Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

well that list's missing new vegas and freeside restoration, which are absolute essentials for me

then a couple mods I really like (and the creator is a super nice dude that deserves the attention) are his npc project mods

he basically added a ton of cut npcs that make a lot of areas feel a lot more lively and finished. it's great.

also here are moburma's awesome restoration mods

finally for the love of god get mtui

the rest is basically covered by that reddit thread

Those restorations mod looks really cool!
I'm probably going to use all of these.

And that ui mod is godsend.

also of that reddit's thread I absolutely recommend:
project nevada: the quintessential new vegas mod, I disable a bunch of its features like enhancements because they're pretty broken imo but it just makes your hardcore runs a lot better
weapons retexture project: I usually hate retexture mods but this one's very good and lore-friendly
new vegas redesigned: prolly my favorite mod
nevada skies: sandstorms are pretty cool and the vanilla setting looks pretty much like enhanced vanilla, instead of some of that hideous overblown oversatured overcontrasted black-destroyed enb stuff
populated casons: it's a world of difference, really livens up new vegas

I feel like I repeat myself a lot in this thread by recommending the same mods over and over

I should prolly make a guide or something

About the Project Nevada and the Mission Mojave mods, I don't have the Gun Runner Arsenal DLC, will they work?

TronLight

Everybody is Mikkelsexual
project nevada will

dunno about mission mojave

You are right.
I tried installing Mission Mojave by itself, and it crashes the game. :(
It's a shame, I wanted all those fixes... Maybe I'll buy the runner arsenal in the next sales.

Anyway, intalled all the other mods, Project Nevada, populated casinos, restorations... And everything seems fine.

The mods that add new npc are very nice, places are much more lively this way.

Aaaaand now, let's go back to the Mojave Wasteland.

zkylon

you should buy gra+stash since it's mandatory for jesawyer's mod and you might want to try that out to see how he envisions new vegas

sadly not a single $ goes to obs since beth pockets it all

What mods would you recommend if you want characters - both my own and NPC's - look better?

the fantastic new vegas redesigned 2 for npcs

I'm not a big fan of any of the skin mods, but I'm keeping an eye in this mod called men of the wasteland that basically redid all the basic faces only for the player character. It's a mix of two mods, one for males and one for females and from the screenshots it looks really good without being an anime moe thing or looking fresh out the hair salon like some other mods

So I just downloaded the Ultimate Edition for New Vegas. I've played a little bit before, but I'm basically starting fresh. From a fresh standpoint, what would be the best mods to install to make my first playthrough as epic as possible?

I'm not going to play Hardcore because I don't like the idea of having to watch my basic functions (just seems like an unnecessary piece of gameplay for me). But I do love new areas, fun side quests, and "stuff". I will download a flora/fauna mod because I do like some greenery.

One thing that Fallout 3 did that I really loved was have a bunch of little areas that had fun and sort of creepy stories going on (Dunwich Building, Andale, the other Vaults, etc). NV didn't appear to have those at first, but maybe stuff like that exists later? I just like having those fun places to explore and learn about.

Thanks for the help!

yes, new vegas has a few creepy/interesting locations to visit (vault 11 is one of the best fallout locales ever) but since it's overall more populated it's a different style of game overall. you talk more and you loot less

absolute barebones mods for a vanilla run you're gonna want mtui and pretty much nothing else

I do recommend playing the game on hardcore, as it balances shit like stimpaks for a much better experience and it's not that annoying as people may think (it's not annoying at all if you ask me)

I've been looking at the New Vegas Redesigned mod, but the description text of it makes it seem like it asking for trouble to install it. I've got quite a lot of other mods installed, and I don't want to mess all of them up now just because of this one.

Are any mods known for causing issues with textures or meshes?

I have Project Nevada, MMUE, NV Bounties 1&2, YOP, NMC texture pack large, and for some reason most ghoul npcs (a few are ok, like Beatrix and the Bright followers) have the big red sign on them. Some of the feral ghouls have it as well but most don't. I also get the red signs on some buildings. I've also seen it a few times on tables and once on the ground in a Ranger Camp.

Any ideas what it might be? I tried installing a ghoul retexture pack but that didn't help.

sounds like either missing textures of an archiveinvalidation invalidated thing. make sure to activate archive invalidation in nexus mod manager

And yes, there are plenty of interesting/creepy quests or even unmarked quests in New Vegas. A couple Vaults for starters, a ncr camp, even a place on the strip. And more for sure. If you haven't played the dlc you'll find some cool stuff in those too.

Kind of surprised modders didn't do for Fallout 3 and Vegas what they did for Skyrim (and Oblivion to a extent) ENB-wise. I'd honestly rather a utterly amazing looking ENB+mod set for Fallout than Elder Scrolls...

zkylon

zkylewd
The actual installation process is probably not hard, but I'm a bit afraid about conflicts, which the mods descriptions warns heavily about.

you shouldn't have any problems unless you use other face mods and maybe you'll get some skin color not matching and stuff like that

backup it and then install it

it's worth it

I'm using Fallout Mod Manager and it has Archiveinvalidation turned on by default. Are there any issues with that?

haven't used fomm in a long time but I'm pretty sure that's ok

you won't lose much from just trying unticking it (worst that can happen is textures not applying)

you may want to reinstall your texture mods if you're still getting the exclamation marks

I ended up grabbing:

Flora overhaul
NV Bounties I and II
Project Nevada
AWOP

Since I don't like a ridiculous amount of difficulty (I like a challenge that I can overcome without too much frustration), I'm playing on Hard Softcore. I can always bump the difficulty to Very Hard if I feel the game is TOO easy. But I find the exploring more enticing than the crazy challenge.

