Crimson Dragon (Xbox One) Reviews Thread

I agree. We've gone through this with the PS4 already. The reviewers seem like they are going to be extra harsh on these launch games. Their score may not be indicative of your enjoyment.

I agree with this, but I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing if ratings systems become more harsh this coming generation. However, it could just be that games like The Last of Us and GTAV have thrown things more clearly into perspective, so publishers can no longer rush out above-average games for launch and expect guaranteed 8/10s. Of course, we'll need to see more reviews of the Xbone launch titles to decide whether there's a real pattern here, or if it was just that the PS4 line-up wasn't all that great.

Actually it does matter. If Ryse has repetitive gameplay I'll buy it at a discount. If this game gets 6-7s across the board....@ $20 I'll consider it if I'm bored or interested.

There's a reason Steam has sales throughout the year. $20 or less and people buy the crap out of games...even if they're mediocre.

I don't agree. If a game shit, I'm not gonna buy it, period. It doesn't matter to me how much it is.

Was it really that hard to get the composer from PD1 or 2? Did the devs even know why people liked the originals? Star Fox on a dragon. Not that hard to figure out guys.

Bummed about the low scores on this one. Was expecting 6's and 7's probably, but 4's and 5's? Ouch.

I will still buy it because I am obsessively addicted to anything Panzer Dragoon (I played the Windows Phone Crimson Dragon version for a few hours...).

I honestly can't believe anyone thought this game would amount to anything amazing, especially after a lot of the critical reception in the gaming media throughout its reveal. As with Ryse, I think it will be hard for any dev to take a game originally planned for last gen and make it into a next-gen experience; the results will always be sub-par.

Like Ryse and Powershot Golf, Crimson Dragon unfortunately employs a microtransaction option to buy more currency. But! It's mostly inoffensive, because you can just buy everything through gameplay. If anyone is familiar with Mass Effect 3, it basically operates by allowing players to buy "boosters" or other items with "Jewels" -- the real-life currency of the game.

I don't like that this system is in place in the slightest, but I never once felt like I had to pay money. Instead, I was inspired to level up my dragons through normal gameplay, and simply improve my skills. Co-op multiplayer support is on the horizon, set for a December update that will allow up to three players to go on missions simultaneously. For now, you'll have to deal with single-player.

Crimson Dragon was a pleasant surprise. As a massive fan of the Panzer series, I was worried that this wouldn't quite honor it, but there's plenty here for gamers who have been longing for an entry since 2003's Orta. There are some mechanical problems, but any old-school rail shooter fan will be able to handle them.

Oh well. I had been getting some vibes in previews/hands-on that it might not match up in overall "spirit" with Panzer Dragoon proper. It sounds like the game design is a bit looser than some of us might prefer what with wingmen of vague usefulness and some open movement stages which have been noted before. I'd still pony up the $20 if I had an XB1 to see for myself if any of the PD magic was there.

What I do know is that tonight I'm dialing up Panzer Dragoon Orta on good "old" 360. I also know that Panzer Dragoon has held up for me, as I already recently replayed Orta after being inspired by the PD stage in Sonic Racing Transformed.

Seeing the playthrough videos I can understand why it's getting ripped apart it doesn't look great. But it's $20 dollars it's probably going to be free next year with the games on live thing starts for the XB1. I'll end up getting it as it will be a nice departure from the other launch games.

Venture Beat:

If Crimson Dragon had been released for iOS or Android devices at a cheaper price, it would be one of the year’s more interesting releases. Instead, the final product is a rushed, homogenized mess of a game that fails to live up to its loosely associated pedigree.

There’s a couple good ideas in here, but they’ve been haphazardly thrown into an unimpressive package that does nothing to stand out against far better Xbox One launch titles. As it stands, the Panzer Dragoon series is still as dead as ever.

I suppose there goes any chance of Phantom Dust 2 being made :(

Review scores doesn't translate to sales. BELIEVE!

Frankly, I was never optimistic. This & Powerstar Golf felt like MS threw it out there simply to pad their launch line-up. Practically no marketing whatsoever.

That's a shame. Probably still going to buy it for the nostalgia feels (I've played all the Panzer Dragoon titles).

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact it started as a Kinect game and then they had to rework it as a proper game. I imagine the game design would be quite different depending on how the player was supposed to interact. I have a feeling Ryse is going to have a similar outcome. Dat Mattrick effect.

I'm not getting an xbone, but I wanted this game to make me want to get one. Sad to see it reviewing so poorly. I really liked Panzer Dragoon, and would like to see more rail shooters.

This is... quite disappointing.

And we can't really chalk it up as "railshooters don't work anymore" when considering that Sin and Punishment 2 was a big hit in terms of reviews, even though it came out a few years ago.

I guess the Team Andromeda magic is truly lost.

:( well, that's that then.

Very difficult to replicate the glory that was Team Andromeda.

Amen, the spirit of that team has long since passed into the ether.

Ouch, Polygon redeemed then? Lol, it simply appears the game has some faults.

However, just to be a voice of reason, Knack had crappy reviews, and if you go to the Official Knack Thread, it appears nearly every person that has played it is really enjoying it. Seriously, nearly every gaffer. So dont let these reviews sway you too much if you are truly interested in this game. It may be very enjoyable, but the reviewers just didn't get it.

Seems about right as it has the same gameplay from 10 years ago and they haven't really changed much of it. I think that if you enjoyed Panzar Dragoon you'll know what to expect from this game and know exactly what you're getting when you buy it.
