Illusion of consumer rights? I guess?

I don't think there's any illusion.

The only reason there's such a significant conceptual disparity between the ownership of physical and electronic goods is the current roadblocks to consumer manufacturing of the former. Imagine when decent quality 3d printers become standard and you can trivially produce physical goods from your house. You'll be in the same 'quagmire' of what can and cannot be sold. Essentially the only reason we take selling physical goods for granted is because of the difficulty of replication for consumers.

When you purchase a game you own a game. Being prohibited (even if that means no enabling means) from selling something you own by a private company is fairly absurd.

but if everyone has a 3d printer then no one will ever buy hammers again.

there's a difference between a creative product such as a game and a mass-produced hammer. we can't "replicate" a game on our own free will. that right is given to the suppliers only, due to IP and copyright laws. that's why piracy is illegal

a hammer doesn't come with a EULA. plus, a hammer made in a 3d printer BECOMES a physical product. A digital game never becomes a physical product.

I don't know why but I seem to have no trouble understanding CBoat.
On the whole resale of digital content I am sure that each game can be digitally encoded with a serial number to keep track of it as I am sure there are different tax laws surrounding second hand goods.
They could make a more of profit that way, because production cost would have been taken into account in the original sale so on paper the only cost involved in the second hand copy is what was credited to the consumer. This type of sale would effect profit margins in a positive way, on paper at least.

What I read from CBOAT's post is that he isn't 100% sure of the X1 release date. That's why he gave us some info he has confirmed (CS reps calls). The date must be kept very secret by high-rank execs or isn't decided yet.

The digital market thing seems to be happening not only in the Microsoft camp. Why would CBOAT say that he wished he'd talked to Sony people? I don't think this part is related to his apologies for messing things up. I guess it might be Gamestop or another company (or a branch company of Gamestop? I noticed how Wario64 corraborated with the survey ;) preparing the platform. Of course they need cooperation from Microsoft (and probably Sony), this thing has to go into their networks but it doesn't have to be there at launch. An update of firmware and their servers will do the thing.

Am I interested? Yes. Is it a megaton for me? No, just a nice info. If that marketplace is managed centrally and not an auction site, the sale prices will probably be quite low. But, on the other hand, I usually don't replay games I finished so some extra funds for next games would be great. And I expect it to be a general trend in the digital goods business. We had similar rumours from Valve (well, you can sell some stupid card pictures on Steam, I even made a couple of Euros from that) and Amazon. I hope it to be an industry-wide.

For the following questions please assume that Microsoft Xbox One will offer a digital marketplace where you can purchase and sell digital video games.

New digital marketplace where you can purchase and sell digital video games:
-This will be available through the systems’ premium subscription service (such as Xbox Live Gold/Playstation Plus)
-You will have the ability to purchase and sell pre-owned digital video games.
-You will have the ability to sell back/trade in your versions of digital games you have purchased.
-You will have the ability to buy pre-owned digital versions of games through the online marketplace.
-You will have a variety of prices and features available to purchase for pre-owned digital versions of games.
-All transactions will take place via digital downloads/transfers within your next generation gaming system’s digital store.
-New full game digital downloads will still be available, as will physical (disc) versions sold at retail stores/websites.
-Pre-owned disc versions of games will be able to be played on the next generation gaming system for free.
-There will be a marketplace service fee charged to the seller when they sell a digital version of a game.

I'm struggling to understand this. Can someone translate it into buttocks?

i dont know what the point of reselling digital games is. why dont they just freakin lower the initial price?

A large part of the consumer market is comfortable with and likes the resalable aspect of games.

Serving large parts of a customer market is kind of an important thing for a company that wants to sell products to them.

It doesn't really matter what the point is when you break it down. It's a matter of trying to convince people to buy your product. Microsoft learned the hard way that taking this ability caused a giant uproar when attached to physical media. It's likely that they're looking at sales disparities between physical and digital games on Xbox 360, and are putting feelers out to see if doing the opposite and adding this functionality to digital purchases will please customers and thus lead to more potential sales.

As for why a person would buy the new version rather than the used one, for starters, there's presumably only one used copy for every new one if they're actually swapping codes in their database. In addition, I imagine "new" versions will also come with value-adds to make them more appealing. They could even continue to increase the value adds over time to increase the appeal of the new versions as the market gets saturated with used copies. We already see this in the retail world, where "Game of the Year" editions of games come out much later, but include all the DLC for free, as an example.

MEGATON!

CBoat delivers yet again. Well done my friend.

So digital reselling is a thing now. This could be huge for MS. And physical reselling remains the same. Very, very nice. I am soooo looking forward to this feature if it ever happens.

Digital marketplace looks interesting.

However, I'm very glad I'm not the poor schmuck required to licence music contained within games for that use. The labels going to freak out bad, son.

I thought this thread was going to be about a new Battlestar Galactica game until I saw the thread creators name.

So this digital marketplace is an online survey thing? Kinda seems like it especially since they mention both XBL and PS+ in the title. Both of them should implement this if they wish to promote digital purchases although I'm still having a problem figuring out the value of digital "used" game?

Still on #TEAMCBOAT

This is not an exclusive feature... I strongly expect Sony to set a similar system in a near future.

Nah it is related to his getting to release date wrong for Sony PS4. He's saying he wished he talked to a customer service rep on the Sony side so he could have been able to rule out a date like one in October, as he has now been able to rule out any date prior to November 15th due to customer service reps being called in then for Microsoft.

CBoat has spoken, now spread the word, my friends.

Kidding aside, it's great to hear CBoat post again. He has been correct every time he posted so let's see what he says this time is correct again.

I think he's been wrong a few times but the times he's correct vastly outweighs it.

* Can sell to someone on your friendlist only one time only for a fixed price set by the publishers.

With 1000 friends i can already see big communities forming around that feature :p
Better have $5 go to microsoft/sony and publisher then $10 to gamestop
