RUMOUR: Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts is 720p, PS4 version is 1080p?

I think it's very telling that, during the reveal of the new consoles, people were starting to question the possibility of 4K games out of them. Someone at Sony (I forget who, and I'm paraphrasing here) said something to the effect of, whoa whoa whoa, while the PS4 will output a 4K image to a television and might have some theatrical 4K content down the road, games aren't going to be rendered in 4K. That's just way too much for our machine to push. Not gonna happen.

And then you have Major Nelson spouting stuff about the XB1's HDMI cable being rated at 4K, you know, "for the future!".

I think what everyone has to realize with COD is that it's basically Madden now.

You're not going to see mind blowing graphics from that series ever again, because since it's a yearly release, they HAVE to reuse assets. It's really just not even comparable to something like shadow fall, which has been in development for a few years.

You're only going to see random new "features" like the hit stick. This year, it's dogs.

I don't think anyone is saying COD:Ghosts looks good at all. haha

And that makes 720p Xbox One version even more baffling.

but the fish have an AI ( and the dog too ) ...no seriously
if the thing above is a next-gen console screenshot it's really embarassing to not have proper textures ( the xbox one can do better than that for sure ) or proper lightning.

Maybe this isn't the right thread for it, but I'm constantly baffled by how much of a clusterfuck the Xbox One is. What was MS thinking? What made them think they could sell an overpriced, underpowered gaming console that charges a subscription for all additional functionality, most of which can be found for free on devices that cost 1/5th of the price? How does this look good on paper? How does this happen?

How?

You won't miss gears, even without an Xbox One is my prediction.

That's for damn sure. I knew Judgment was going to be the downfall of the franchise when I saw the changes PCF were making and sure enough it flopped.

Gears is all but dead now and I've been on the hunt for a 3rd person action shooter with co-op (favorite genre) to fill that Gears void...and then The Order gets announced and happens to be exclusive to the PS4 that I was planning on getting. Hopefully it turns out well because right now it's giving me the same hype vibes that Gears did.

And this is their biggest issues. They can't get 1080 on a game that is clearly cross gen by how terrible the textures look along.

I wonder if IW had to scale back updating textures for the next gen ports if it took time getting the games running on the new consoles (mainly the Xbox One based on what we know at this point).

That Gif just sold me the game.

Here's the thing about the less powerful consoles usually winning the console wars: they're also usually cheaper because of the less powerful architecture. It is the opposite right now.
This is true. A combination of affordable hardware and appealing software has yet to fail.

That being said, I really think resolution is not nearly as important for the mass market. I see PS4 winning of course, but I don't see the XB1 going extinct. I say this as someone who has never bought a MS console and won't start now (nothing against MS, I just think it's redundant to buy both systems).

And even i am moderately surprised
My bet is they are going to be willing to spend whatever it takes to be the market leader in this segment because the stakes are higher than ever and the value of the piece of pie they are after will potentially return more than ever before (because now we're talking *real* revenue from services on top of game

they could do this "spend whatever it takes" -right now- before launch and price match the PS4. But they haven't....

The most disappointing part of all this is that in Redmond I bet they're already saying 'Well we tried to save the Xbox division by cramming adverts into everything, cheaping out on components and cutting first-party spending, but nothing worked. We literally tried everything and there's nothing else we can do, maybe it's time to think about shuttering the division?'.

Well, you know, sooner rather than later all our games are going to be running on a server somewhere and get streamed to us over video thereby allowing huge gains in processing and simultaneously eliminating piracy. Just sayin'

Popular theory and rumor points to the Xbox division having a lot of hands from outside their group meddling with the development of XB1. Microsoft is really thrashing in the water right now, looking for some wins and what direction to take in their time of transition. XB1 is just a victim of that it looks like.

The problem with folks around here is that you guys think everyone is like you. If everyone was like you, Wii would not have sold 100 mil+ and dominated the 1st half of last generation.

