Windows 8.1 |OT| There's your start button

I've had tons of wi-fi problems with Windows 8.1. Updating drivers and googling did nothing.

I'm back on Windows 7 and everything runs well again. I should have learned the lesson: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

If it was random, constant disconnects, then specifying the DNS servers rather than letting them be obtained automatically fixes that one.

so I finally jumped ship from 7 to 8.1, was not having a good time at first but now it's as if I never left 7

boot to desktop enabled
start8 is a good enough start menu replacement
modern mix keeps any win8 apps inside resizable windows
shadow explorer acts as previous versions did in 7
disabled uac entirely which rendered some win8 apps unusable but doesn't matter as I removed most of them
disabled all those corner "chimes" leaving just the 8 start menu

I like it so far, did a quick upgrade with everything intact, no issues with programs and it feels much snappier.

already seen the first benefit with nvidia shadowplay, there is no mp4 file size limit in 8 which allows for 20min of continuos recording. 7 is limited to half of that.

Can you update from a Windows 8.1 ISO if you have Windows 8 already? Or do you have to reinstall Windows?

Basically what I'm asking is what's the difference between an MS Store update and an update from the ISO (if you can), which traditionally is like a non-clean install of Windows.

I couldn't. I have the W8 Pro ISO from Technet and also downloaded the W8.1 Pro RTM there and it only gave me the option to upgrade while keeping personal files.

Can't you just download 8 and put your key in and then go to the windows store to download 8.1?
And the 8.1 iso downloads for me. I don't know what's up on your end...sorry : (
Can't I just torrent the ISO and use my legit product key? I've spent hours trying to fix this shit - tried deleting original folders, tried restarting the PC, tried it on my laptop. This is weird - I managed to download the Windows 8 ISO fine just the other day. Now when I try to download it again it cannot connect (I need it to connect so I can download the Win 8.1 ISO using the 8.1 installer).

I just want a copy of the ISO burned to a disc or USB. It's much more handy to have as opposed to installing Win 8 then updating to 8.1.

Does anyone else get multiple instances of breaking news alert toasts? I just got 4 at the same time.

I got about the same amount when the "royal baby" was born. Ironically, I only remembered this because I couldn't have cared less but it kept telling me.

Anyone know/heard of a work around to the issue where Win 8.1 wont install because of a version of MS Sql Server is installed on the system? The only workaround I've read about so far is uninstalling Sql Server and that's just not an option on my work machine due to time constraints.

I recommended my roommate to upgrade to 8.1 and she asked me to do it for her. So I clicked on the install button in the store. 8.1 installed just as planned but now the gestures (two finger scrolling) on her trackpad won't work anymore and she blames me that I broke her computer. I tried installing drivers from Lenovo's homepage but nothing happened. To be honest I never knew much about driver issues and whatever, so does anyone if you know a fix for that problem?

Can't just export the db?

Any luck reenabling them through the touchpad tab in the control panel mouse config? When I installed 8.1 all my gestures had disabled themselves (and made that the default for some reason) so I had to go there to turn them back on.

Can't just export the db?

I can get the 7 GB (compressed back up whenever I need) It's the multiplicity of schemas involved, transaction setting, user accounts and all the other fine tuned settings like MSDTC safe settings that makes it all hairy. It takes about 4 to 6 hours of my day to move files around, install, restore and then fine tune and I can't afford to have things go wrong in the process. I'll eventually have to do it but I just have to wait for a fix or a good spot in between project sprints :(

I really like 8.1 on my tablet so I'm getting the goodness somewhat. I'm not suffering from too much cognitive dissonance moving back and forth between 8 and 8.1 as I've been forced to do something similar between Windows 7 and 8 for a year now :)

Fuck ASUS and Dell for their shitty 35% markups on their 8.1 tablets in Australia. When you exclude GST, the Venue 8 Pro is $410 and $300 in Australia and the US respectively, and the Transformer Book T100 $545 and $400.

By comparison Microsoft's markup on the Surface line is 5% ($580 vs. $550) and Apple's markup is 0% for the MacBook Airs and 10% for everything else. Toshiba's Encore is similar with a price 10% higher.

If I do a fresh install on my SSD (Windows 7 currently) will it delete files on my secondary harddrive?

No. When you go through the custom/advanced install process to do a clean install you can choose which drive to install to and format/partition it in the way you want. You can always disconnect the sata or power cable to any drive but the one you're installing to if you're worried.

Thanks. I left my HDD in but I have another SSD I have left unplugged :)

Worked! Thanks. Anyone else run into the .NET framework 2.5 problem? Microsoft--because they're really, really smart--only includes the latest .NET but doesn't include the old versions (e.g. 2.5, 3.0, 4.0) by default. Problem is many programs require earlier version of .NET (e.g., 360 controller, NVIDIA GeForce Experience). So you have to install it manually through the control panel. Problem is, my installation always got to only 98% before failing. Lots of people have this problem. No any other way to install it, even through the command prompt as administrator. Had to do a complete reinstall. Working now!

Unless you've disabled some standard capabilities, features like old versions of .NET will automatically prompt you to install when they're required.