That's partially why Fallout 3 was such a magical gaming experience to me - the world felt so eerie. Sure it was expansive and full of dull boring expanses, but wandering the wasteland and stumbling upon the Nuka-Cola Quantum factory or the Dunwich building was MAGICAL. The game never gave me much trouble difficulty wise, and I got to see and learn about a lot of creepy locations.

I may grab another graphical mod if I feel inclined, but my machine seems to like the settings and mods I've got now without much of an issue. It WAS doing some weird micro-jump/stutter last night, but it could have been because I was still right at the beginning of the game and everything was initializing. If I find that it keeps doing that, I may have to see if any of you guys can help me optimize my mods or something...It's always hard to tell WHY a game does this sort of stuff when you're toying with the overall world, ha.

hardcore mode doesn't increase the difficulty of combat (aside from the stimpak change).

obsidian should've made it mandatory and balance the game around it

I feel like Hardcore would basically turn into me abusing fast travel. I need water? Fast travel to a location I know has water! Limbs need healing? Fast travel to a doctor/my bed/whatever it was that heals it. Etc.

I could put the constraint on myself that I can't fast travel, but seriously, that wouldn't happen. I'd get sick of having to babysit my vitals in that respect. If it were mandatory, I probably wouldn't notice. But since I can opt out of it, I'm probably working it up to be worse than it really is.

zkylon

fast travel takes food/water/sleep into account

if you fast travel across the map most of the times you'll find yourself on the brink of death

Reinstalled NV, not into heavy modding, graphics mostly. But I'm wondering can jsawyer mod and the project nevada rebalance module, work together? Or does jsawyer get overridden? (cause your can edit nevada options in game).

zkylon

zkylewd
the mod that you place lower on the load order (farther from the new vegas esm) will override the other whenever there's conflicts

so if you want both I'd advice you to install project nevada, disable the rebalance module and then install jesawyer and place it below pe.

so it should be something like

newvegas.esm
dlc.esm
<other esms>
<all your other mods>
projectnevada.esp
jesawyer.esp

not 100% but I'm pretty sure this should work

hope that helps

I always thought the lower an item it will override the things above it, so .esms are loaded then .esps like a deck of cards, so the last one in overrides all above it.

Soo, I decided to install F:NV and install the couple of mods mentioned in the first post, however I now have a very annoying glitch.

For some weird reason I can see through the textures. Sometimes it's the faint outlining of the texture infront of me, other times its a texture completely showing up through all the other textures.

For example:
ScreenShot21.jpg

Water showing through other textures. This also happens with the grass.

I know it's the ENB causing it. Turning it off makes the problems dissapear. I already switched to the last ENB but that didn't fix it.

Edit:
Found out AA was causing the problems.

I might be wrong but I believe you have to put Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering to Off in the New Vegas launcher.
The enb mod has its own AA and AF settings. Turning them off for me did fix a similar bug that I was experiencing.

Does anyone know of a mod that makes companions vulnerable, without having to switch to hardcore mode? Doing some epic last stands on a separate save becomes a lot less cool when your allies only ever get knocked unconscious.

Getting crashes whenever I try to install cybernetics from Project Nevada. Anyone know what could be causing it? Here's my load order.

Hola all, just about to start an NCR playthrough for the first time. Have any of you found specific lore friendly mods out there that would compliment it?

there's a ncr mod that just got released that prettiest up the ncr troops, but that's about as far as I've tried: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/52721/?

also I've just randomly found out this completely unrelated mod that I know I'm really gonna like because I live for oh fuck moments: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/45003//?

Why the long case?
Wanted to ask something that I probably should have asked way earlier.

If the installation guidelines of a mod direct one to simply merge data folder with that of Fallout's, does that mean that the mod is most likely not compatible with NMM or FOMM?

Also, in the case that I have to mod that way, what is the meaning of "activating the .esp"?

Personally, I've been really impressed with what they've accomplished on A Tale of Two Wastelands so far.

They're still quite far off from completion, so I'm personally holding off from creating a character through it as I don't want to have to restart/get burned out too soon. Really looking forward to the day it's done though.

then a couple mods I really like (and the creator is a super nice dude that deserves the attention) are his npc project mods

Thank you, these are indeed excellent. Though I'm not going with full restorations as it seems there's a lot of conflicts with other NPC adjustments I prefer.

So, I've tried with and without mods on Windows 8 and 8.1 to play Fallout 3 and as soon as I get to the wasteland, my framerate drops form 60 to 30 (or below). It shouldn't happen based on my hardware, which is:

i7 2600k
AMD 7970
16 GB RAM
Game installed on a SSD

Any help?

So I grabbed NMM to grab some Fallout 3 mods and....after download that NMC pack for a long ass time, it just stops and says unable to finish download, and I can't start it again through NMM?

I seriously cannot fathom what I am doing wrong with the NMC texture pack for FO3.

I install it exactly as the instructions ask, yet it either doesn't work at all or very VERY few textures work. I know this thread is somewhat dead, but can anyone provide input?

Odd, textures are normally very straightforward. First thing would be to make sure that the textures folder in Fallout 3\Data actually has all the files (it'll be several GB in size if so). Next thing would be to set up or redo archive invalidation, which is something your mod manager of choice should be able to do.