If everyone was like you, Wii's 480i/p res would have mattered... the PC would be the lead and dominant platform for every single 3rd party game, including EA's sports titles... Call of Duty would not be the #1 seller... Just Dance, Skylanders, Mario Kart, 3DS, etc. would not have dominated the charts.

Some multiplatform games will be 720p/720p on xb1/ps4, some will be 720p/900p, some 720p/1080p, 900p/1080p, and a bunch 1080p/1080p. Will it matter? To the hardcore, sure. To the soccer moms, to the kiddies, to the dude bros... not a chance.

It's not a question of power or specs or fanboy wetdream wars. It's a function of simply how many resources Microsoft is willing to invest to get to 30%, 40%, 50% or whatever market share their ultimate goal is. My bet is they are going to be willing to spend whatever it takes to be the market leader in this segment because the stakes are higher than ever and the value of the piece of pie they are after will potentially return more than ever before (because now we're talking *real* revenue from services on top of games... we're talking a digital pie that includes the itunes, the hulus, the netflix's, the digital games and apps downloads, etc., and more things in the future like ipTV, phone/skype dominance, etc.).

They will money hat as many exclusives as necessary... they will open as many studios as necessary.. .they will bundle and price drop as much as necessary... they will break as many fanboy hearts as necessary to beat Sony and, by relation, you the Sony holdout dreamer. Your salty tears and hate will simply fuel their fire. You will try to vote with your wallets and your voice, but your wallets/voice will get trampled by the XB1 gravy train laden with the soccer mom's and dudebro's hooing and hawing their way to a connected, metro-interfaced future.

You will lose. In fact, you have already lost.

I....I...I can't what is this can I even -

I think a generation of 720p/1080p multi platform splits would be absolutely catastrophic for ms. And yes I think people will tell and care.

Don't know if that's the takeaway here though.

Agreed. Something like that would make an already tough fight even more difficult for sure.

Instead of making fun of your fanboy post I want to ask you a couple questions.

1) As a gamer why do I care if the xb1 targets the casual and soccer mom?
Obviously it's not for me then, so why have your worded it like some positive I need to consider?

2) Also as a gamer, how is sacrificing the gaming performance and capabilities of the One for hulu apps a positive?
If I want a gaming first console, why should I choose the xb1?

3) As a gamer, what have I lost if I choose the Ps4?

I've seen some meltdowns from juniors before, but never five posts into their GAF career.

I think there would have to be something more drastic to happen for MS to kill off the Xbox, what with their need to control the user experience in the living room.

Maybe the fall of Windows as the dominant PC OS would do it, but that would be a huge paradigm shift anyway.

You seem to be forgetting that the 'soccer moms, kids and dudebros' tend to go for whatever is cheaper.

Guess which next-gen console is cheaper.

What is this mentality of "lol GAF the nitpicky 'hardcore', nobody will tell the difference lolol"? What is it that they're trying to argue? Justify that MS expects people to pay $500, $100 more than the competition, for 720p in 2013 because "the average consumer" won't see it? Are they applauding MS catering the lowest of the lowest common denominator who can't even see a difference in resolution? Are they saying they're complacent with settling for less because other non-enthusiasts don't care about it? Are they saying nobody should care because the uninformed masses don't even know when they're being taken?

Someone please explain this argument.

It doesn't matter if the casuals don't care about this issue, because the hardcore caring about it will ultimately effect sales to the casuals. The biggest thing that drives the majority of console sales, are console sales. The casuals buy what their friends bought, who bought what their friends bought, and so on all the way down the line until you get to the hardcore who are the ones buying consoles during the first six months to a year or so. The argument that the opinion of the hardcore doesn't matter is extremely shortsighted, and MS is feeling that pain right now. They targeted the mainstream crowd when it is the hardcore that will be driving system sales at launch and for about a year after.

By the time MS's precious COD crowd get around to buying a next gen console things could have shifted heavily towards the PS4.

That's the only thing that makes sense to me too. One of the turn offs for me has been the corporate stink

I would...but I'm not Jaded. There's no argument in this. If Microsoft can't even provide a next generation experience I have no reason to be loyal.
