SEGA Sammy acquires Index (Atlus) for 14 billion yen, now a subsidiary of Sega

Sonic as recruitable demon in SMT5 confirmed.

Valkyrie Chronicles was one of the best games of this gen, so I don't know...maybe they'll just let Atlus/Index do its thing. If this means they'll bring the SMT and Persona series to iOS with English localization, I'm okay with that. I wanna believe...

Sega(and by association Sega-Sammy) is such a shit company right now, they are either doing smartphone shit or PC shit I don't care about.
...

Er, what? They've done plenty of console/handheld games too. And their efforts on PC has been pretty great lately (PSO2 localization aside) whether you care about it or not.

I still maintain Gungho would've been a good choice, but overall, yeah, Sega was relatively near the top of the list.

That's about where I was at. Gungho would have been most likely to let Atlus work independently, which is great. There's definitely some risk to what Sega might do, but it's nowhere near as great as people in this thread think or what someone like god forbid Square Enix might pull.

I'd really like to be as optimistic as some of the posters in here, but it's just hard sometimes. Really hope the development side remains relatively untouched and Atlus USA isn't dissolved.

Thank goodness it wasn't Nintendo, then we all would have been screwed. At least Sega tries to release games on multiple platforms, because It'll would a sad day to see Persona exclusively on a Nintendo console.

What ips do they have that matter again?

Shin Megami
Persona
Etrian Odyssey
Trauma Center
Ogre Battle

The latter two are retired anyhow. Anything else?

Smt 1 and 2 already are!

So it's a deal with SEGA and not SEGA Sammy.

I don't think y'all are really thinking about this in a way that makes sense.

The only actual organization here is Sega Sammy, the holding company that was formed after Sammy's acquisition of Sega. Everything underneath is divided into units with the external brands "Sammy" and "Sega," but practically speaking these are components of the holding company. There isn't really any meaningful concept of this being a deal "with Sega" vs. "with Sega Sammy." The money's coming from the same place and the deal is being approved by the corporate leadership either way, and Atlus will be folded into what's considered the "Sega" portion of the business no matter what, since that's how external developers acquired by Sega Sammy are integrated into the organization.

Was really hoping for GungHo, status quo would've been relatively kept.

Sega's history with publishing their own games is horrible, but we still don't know how this will be set-up.

Well, I guess five or six months after the US is "fixed" compared to "a year, year and a half later, if you get it at all."
This is unfair, NISA wasn't directly involved, they were pretty fast with EO4 and Soul Hackers once they had the premission to work with it. Their first real test was yet to come.

My stance on it is that in cases of SEGA acquiring other companies, they have worked with them as opposed to buckling them down like some here seem to be under the impression of. Platinum Games, Relic, etc.

I thought this outcome was coming as SEGA already published Atlus games in Japan, and happen to have a lot of money and a thing for quirky niche titles, so not entirely too surprising.

I guess I should of seen the response coming though. Too many people are stuck on mid-2000s SEGA output and despite drastically improving their output and efforts in the last 6 years, too many people stick to their pre-established opinions on things. As Atlus already has a translation division and SEGA in every other acquisition has worked with the company to take advantage of strengths and ideals, I think too many are jumping the gun on this.

Really worried about future Atlus games in the west. I hoped anybody but sega bought them, let's hope for the best...

I'm not that worried. They do have Atlus USA, who localizes several things, and Sega isn't that stupid.

Also they're not going to spend $140mil and just sit on the library, they're going to port out some stuff to make some of that money back.

SEGA is also fairly PC-friendly, so thinking we're going to see some stuff make PC- I just hope it's stuff I want.

Yeah I'm mad there's no VF PC, but that wasn't going to make money.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

With Phantasy Star Online 2 being in the position it currently is, as well as the Yakuza situation, to say Atlus fans have no reason to worry is silly.

Again, this is why I'm waiting to see what becomes of Atlus USA before I start worrying. If they go as part of the restructuring because Sega Sammy doesn't think they need yet another localization branch, we in trouble.

I'll wait and see what happens, whether we get another announcement for games in the US...or if there is any paint dabbling in the titles a few years down the road...or if Atlus USA gets shut down.

Either way, I suspect EO will be a thing of the past but I am willing to see what happens.

Since there is nothing we can do about this, I'm going to try be a bit positive and hope Sega treat and assist Atlus right.

Really, really hope Sega treat Atlus USA right.

But those are pure SEGA brands. Platinum Games titles never sold well but every one was translated since Platinum had their own translation branch, is partially what I'm saying.

Atlus games have also had a rise in Western Markets more recently, especially in it's successes in the Persona IP and Catherine, coupled with what typically happens in the past. And while there's definitely some localization issues with SEGA (though better than some other companies, like the mentioned Nintendo), it is also true SEGA takes more risks than many other companies, especially on niches. Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles unfortunately didn't too well in the West, and while I hope SEGA changes their decision, the sales numbers didn't speak too well on the titles.

Sammy officially denying the Nikkei report about the Index Holdings purchase:

They aren't denying, they state they've made 'No announcement.' Be interesting if not true though.

The SMT series has proven popular and profitable enough in the west to justify nearly every release of its games in the past decade. How would being owned by Sega Sammy change that?

Are you sure? by 当社グループが発表したものではありません i'm understanding that they don't have any relation with the announcement.

Yes, they have no relation with the announcement as they've made no announcement. However, they also don't deny they've acquired Atlus, they just say they've made no announcement.

The statement says that the news out there about their subsidiary Sega acquiring Index is not an official announcement from the group. But the statement itself is weird because it is not a direct denial, and it specifies reports saying that Sega acquired Index, when the majority of the news reports clearly says Sega Sammy won the bid to take over the business.

Sounds to me like Index is not going to be under Sega, but could be a part of the Sega Sammy group directly, which would be interesting.
