This is whats wrong with Elder Scrolls Online

BigTnaples

Todd Howard's Secret GAF Account
This has so much potential as a concept.

Looks too far gone already though.

Wake me up when Elder Scrolls VI is announced, and we can all forget this ever happened.

You're playing a human wearing a cat mask. :D

Kaijiit and Argonians walk differently and can't wear human boots. They are beastmen. Not humans wearing a Halloween mask.

Actually, while I'll grant you the "walk differently" part, I was deliberately not putting boots on my Khajiit. Granted, I gain absolutely nothing for doing so (in fact, I'm shutting myself off from a few of the Light Armor/Heavy Armor skill tree bonuses which require a full set of armor, boots included), but hell, I feel like it.

...can't say as I'm going full Morrowind-style, though, because A) I haven't played Morrowind to compare (it's on the agenda at some point) and B) I'm wearing headwear, which IIRC Morrowind Khajiit couldn't do(?).

(...also, Arena and Daggerfall Khajiit were basically entirely humanoid, down to having pretty much no fur, right? Morrowind Khajiit are the only ones I know of with the digitigrade feet thing, barring mods.)

I thought it was pretty established in the lore that Khajiit come in many forms, some even look pretty much just like elves and not cat-like at all. In fact, those were seen before Morrowind (Ohmes)

The Morrowind Kahjiit breed (Suthay-raht) is different from the Oblivion and Skyrim one (Cathay)

Goddammit, how hard would it have been to make it a different race.

also, Bethesda is re-writing their lore on this major of canon means they're going to only get worse.

Fuck this game.

How long until the whole project crashes and burns and Bethesda declares it non-canon? Because the retcons I've seen so far are making my head spin.

You mean like this?
http://www.vg247.com/2013/06/13/tod...-awesome-dont-expect-news-on-it-anytime-soon/

“Zenimax Online Studio is an MMO shop,” said Hines. “They’re making an Elder Scrolls MMO and that is 100% unrelated to [the single-player series]. Todd Howard, at this point, has earned the right to do what the hell he wants; nobody gets to tell him different and nobody gets to dictate to him what he gets to do.

This game every time it pops up it's never good news.
While It might not turn out to bad, I see it flopping just like SWTOR. Don't even think the console versions will help it out.

Flopping just like SWTOR? So it'll be a fantastic game about a year after release?

I'm sorry, but what is this thread about? No-one in it has even played the finished game, and nitpicking the lore is rather pointless as it is already wildly variant. I don't hold out much hope TSO will be more than another WoW reskin, but at least let's wait until it's out.

Praise Sithis, eh? This is getting better and better. And with better i mean worse than the beta. Which is hard to believe, but oh well...

There was a beta people were playing in, and "diverging from the lore" is something else than "Kahjiit praising Sithis in bright daylight".

That is not true.

This is NeoGAF, where everything sucks until proven otherwise and even then it still probably sucks.

I don't see what all the negativity is about...

Its a Elder Scrolls MMO. It will be immersive and interesting until you reach cap, like many MMO's are (not all).
I will enjoy it until then, as usual.

Thought OP was going to have a summary of all the negative points in terms of gameplay, but now it seems like a shallow ESO bashing thread.
Bit disappointing.

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
at this point, they oughta repurpose the game, make it single player, and sell it with a "multiplayer/co-op mode" feature selling point.

"Praise Sithis!"
Oh fuck off no one would ever say his name aloud in praise in public and Argonians worship the Hist so he must be Dark Brotherhood which makes it even more stupid.
Also Argonians are immune/resistant to poisons

Came in here to say that. That, to me, is even more annoying than the poison thing. I can buy the idea of some ultra-powerful/race-specific poison that can affect an Argonian, but the "praise Sithis" thing is a total immersion-breaker for me. (Unless this is a Dark Brotherhood quest line or something? I'm not sure if I should give them that much credit, though. >.> )

Well, I should say, that no-one who has played it can talk about it then. I assume it is NDA?

I dont think anyone is talking about the game in-so-far as what is in the beta, but what has been already shown. A lot of ES fans are fans because of the lore(it is very very good) more so then the gameplay. So far ES looks and has a ES feel, but the lore is very important, to me(and seemingly others), as much as the gameplay(much more important, to me).

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
I just don't think the concept of an online Elder Scrolls make sense in general. The series in general is about being a one-man wrecking crew that does everything; indeed, I'd say the genre of game is the quintessential single player game. Its fundamentally at odds with a multiplayer game.

You mean the scroll that turns you blind and insane when you read them?

And take decades of devoted reading to reveal anything meaningful, yes.

aren't argonians resistant to poison?
Yes they are.

You realize you stole and in fact can read an Elder Scroll in Oblivion right?
Looking at an Elder Scroll =/= Reading an Elder Scroll

You're playing a human wearing a cat mask. :D

Kaijiit and Argonians walk differently and can't wear human boots. They are beastmen. Not humans wearing a Halloween mask.
Beast race faces and bodies have never looked better (or had more diverse racial abilities) but your single most important qualifier for being a beast race is having digitigrade feet? That's silly.

Man, look at something with writing on it and tell me you don't subconciously read part of it immediately. That shit just happens.

It's not written in a language that normal people can intuitively understand. Whole orders of scholar-monks formed specifically to decipher them. It takes years to glean even the barest revelation from one and that time will likely blind the reader, if not drive them mad if they fail to properly prepare before reading one.

elder scroll reading spoilers

There's a book in skyrim that explains the effects of reading scrolls on different groups of people, broken up into their level of intellect/understanding of elder scrolls. Basically, if you have spent your life preparing to read an elder scroll, you can read a lot before you go blind. If you haven't, but you know how and have the discipline, you can read one before going blind. If you know how, but haven't disciplined yourself or prepared yourself, it will drive you mad.

If you don't know how to read an Elder Scroll, you'll just see a bunch of moonrunes that your mind will dismiss as moonrunes. It won't make any sense. The bad side effects of reading elder scrolls are basically cosmic costs "paid" for the knowledge.

Has this always been the lore, or is this retcon stuff to make up for the fact that they didn't want to program different walking animations and different model rigs for those races.

When this game BOMBS, and it will BOMB hard, I hope Bethesda learns their lesson and focuses solely on single-player content. You know the stuff that make them lots of money. Stick to what you know and experiment within that sphere.

Some things were just not meant to be made into an MMO. The Elder Scrolls is one of them. I can see this hurting the IP badly.

I think this is more a zenimax project then a bethseda one.

A different studio is making the MMO. So it probably has no bearing on the SP game.

I have played almost every Western MMO and this is 100% without question the worst I have ever played. ESO is a terrible game.