I have this non-issue where even if my volume is at zero (not muted but zero), I can still hear stuff from my speakers/earphones. It's not too big of a deal since I can barely hear anything, but it's just kind of odd. Any ideas as to how to fix it? I have a Surface Pro 1 if that makes any difference.

I have to come in here just to note how amazing the Food & Drink app is. It's amazing.

I've already made a meal using it. Love taking the tablet into my kitchen with that app.

EDIT: I would love to see either an incorporation of AllReciples.com into this app or the site itself given the same treatment in its own app. My only gripe is the hands-free mode could use some fine tuning and the ability to reliably page forwards or go back. Perhaps add an audio option.

I got the retail version of win 8.1 fresh install on a SSD. Other than initial problems of activating windows ( I had to use a "restore" option) to fix it everything has been smooth as butter. Everything works as intended with zero problems so far. (knock on wood).

Seems like most of the problems come from upgrading older window versions. You should always wait a month or two to iron out most of the bugs.

Keep in mind the last version of windows I was using was XP so this has been a massive improvement. What really blew me away is when I was installing windows it automatically detected all my hardware components and installed the drivers automatically without me so much as lifting a finger. My computer was using wifi as well. Never seen that before. (yes I'm a newbie)

I did a clean install on my lenovo Y500 SLI laptop after the Vbios came out this week that fixed the sli issue with windows 8.1. The install went fine however during boot after the POST there is no windows logo just a black screen and boots directly to the log in screen. I did a GPT install, and secureboot is on.

Has anyone gotten the hands free mode to work in Food & Drink? I've tried a number of times and it's always useless.

I know it relies on your web cam to detect gestures, so I made sure to do it in a well-lit area, still nothing. Even opened up the Camera app to make sure the picture was good - it was.

Does anyone here use Windows 8 or 8.1 on a domain? When I initially log in with a Microsoft account the metro apps work fine. As soon as I join the domain no metro apps work. Logging back in as a local account the metro apps still work so I suspect it may be something to do with group policy.

I couldn't find anything in group policy related to metro apps. Running SBS 2011 (essential 2008 R2).

yeah be careful with proxies and so forth here, they are pretty terrible for metro apps. Are they internet apps?

what kind of errors you get? We got a bunch of shit with proxies/authentication nothing working in metro but regular web browser working fine.

I Need Help!

Windows 8.1 seems to have broke everything for me. Well.. mostly display drivers but it keeps getting BSOD every time I try to update them. I wanna just do a clean install of windows 8.1 but I lost the disc and MS won't accept my key since I bought an OEM version. Is there a way to re-install it somehow?

Need more information. Have you tried reverting to a restore point? Have you tried using the built-in refresh feature to do a clean reinstall? What exactly wont accept your key? Do you have a w8 or w8.1 iso?

How far away was your hand from the web cam? Anything greater than 30cm and it doesn't seem to work at all for me. Moving closer, it does seem to work quite well.

Silly me never made a restore point so it restores to the moment I installed 8.1 which doesn't help. The refresh features requires the disc or iso to complete the process. The problem is I don't have it, and if I try to download it directly from microsoft it give me an error telling me my key is invalid. So I called microsoft and they told me the reason why I can't download it straight from them is because I bought an OEM version from newegg and the download using a key option requires a retail key. They told me to talk to newegg and see if they can resend me the installation disc but I asked and the told me they couldn't. So now I'm simply trying to find a way to get the ISO but I also worry that if I download it some other way my OEM key won't be accepted. I don't know if it works that way.

The reason why I even want to re-install is because for whatever reason every time I attempt to install AMD drivers above 13.4 i get bsod. I've tried so many things but it doesn't seem to work. I've received various bsod reasons but the most common is " system thread exception not handled atikmpag.sys" followed by "irql not less or equal".

I had no problems at all until I upgraded to 8.1. I can't even play BF4 because it needs 13.11 :(

I just tried it out. It works for me, but from what I can tell the algorithm for free hands mode doesn't track your hand, but tracks which way your hand blocks out the camera, hence why your hand has to be close to the camera.

Well yeah, a standard webcam (especially the type in the average laptop/tablet) isn't exactly the best device to carry out any form of actual tracking with, so that makes sense. Using a piece of paper and covering and then un-covering the camera with it works as well.

Yeah I tried it once while cooking, the hand swipes worked fine for me.

does anyone know how to get rid of links from the app page

I have things program links leading to places on my computer that no longer exist

I'll ask this in here, though I doubt anyone knows for sure:

I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate install and activated on my machine. I would like to go the 7->8->8.1 upgrade route to avoid installing all of my app. I have a full transferable 8.1 Core key and media but no product key for Windows 8. I have the Windows 8 iso, so my hope is I can upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 with that and skip the product key activation portion, since I believe you have 30 days. Then I want to use the Windows 8.1 media to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 and at that point use my Windows 8.1 full product key. It just seems like a potential corner case that may not work. I'd like to avoid clean installing.

Do you want to keep your installed programs? Because if so you would first need to downgrade your 7 Ultimate to Home/Pro to upgrade.

I didn't have the option for 30 days like I did with 7, I had to install the key in order to continue the installation...
