke 2M+.

I conceded that the art analogy was a bad one. :) But as a consumer product, isn't it also good for the product when it's wanted by more people and so demand increases? Most games aren't available everywhere, but being available to less people doesn't seem like a sound strategy.

Bring it on.

iOS is the best gaming platform. Deus Ex: HR was good too.

only worry is that Square Enix have a fucking terrible pricing scheme for mobile, so this is probably going to be like 2 hours of gameplay or something ridiculous.

Graphically, the game looks impressive. And it retains the Deus Ex gameplay.

You'll get a proper sequel to Human Revolution, but maybe now isn't the time.

hell, I'd kill for a proper iOS port/remake of some kind of the original Deus Ex. It played like shit on PC anyways.

That's actually not usually true. Some products have a particular audience and trying to reach different audiences can mean changing the product to such a degree that your built in base no longer wants it. Then, if the new audience you're trying to reach doesn't bite, you're left with nothing. This is a pretty common phenomenon, especially in gaming. How many games have tried to tack on expensive MP that went nowhere? How many games have tried to become more "accessible" only to fail at capturing the vaunted casual markets?

That being said, there is no guarantee that this game will be along those lines. iOS gaming is maturing rapidly. Look at things like KOTOR, GTA and other ports to see what's capable on the devices. They can make this a respectable entry in the Deus Ex series. But there is just so much evidence on the other side of the equation. The platform is rife with shitty tie-in games, broken ports and IAP-collection plates that make any game suspect at first.

I don't blame people's trepidation. I do think it'd be great if people give it a chance though. iOS gaming is one major game away from legitimacy. It's not crazy to think that this may be that game.

Obviously console gamers want console developers making only AAA games for consoles, they see ios as a treat or a waste of time and money that could be used for console games.
For me a game could be even on toasters, just give me a console version too.

I can see it now. The future of Square's RPG's.

Type 0 timeline: Iphone>PSP>iOS

Yep.

I guess this has the subtitle "The Fall" for a reason.

Why? WHY? WHY????

I finished Deus EX: HR a couple of weeks ago, and I'm playing through the Missing Link right now, and I have to read this bs now, FUCK.

How ironic the game is entitled The Fall, when that's all I can think of with SquareEnix at this point. It's the worst kind of irony :(

LOL. Tomb Raider sold 3.6 million units in the first month and was a failure. You do the math.

I get what you're saying, but if someone suddenly makes a product that isn't to your tastes you can find a new one. If I'm a Big Mac fan and McDonald's changes the Big Mac to something I don't like, I can vote with my money and find something different. Doesn't it seem childish to curse out a company for going where the money is and entitled to expect them to cater to you (I mean the general you here)?

Obviously console gamers want console developers making only AAA games for consoles, they see ios as a treat or a waste of time and money that could be used for console games.
For me a game could be even on toasters, just give me a console version too.

But if you're already supporting a billion dollar company it seems odd to curse them as if they're a mom and pop outlet. I guess that's where I'm hung up. This isn't some mom and pop coffee shop, this is Starbucks, and it seems unrealistic to try to pretend they're the same thing.

That's not even the problem. From the video, The Fall seems to have the same mechanics as HR; for all we know, it might as good as The Missing Link in terms of scope and quality. It's not a matter of them offering something not to my tastes, it's a matter of the platform. Why *only* iOS, when there's already an installed base ready to buy for consoles and PC and not interested in putting up with worse controls? It seems like a terrible business decision.
