Would it be wise to quickly purchase some of the Atlus-published games that I missed out on over the past few years? Would this news even have an effect on their availability or is that an overreaction?

Goddamn that's a lot of money. Source?

Wall street Journal about 2-3 months ago. It was some Japanese stock business summary when they were talking about Gungho's HUGE runup in market cap, driven almost solely by P&D success. They quoted that figure in that article.

EDIT: Found the article online - the $4 million a day was during April, but there's no reason to think it's slowed much. 14 million users.

I found this while looking for sad Persona gifs. I felt it was mildly relevant and if nothing else will make people laugh during a dark time.

GungHo currently indeed is rolling in dough but I doubt they will be interested in funding development of SMT and related spinoff games the way they are right now. And Atlus franchises in general are too niche for a console dev. to acquire them. The outcome of this entire situation is looking bleak to me.

RIP Atlus. DDS 1 and 2 were the best games Atlus games I experienced. A great melancholic story and excellent leveling up system.

10% of the population of Japan has an account. Its crazy.

The game is not terrible for a phone game. I tried it just to try it because the $$$$ numbers are so crazy

Road to Dragons is buggier, but I think it may end up being a better game.

It doesnt matter because I highly doubt anything will change, but if it came to selling out I would want to see their IPs go piecemeal. The Sony-GAF circle jerk on the first couple pages was hilarious.

If Atlus goes under, can't they just reform everyone under a new name? Not ignoring the fact that it would cost a lot of money and planning, but isnt that an option? I also wonder what would become of their IPs (ownership) and Nintendo partnership as well. I hope the whole situation works out well somehow..

Because they are a horrible publisher when it comes to localizing games.

After 20+ years of localizing games, especially during the early 90's when a lot of JRPG publishers didn't even bother, and now after not localizing a handful of highly desired games, they're suddenly a horrible publisher when it comes to localizing games?

Not to mention that they were one of the first large JRPG publishers to get localizations down to a point of consistent quality thanks to the efforts of Richard Honeywood and other translators in the company...

Sorry, but I don't think it's fair to make that assessment until quite a few more years have passed with them skipping out on titles. Square Enix doesn't localize everything and them skipping over Type-0 and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is vexing. But I still don't think that merits overlooking their long history of mostly good localizations. Not at this point, anyway.

And no, I'm not advocating for Square Enix purchasing Atlus.

I hope Sony purchases Atlus, their titles have been aligned with Playstation for forever.

When someone like GungHo or Marvelous buys Atlus, someone really just needs to make a wall of shame for this topic. Shit has gotten into full stop crazy-town.

They've stumbled a lot in recent years, but before that they were really solid in terms of localizing games. They're saying all the right things since changing management, so I have hope that we won't really see them letting games fall through the cracks much anymore.

Best case is a hands off investor uninterested in interfering in game dev.

Bad case is a shit 3rd party that will screw around with th ip.

If it came down to first party stepping in I have to say Ninty is way more.likely, they have after all already invested in a in progress atlus project and will want to protect that investment. Getting the extra dev muscle and hardcore rpg fan bait to fill out their release schedule would be a plus. I'm sorry Persona people but the vast majority of Atlus's releases.are already Nintendo exclusive, less would change platform wise with Nintendo stepping in opposed to Sony, p5 was never going to be a ps4 game anyhow.

Best case would be Microsoft buying all this Index/Atlus stuff

You know why. Cuz I want to see GAF tears all over my lap.

This is the PR Manager of Atlus USA. About as official as anything I've seen from them yet.
Sounds like Dragon's Crown and SMT IV are still on track for release.

That's...good, I guess. That means that development hasn't been halted, right?

EDIT: Referring to the above Twitter screencap

Here's the statement from Atlus USA to Kotaku

Currently, Index Digital Media, Inc. and the ATLUS brand are unaffected by the Index Corporation proceedings in Japan. We’re carrying on day-to-day activities, business as usual. Shin Megami Tensei IV and Dragon’s Crown are still releasing on July 16 and August 6 respectively, and we’re licensing and publishing third-party titles such as R.I.P.D: The Game and Daylight. We want to thank all of our fans for their outpouring of support.

As long as it's not Square Enix, I'm fine with that....

Or Capcom. Or Konami.

...

Namco Bandai? Tecmo Koei? Are those really the only options? Those are the only companies I'd trust to let Atlus keep their Japan-focused identity, but they are hardly in good positions to make acquisitions.

Marvellous AQL, NIS, Idea Factory/ Compile Heart or GungHo would all be possibilities as well.

GungHo really seems like the best option. They seem to be a cleanly run company and they have enough money that no one would really have to worry about the future of Atlus. Plus it would mean that Atlus would stay third party.
