Still better then being shuttered or bought by one of the console manufacturers.
Agreed. I don't even understand why people would want Sony or Nintendo to buy the company outside of the desire to just shove it in others faces with "haha exclusive now!" Them being bought by either one would do gamers no good. Best case scenario is a company that just leaves them alone to make whatever games on whatever platforms they chose. So basically maybe a company similar to what Index was or, after reading a bit, GungHo wouldn't be bad either.

Even if you're not a console warrior, I could understand selfish reasons for wanting Sony/Ninty to buy them up. IE you save money by not nessecarily having to buy the other console.

I think Kadokawa would be interested in Atlus or at least the SMT/Persona IP. They are a fairly large media company with a lot of Anime/Manga/Magazine publications, as well as some games.

Kadokawa is the parent company of Enterbrain (Weekly Famitsu, etc.); there has been a lot of cross-promotion between Enterbrain and Atlus (almost all of the recent Atlus titles had those Famitsu Special Editions that are $150 on play-asia, a lot of coverage in Famitsu, etc.).

They also used to own Grasshopper (before it was snatched up by Gung Ho, interestingly) and maybe they would be interested in filling that gap in their portfolio with some of Altus' games?

Kadokawa strikes me as a company that is very interested in the whole cross-media thing, so "Persona-the RPG- the Fighting Game - the Anime - the Movie- the Play" would be quite the fit.

Everyone wins if MS buys them.

No more buying Sony and Nintendo systems.

GungHo really seems like the best option. They seem to be a cleanly run company and they have enough money that no one would really have to worry about the future of Atlus. Plus it would mean that Atlus would stay third party.
I think this is one of the best options. Atlus should stay 3rd party since they've had a good mix of games for all systems. Even though I own all of them, I think it's for the best if they can stay 3rd party so certain games can be multiplatform, allowing more people to play them.

Very interesting point, I was thinking about Kadokawa or 5pb as interesting options since SMT and Persona would have plenty of multimedia opportunities outside of games which would be right up their ally.

Not to mention flush with cash. The Japanese version of Puzzle and Dragons makes 4 million dollars A DAY.

That's what worries me about GungHo buying them though.

Would we see Persona/EO/SMT get turned from regular dungeon crawlers into something like PAD?

PAD is like a very casual version of those games (well, not EO). But you explore dungeons (sorta) and recruit monsters and build them up, like you do with Personas.

Not that I think they will add the match-3 mechanics, but they could easily add the monetization model to those other games

I am in the Microsoft ball park here, I think strategically they should probably invest in parts if not al of them just to start building up Japanese IPs and interest for the Xbox One.

Say they buy them. Get it done quickly then port whatever they where working onto the Xbox One for Japanese launch.

Gung Ho has purchased Acquire and Grasshopper and so far has let them continue as normal.

Sony, buy them and get dat Persona 5 exclusive to PS4 and Vita!!! ;)

Thats probably already going to happen with the PS4 and Persona without Sony needing to buy them. Why would you want others to miss out on franchises you dont give a shit about, like Etrian Odyssey or Devil Survivor?

Square Enix should buy Atlus and their IPs. Then they can change their name to S.Q.U.A.R.E.. I just preordered Shin Megami Tensei IV. I want to make sure I get it, since it'll probably be the last real Shin Megami Tensei game.

And how well did that work out for Microsoft trying to enter Japan last gen when they moneyhatted exclusive content from much larger Japanese 3rd parties? How well did that work out for the popularity of the games they got from the deal?

Money hatting is different to protentionally buying a studio and strong IPs.

Surely it would be met with a better response.

I'm not a buyer of the Persona games and Radiant Historias of the world, but as an EO person who bought 1-3 and skipped 4, I can deal with the high probability that the series is either finished or will become too easy to enjoy.

I'll believe EO Untold in the US when I see it.

So we're down to...SMT4, CoH (which are easier), Demon Gaze (which I've heard was on the easy side), and Elminage?

All possibly of course on some of them.

I'm skeptical that the same Microsoft who let studios like Bungie, Bioware and Bizarre go, and tend to let million-selling IP like PGR and Viva Pinata sit unused for years, would suddenly jump at the chance to buy a notoriously small and niche development studio and an IP stable which includes a couple franchises that sell around 500K and most that sell under 100K. When I read threads like this, or people saying "OMG Persona 5 at Sony E3 conference plz!", I get it, I love alot of Atlus games too, but let's be realistic about the totality of the company and it's actual importance in the grand scheme of things. There's a reason why the push from Microsoft and Sony in exclusive content is first dibs in DLC and reveals from Activision titles and not niche JRPGs.

C'mon Nintendo. We already have SMTxFE, let's make some new Trauma Center games and lock down Persona 5 as a Wii U exclusive.
Haha, I doubt that. I wouldn't mind it though. I have strategically made it so I own every platform Atlus cares about. That means PS3, Vita, Wii U, and 3DS. There is no way i will be able to miss P5.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
So atlus USA is currently not affected for those concerned

Oh, yay. So I can buy Big Tits McGee and Buff Manly Dudes That I Have No Interest In and...? Nothing else on the system from them on the horizon. Yay?

Everyone meanwhile should buy P4: The Golden off PSN in case Atlus US does go down with the ship to future proof your download.

Well, Nintendo's been doing more and more to win themselves over to the hardcore crowd with stuff like snatching up Bayonetta 2 or all the support they've been giving to smaller developers, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a move like this. Especially if there's a big enough movement on Miiverse for it, and people have already taken to it. Nintendo listens to Miiverse surprisingly often when it comes to big decisions like this.

I don't give a damn about Persona 4, but I just preordered a copy of Shin Megami Tensei IV for that very reason.

You really don't want Nintendo to buy Atlus. They ruined Monolithsoft when they bought them. The same would happen to Atlus.

What's with everyone thinking Compile Hearts / Idea Factory are such bad choices? They seem to be all about doing whatever they want, so they would probably let Atlus do whatever they wanted to. I don't see them being worse than Index at the very least.

Maybe 'cuz the games from Compile Hearts and Idea Factory are terrible?

IMHO Bayonetta 2 wasn't just about what hardcore gamers wanted even if Nintendo saw that as a benefit of it (which they did, there was an interview about that).

For me the hidden story was that Nintendo probably wanted some of the top people at Platinum to be motivated to make a really great game, and a sequel to Bayonetta 2 probably got a lot of people excited to go above and beyond and deliver something great.

This ended up being a great way for Nintendo to maintain a relationship with Platinum, without having to micro manage their projects, and adding another solid game to their portfolio of exclusives
