What the fuck.
You bought them but haven't opened them?
You're aware that the Galaxy games are literally the highest rated games of all time, right?

Also, you can ride Yoshi in SMS.

Why play games when you can surf the thread of a game you probably wont buy amirite? lol

Dude, you think IGN is bad. Have you ever seen Jeux France play a Mario game?

Prepare yourself:

My God.

On a serious note, how do you catch the "bag/treasure" creature that leaves its footprints behind?
If you stay still a few seconds he'll come out of the sand. I tried hitting it with starbits once but they never worked and chasing him was worthless so I never tried again. What does it do? What is he carrying? lol

You spin next to him, just that. That will knock him out and you can kick him. He carries tons of star bits.

I disagree. Mario Sunshine was a by-the-numbers facelift to Mario 64 throwing in a waterpack and un-rideable Yoshi. It was also by far the most unpolished Mario game, 2D or 3D, ever. Hell, Sunshine is the reason why I never even opened SMG or SMG2 from their boxes and probably won't get 3D World. It was that disappointing.

I agree 100 percent with your opinion of sunshine, but man you're really missing out by not playing the galaxy games. They're the closest I've been to rekindling the feeling I got playing Mario 64 and ocarina as a kid. Phenomenal creative and FUN games. Their greatness is one of the big reasons that my hype for 3d world isn't that high despite the great trailer

It was risky for a Mario game stop trying to sound smart/snarky it was very different especially for the underperforming GameCube

No its not, its only different in this fantasy land where Mario Sunshine exists in a bubble.
It made similar moves as its contemporaries with a hover move to ease the platforming, some kind of shootable weapon to help with the combat/add to the puzzle solving, and an increased emphasis on cutscenes. The core of the game follows the Mario 64 formula rather closely. If thats all it takes, then Banjo Kazooie was a risky game.

I do not understand how the moves Sunshine made were seen as risky, but 3D World is seen as safe. They're both in remarkably similar positions as they expand on an established formula and add some wrinkles into it. Id argue the multiplayer addition to a 3D platformer is a much bigger move than what Sunshine did, but Im sure detractors will counter with "But a 2D Platformer already did it!" or "It doesnt count because I dont like it!" which are both nonsensical.

I take it this game isn't getting the Galaxy treatment as far as the soundtrack is concerned? Would fit in with the low budget vibe given off with first party games so far.

It's getting a big band soundtrack. Nothing low-budget-vibey about that. Sweeping orchestras is reserved for space adventures.

The fact that you actually own SMG 1 and 2 and haven't opened either is mind boggling.

They are among the highest rated games of all time and have universal praise among the press and Mario fans. Sunshine might have carved a niche for itself with little groups of fans here and there, but it's still widely considered the worst (or at least, most controversial) of the 3D Mario games. I have always enjoyed Sunshine but I admit that I have never actually reached 120 Shines. In recent years I've tried but I've been fed up with the fact that half the game is filler.

However, I have completed SMG, SMG2 and 3D Land 100%. Completely worth it. Those games are excellent.

You need to do yourself a favor and play Galaxy. Or, even skip it and play Galaxy 2 since order doesn't really matter. Your distaste for Sunshine shouldn't stop you from at least attempting to enjoy the successor titles which are much improved in nearly every way.

One thing I've noticed after playing NSMBU, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Super Mario 3D Land this year, is that these games keep you moving and keep you jumping, and are densely packed with obstacles, traps, and dangers. Sometimes when I go back to slower paced games I have a tense feeling of "When is something going to happen!?!" I may even have a latent desire for action games in me.

True FLUDD keeps you at a set height as you hover, but I was thinking more hour it's like a platforming aid. And the cape was never in 3D Mario, right?

Sunshine was risky as in you spent the game cleaning goop, and allocated the system's resources to making the goop cleaning as impressive as they could.

So you had a weird, ugly Mario game whose premise is something people didn't really want in a Mario game.

But... Clean is better than dirty. And dirt is meaner than clean...

Sunshine is the only game I can't get into, I've tried at least five times. I LOVE Mario games but Sunshine doesn't do it for me. Galaxy 1 & 2 though.....oh man!

Earlier in this thread, we were discussing Koizumi and Aonuma switching places, right? The former goes back to Zelda, and the latter tries his hand at a Super Mario Bros. game. Well, I stumbled upon this exchange in an Iwata Asks:

Koizumi: Aonuma-san, wanna switch with me on Super Mario Bros. sometime?

Aonuma: Hey, that sounds good… Not!

Koizumi: I'll make the next Zelda game. Then you can enjoy playing it.

Aonuma: No way. (firmly)

Everyone: (laughs)

I found it amazing to see this even playfully discussed.

That quote was part of those discussions. It always is.

Btw, I don't think anyone wants or even entertains the idea of Aonuma making a Mario game. People just want Koizumi to direct Zelda again. Which he probably wouldn't do anyway since he's a producer now, like Aonuma.

Played all the levels in the demo and loved every moment; need this game so badly : )

Dunno if I was just crap or things were too hectic, but I couldn't figure out how to beat the boss; luckily one of the players knew what to do.

Also loved how the proper long jump is back; it was in 3D Land but didn't seem to offer more distance than a regular jump. I happily used it in 4-2 to get ahead of the other players...

Is it? I've never seen that exchange brought up before. I didn't see it coming at all. So awesome.

Personally speaking I had more fun with Sunshine than either of the Galaxy games, which to me were a bit too linear and going through the motions. Again, that's my personal preference. I value fun and simulation over continuity or what a Mario game should be.

What's funny is that I'm the opposite. I could pop in Sunshine anytime, but I just can't get into Galaxy. I beat the first one and got through a fair portion of the second, but I never really had the feeling that I was playing something amazing.

I find it funny you say that, since many people who prefer 64/Sunshine over the Galaxies actually invoke "what a 3D Mario game should be."

Played parts of the demo today, the game played really well and the car power up is fresh. Still dont understand why they was a distracting border around the screen though.

The blue border? It's an indicator for when someone's falling behind, so you can either take it as a sign to slow down to let people catch up, or to speed up and let them die if you're playing to win...although from the videos it looked like you have a shared life counter so keep that in mind too.

While I respect your preference, I think it's amusing you say you "value fun", therefore you prefer Sunshine, whereas I am quite certain most people would deem Galaxy a whole lot more fun than Sunshine. Sounds like you just find boring gameplay fun!
I'm kidding

I like sunshine a lot, but Galaxy is just leaps and bounds better. The flood mechanic was very love hate and some of the best levels in sunshine are the ones where they take flood away from you.

I played this over the weekend at NYCC.

This is a really great game. I'm just sort of bummed that I probably won't get to take advantage of the multi-player once it actually launches.

Lol, I bought a Wii U just because of this trailer. I have been very critical of the Wii U up until recently. Wind Waker HD and Mario 3D World really pushed me to buy into the Wii U.

Thankfully, I am still able to resist because I don't have time to play and I still have many issues with the console itself.
