Pikmin 3 Direct 2013.6.26 - 8 pm Japan Time (12 pm BST, 7 am EDT)

Asside from jaggies (that are taken care of by the DoF to some extend) and low polycount i think this game looks phenomenal.
So close.

Holy fuck at the water. And the shadows are glorious.

Game is looking amazing. And I still stand by the fact that the water is the most impressive aspect graphically. Very nice!

If I remember right it's always been that way. When my brother and I were younger we always found it odd how disproportionately good the water looked in the gamecube games compared to the otherwise basic and cartoony world.

Edit: And this is a day 1 wiiu purchase. Christmastime I guess....

Looks nice, I just wish they would ahve spent some time smoothing out the way things interact with the ground (environment). It's just...ROCK - GROUND. Sharp edges.

Not true. That was the case in the beginning. Now things like rock and grass are much more gradually fading into eachother.
But here are sill spots.

Well yeah, GC was code named Dolphin for a reason. It had, by far, the best water effects out of any console for its time. But there's something about the water here that even surpasses that (Obviously since it's on more powerful hardware, but I'm talking impressions for today's standards vs. impressions of generation 6's standards).

EDIT: BTW this is a summer release, so if you're getting it on Christmas it won't be day 1 anymore :(

The game looks nice. But why are they using gamecube level poly counts?
What does this mean and how do you guys know this? Really I can't tell.

Look at the screenshots on the previous page. Particularly look @ the rounded edges on the monsters. They are not rounded edges but a bunch of straight lines with sharp corners. Count the number of sharp corners. The number is low. It looks similar to the number in a lot of Gamecube games.

Online modes is not a consumer rights issue. Region free is.

...it is? How? In what way does a consumer have the "right" to play a piece of software released in another country on a piece of hardware not released in that country? I mean I understand why people WANT it, but there are zero rights being infringed upon here.

Though I guess I don't really want to derail the thread with that. Woo Pikmin!!!

Sorry, I meant "my personal first day of owning a wiiu." I made the post and then didn't care enough to edit for clarity.

Did they fix a lot of that?

I haven't seen too much new Media ( just the E3 NDirect and this, but I admit I wasn't really looking for it too much in either case).

Games looks incredible. I absolutely can't wait to own this. A gorgeous boxart too means it must be mine in physical form.

I'm not sure if this is new, but this video basically confirms you can play the challenge mode co-operatively:

Which is great news. Curious why they didn't mention this in the Direct. I wonder why a co-op campaign mode was never thought of. Perhaps the single player maps are larger and more detailed and it could only handle a single player?

Really wish the co-op modes are fun. This is the type of game I can get my girlfriend to play with me.

I wish the coop modes were also online.

I think we all do, but when I really think about the structure of the game I'm not so sure. It's like NintendoLand where the structure of the gameplay doesn't really lend itself well to an obvious online component. It's not like Smash Bros or Mario Kart where it's obvious how to implement it.

Pikmin is largely a single-player adventure series with short multiplayer modes.

I do wish it offered a co-op campaign and online, but these single-player-focused games are so few-and-far between these days I almost don't mind.

The game looks great. Looks to be another Nintendo gem. Love the music and presentation.

I'm all ready to play this game.

Check out my little setup, lol. I was going to make it look better but got lazy. Wasnt until a couple months later that I decided to add the gamepad stand.

I used an old cymbal stand so it can adjust in length and tilt up and down. From my perspective, it looks like the gamepad is floating in midair.

Really comfortable to have it float above you.

Its also resting on the charge cradle so it has maximum brightness and keeps charged.

that's brilliant

I.... I watched the 6 minute video in Japanese. Oh my goodness I want it even worse now. It looks like so much fun, with occasional emotional devastation.

The quality of the lighting, shadow and dof effects far outweigh any issues with poly count in my opinion. And tbh, how much difference will it make it terms of how the game plays? I would think pretty much none.

Are they going to release this video in English? It looks fantastic, probably the most aesthetically pleasing game I've seen this year. I also noticed you can direct characters by drawing out directions on the gamepad.

How is the time mechanic going to work in this?

Collect food fast enough to not starve to death.

I agree. But i'd like it. Especially online coop. For older gamers it's not that often that friends really have the time to game at their friends house. A lot of my friends live in different cities. But i like to play coop with them in games.

God i hate that this game is 30FPS. Hope we don't have to wait another 10 years to get Pikmin 4
Hopeit's a steady 30fps. I think that will be fine for a slow paced game like this.

Thank goodness I'm one of those who doesn't see the difference as long as the framerate is stable. Pikmin 2 didn't have any issues in that area. Cannot comment on Pikmin 1, that's coming in a few days :)

With that kind of reasoning games would still look like Super Mario 64.

Yo, someones body is ready, I guess... :D

It can extend out another foot or more since its a cymbal stand. I had it at its shortest for the image.

Kind of bummed to read this game isnt 60fps. Im counting on it to be a smooth and stable 30fps...

I read that there will be online leaderboards for this. So up goes the replay value.

Has it been confirmed 30fps? I just assumed from someone in this thread mentioning it.

Found a link to download a 60fps vid.

http://nintychronicle.wordpress.com/2013/04/20/60-fps-pikmin-3-trailer/

I haven't downloaded it to confirm.

edit:

I downloaded and watched the 60fps trailer. Unless theres some trick to upconvert to enhance the video to look 60 fps, and that tilmin is playing a sick joke, this games 60fps.

Unless things have changed, but this trailer was uploaded a couple months ago.

Looks like the visuals have been spruced up a bit. The start menu water looks better than it did during Pikmin 3's first reveal at E3.
