So the OS of an unreleased console is not functioning 100%? Shocker. Does anyone expect MS to release a console that crashes all the time? It would be suicide.

Xbox360-ringofdeath.jpg

This had my dying.... But so, so, so, so true. I went thru three 360's....still on a 80GB PS3 I got in 2008. I bought a slim PS3 thinking I broke my fat PS3. Turns out I just had to fix the dvd tray, it was off track.

How about a company releasing a software update that breaks older consoles..? That was my experience with the first NXE update on my launch 360.

No I think he's technically right - the actual bottleneck is the usage of DDR3 RAM instead of GDDR5 - ESRAM is just there to lessen the impact of DDR3's low bandwith....

He's not technically right about anything. A bottleneck is just the part of the process that impacts performance the most. In the case of the Xbone, that's currently managing the eSRAM.

If devs didn't utilised eSRAM and just used DDR3 (I don't even know if this is possible for them to do), then the main RAM would then be the (even bigger) bottleneck.

Nice seeing the CBOAT post.

My only issue is he sort of sets himself up to cover in case he's wrong like "Snapback is broken: Fact (but maybe "probably") fixed before launch".

Just wish he could be definite if assertions are being made. Otherwise, I'm with the guy and the storms.

Seems like semantics to me.
Indeed I believe it's just semantics. Like cboat said, they could fix it before launch, I'm sure they're on it as we speak. A slow, sluggish snap feature could be considered broken by some people's standard, slow and in need of fixing by another's. Hell I've seen people call 30fps a "slideshow" when it's perfect for others. Lots of ways to look at it.

Do you ever post anywhere that is not Microsoft related? Your post history is frightening. Do you enjoy games or just Microsoft?

Actually very much a hardcore gamer. My recent post history is entirely because of the ongoing carnival of stupid.

That and I'm currently taking a complete break before next gen because I was burnt out.

Eh, not too much CYA. Basically sounds like snap may be ironed out or lessened for launch, xbl features not as much, compounded by users expecting a gold standard from xbl.

You can't be definite about something a month away. Theoretically they could fix it. Afford him some room for speculation. He's sticking his neck out this much for us.

They survived Windows ME. They'd survive the XB1 crashing all the time too.

Big difference there.

ME: launched in 2000.
XP: launched in 2001, replaced ME.

The XBone will not be replaced after a year. It is aimed to last at least five.

Utterly incomparable scenarios.

Interestingly enough, you make one of the bigger criteria for analysis on 'how you help or enable coworkers to complete their tasks', and it directly eliminates this competition. The staunch teams that took this stackranking to heart abandon it to instead help the previously amicable teams to better the working environment for the entire org. Now, of course you might still get some jockeying--but what I've seen of the process has been very nice for my org.
As a wage worker my entire life, I'm always so surprised by how much initiative and motivation is missing. No one ever works as hard for his master as he does for himself or his true and equal peers and no one has ever washed a rental car. The best a wage worker can hope for is a benign monarchy - and they do exist - and when they do, they beat the snot out of a malignant monarchy AND a democratic company. They beat a malignant monarchy because malignant monarchies demotivate. They beat democratically run companies because they're quicker and more efficient. They're also exceedingly rare and get rarer the larger the companies get.

A benign monarchy can run well using any sufficiently thoughtful systems. A malignant monarchy runs poorly regardless of the systems it uses. A democratically run company runs better or worse depending on how well decisions are delegated and how involved it's owner workers are.

Some companies can motivate their wage slaves sufficiently that they feel both ownership and responsibility. However, this illusion is difficult to maintain.

All of the arguing about 'technicalities' is just semantics. The real issue is explained here. Good post. The ESRAM is not optional so hypothetically you kinda gotta lump the DDR3 and ESRAM don't you?

Hmmm... painful blip between two good OS' when they had a virtual monopoly vs highly competitive console market at a time where dedicated gaming devices are in recession?

Definitely the same thing.

Exactly the point raised in the FamousMortimer thread earlier today. Always a fallback.

Can people who are clearly incapable of discussing technical hardware details stop trying to pose themselves as "experts"? It's why I keep my mouth shut.

They'd survive is they just decided to write off the entire Entertainment and Devices Division. A company the size of, with the cash reserves of MS can prodouce countless follies like Windows ME, Windows 8, Zune, Windows Phone, (Xbox One?) and still survive, just as long as their cash cow divisions are still supporting them

Not suprised that Microsoft is having troubles seeing what a steaming pile of garbage 360 was at launch. Nice to see some insiders blowing the whistle instead of letting consumers waste their money blindly this time around

CBOAT pretty much said the same thing in a roundabout way:

Perhaps they just perceive the word 'broken' differently? Maybe a fairly sluggish snap feature is considered broken to cboat? Maybe to the dev I talked to it's not necessarily broken, just needs fixing.

May be. But that's not what Thuway is saying, right? He said the game simply crashes randomly when using snap. That's not the same as sluggishness. So here are the possibilities:
1) Thuway's source has an outdated version of the OS
2) Thuway's source or Thuway himself is exaggerating the problem
3) Your source is downplaying the issue for many valid reasons. He/she has a horse in this race, right? I'm not saying your source could be lying. He/she could be too close to the issue and might genuinely feel that the issues can be overcome before launch

I guess for the time being we can only sit tight and wait till we get more corroborative evidence in favor of any of those 3 cases.

Thank God you're here to make sure it's 'balanced'.

The real shock here, is that some of you can confuse journalists with videogame reviewers.

They play games, give us a score and an opinion ( that's the order of importance ). Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein they most certainly are not.

You're disregarding the fact that there are many people who present themselves as engaging in journalistic practices when reporting on the industry who then hide behind the "we're not journalists we're just reviewers/random bros" shield when called out.

It's not a fallback. It's just common sense.

Do you have a crystal ball? Can you say with definite certainty what will happen a month from now, even if the signs are there?

No? Then why should CBOAT or any of the leakers?

I posted mostly Sony stuff, some people just have their preferences.

That is very true, but Loudninja I don't see you constantly running defense when anything anti sony comes out. I see you as a Sony centric gamer that loves to keep people updated on sony related games but not to any extreme.

I do get a bit defensive which is embarrassing but most of the time I try to keep a cool head hehe.

aside from the fact that it isnt nearly big enough to cause that type of a bottleneck? Depending on how its addressable by the GPU then the GPU can theoretically move a full up amount of information in and out of it at a minimum of 2 clock cycles which will not starve the rest of the ALU for resources.

Yeah, that's the bottleneck.

No, I agree.....and I love seeing his posts, but people who do leaks or start the rumors (even if they are vetted or not) can really hurt a company if they aren't 100% sure. So if you are going to speak to these things and cause a stir, I'd like a little more accountability as a person rather than make an assertion that can damage someone followed by "well maybe it won't happen".

Seriously, I don't mean to sound harsh...as I have been a big fan of the insiders since the console reveals, but I've been a bit more skeptical lately, but we will see when consoles are released. I'm a PS4 guy by the way, so it's not me wanting to defend Xbox.

Exactly the point raised in the FamousMortimer thread earlier today. Always a fallback.

I guess it could be considered a fallback but it's not as if these kinds of things ever have definite timelines. It's not as if a programmer could predict that X lines of codes specifically need to be changed and it takes Y amount of time per line of code. The way it's always been described is that it's more of a trial and error process since everything is so complicated that fixing one thing can potentially break another.

I've always taken that as the reason why schedules are always tentative and things sometimes get dates pushed back.
