PS4 hardware design unveiled

USB ports on the front again?

Fucking hell. It looks ugly as fuck when you have USB shit sticking out of the front of a console. My silver PS3 is ruined by the USB cable from the PSEye sticking out it'll be he same for this one again. God damn it.

If you were wheel user or if you often stick USB memory stticks or HDD with movies and music or happen to be using USB extension cable for wired contoller or wired headphones, you would not complain.

I use all above and front USB are given.

Interesting that they moved away from the PS2 and 3's design of a larger enclosure sitting on top of a smaller base, sticking out over the right side. I have a PS2 and PS3 right next to each other upright, and I kind of like the uniformity of that.

I like it a lot. I think the Xbox One looks a fair bit better, but this is great, too. I'd agree that it's Sony's best home console yet... Though I think the PS3 slim might beat it by a little.

The Camera uses the AUX port at the back, actually.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
By far the best looking console this generation. Looks like the Slim PS2.

Funny how everyone in the E3 Sony thread kept saying it looked like shit etc and now it seems everyone loves it.

To me it looks great!

You need time to catch all the small details, see proper screenshots,etc. At the conference it looked like a deformed box.
Design is really good imo, it's pretty elegant, like a modern version of the PS2.

Kind of reminds me of a first generation CD player:

Next generation consoles are really going for that 1980's VCR look.

Looks good, PS2 vibe is present.

Yeah, it has some similarities to the Xbone but in a positive way - it looks sleek, but not chubby or huge.

Vertical standing is always a good feature. I'm pretty sure it'll look gorgeous in white color.

This system looks pretty sexy, but the back haha. These systems really need them vents, but more is better than overheating!

Basic thoughts here.

Yes, it looks like a slightly sleeker PS2, complete with blue highlights via an LED. Very slick looking, and it doesn't look like a VCR. It looks like there are a metric ton of vents on the back, which is also a good thing, since it should stay cool that way. Having no Power brick is a HUGE plus! Seriously, I cannot fathom how this thing can both be smaller than the X-Bone and have no power brick, despite having the beefier GPU.

Now, here are my concerns.

Mainly, I would like to know how I'm supposed to handle expanding my storage. Between installs and recording, that 500GB HDD could go fast. Is there an unscrew-able latch somewhere, where I can pull out and swap the HDD? If now I would presume they'd allow external HDD's, like with the X-Bone and WiiU, but if thats the case I'm really going to miss not having a USB port in the back. Don't get me wrong, for most tasks I'd prefer the USB's to be up front, but, if I ever need to hook up an external HDD, the wire leading around back will be an eye sore.

Other than that, this is a very solid design, and I'm quite pleased. So long as storage is properly addressed, I doubt I'll have any problems with this. :)

I really like the design of the console itself, looks like it could stand or lie in the livingroom while looking good, but the controller looks like a prototype to me. Will we just get used to it?

Strangely hideous from the top-down view (first picture in the OP), strangely attractive from the front (the divisive "slant"). I dig the slant, actually. This gen has been real boring on a hardware design level. Even Nintendo, after two generations of beautiful consoles with the GameCube & Wii, turned in a long, rounded Wii for their box. That was disappointing. I like that this one actually looks distinct, & pretty slick from the front (which is how you'll be viewing it).

What's funny is that, speaking of hardware design, the next-gen controllers are just the opposite. I think the Wii U & XBox One controllers are really aesthetically pleasing, but the PS4 controller comes off as a prototype or strange piece of a dev kit. Just looks unfinished & odd.

A lot of people will be surprised it's smaller than XB1. I kind of thought they might pull it off though.

Smaller, cheaper, more powerful :)

The whole curve thing? I guess that must be one of the internal vents, in the bit sandwiched together by the blocks. Interesting to see them ditch the curves altogether and go back to PS2 style straight lines.

This was my mockup cleand up by nib95. I was wrong about the 3rd layer, the rear slant and the disc slot location.

Yea dude, about as close as any human could get. You nailed the shape, my addition of the glossy area and blue light pretty much finished it. Only that grey third segment was amiss, and the line the light is coming from.

Great job dude.

Anyway, gorgeous looking console imo. Very slick and sophisticated.

Expected nicer, a lot better than Xbox One though, not that I really care what my consoles look like. Neither my 360 or PS3 look good either. Wii and PS2 are Nice looking consoles IMHO.

Its not just a little smaller, its significantly smaller. XBONE is 63% larger in size compared to PS4.

I'm a little worried PS4 is too small.

I like it. Similar to the Xbone with the two tone finish. But reminds me more of the second iteration of the PS2 slim. Glad it's more matte than glossy. I'm also glad it's fairly small compared to say the original PS3.

On the vertical standing photo, I was confused and thought the division between the gloss and the matte was angled, but after drawing some boxes in Paint.NET, I guess it's actually straight.

There was some weird kind of optical illusion going on in my head at least.

I'm not. As I've said from day one, on-chip Esram is a bad idea. I expect X1 to be the one that fails most often...again.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
They switched from USB mini to USB micro for the controller charging. Gross.
Micro is incredibly unreliable. (which is funny because testing supposedly said the opposite) I'm not looking forward to having to hold the charging cable at a certain angle the entire time in order for my controller to charge. (like my last four phones, although you can avoid it by buying a new cable every month or two)

Xrhombus One.

No! It's a parallelpiped or rhomboidal prism.

Square = 4 sides, all sides equal length, 90 degree interior angles.
3D = Square prism or cube.

Rectangle = 4 sides, opposite sides equal length, 90 degree interior angles.
3D = Rectangular prism.

Parallelogram = 4 sides, opposite sides equal length (and as a consequence, opposite angles equal measure).
3D = parallelpiped.

Rhombus = 4 sides, all sides equal length and as a consequence, opposite angles equal measure).
3D = Rhombic prism.

Rhomboid = 4 sides, opposite sides equal length (and as a consequence, opposite angles equal measure), but adjacent sides NOT same length and angles NOT 90 degrees. Basically, a parallelogram that is not a rectangle or a rhombus.
3D = Rhomboidal prism.

It's ugly as sin. Just about the only category Xbone wins at, just by being boring instead of truly ugly.
