Joystiq: PC versions of Dark Souls, Red Faction: Guerrilla and more removing GFWL

Shit, FUEL got delisted from Steam? I think that means Codemasters won't update it or provide any further support for it. Damn, I like playing FUEL from time to time. I hope it will work well with an offline profile (and my existing savegames, I doubt it though... GFWL is so cocky about savegames using with different profiles, it's a nightmare. Lost many times my progress because of the GFWL crap.)

It surprises me that Joystiq didn't mention GTA IV (scratch that, only read the OP before, read the article now). I'm confident that Rockstar will patch it eventually though, because I guess it still sells well on PC, no? And if not, there is still the xliveless mod (thank God).

The opposite seems more likely to me:

Dirt 2 and Fuel are likely having GFWL removed as they've been in quite a few bundles semi-recently, even after being pulled from Steam, and each have a new app in the registry.

Codemasters wouldn't have continued to distribute Dirt 2 and Fuel, even after removing them from Steam, if there was no intention to remove GFWL, plus one thing I forgot to mention is that GamersGate couldn't fulfil many Fuel orders recently as Codemasters won't provide keys until "[it has] finished updating the game". This reasoning aligns perfectly with there being a new app in the registry.

YES. HOLY SHIT. Does this mean Guerrilla multiplayer lives on?

THANK YOU BASED NORDIC GAMES.

Reactor Zero handled the PC port. Assuming they're still around, I could picture Nordic contacting them about it.

Edit: WAIT, SHIT, NO MORE LOST PLANET 2 COOP POSING.

Good point, I didn't realise Volition didn't handle the port themselves. I do wonder whether Reactor Zero are still around though, they haven't updated their website since 2010. I'd guess that they aren't.

Just glad this thing is dead.

I feel bad for titles potentially lost, but I'm sure something will be figured out...

Booting up Street Fighter without this bloatware is going to be a dream.

If they pull that "sorry, your old saves are no longer useable" crap, someone better find a way to make them usable, because... ugh, I don't even want to think about starting over in Dark Souls.

The thing is I literally have never had any problems with Games For Windows Live. It was kind of cool seeing my friends who were online on their Xboxes and being able to message them as well.

It didn't make the program feel bloated for you? Everyone I've ever spoken with regarding it has agreed it's cumbersome to the point of frustration. And if you've ever tried to recover forgotten account information you'll know how painful their support can be...

It alweays feels ridiculous to have a sign in within a game that was accessed via signing in to Steam. Sign-inception is not fun.

So how has this worked with disc copies in in past (in Batman, Bioshock etc.)? Will I be able to plug my CD key from my into Steam, or is this conversion only for copies that were purchased through Steam originally?

I have to agree. Also the cross console private chat was pretty cool.

Eh, you actually did, you just aren't aware of it.
For a start, there is a reason if the overwhelming majority of GFWL had abysmal post-release patch support, and it's tied to Microsoft policies about charging for patches and forcing them through long certification processes.

And that negates what he said... how?
I too never had GFWL problems, aside from it taking ages to sign in/being there in the first place.

Are you for real? You don't even need to guess, just to read; I just stated explicitly *HOW* that negates what he said.
He claimed "it never affected me negatively" and I said "Yes it did, but you aren't aware of it" and explained why.

Don't tell me they're just gonna let that list of games die..

If by "they" you mean Microsoft and/or Capcom: they're just gonna let that list of games die. 90% chance at least. Sorry :(

In the event they actually do something, it'll be a minimal workaround. Don't expect it, though. In their minds, they've made their money, and any work towards customer satisfaction is just a drain on the profits.

Valve should just delist every game there isn't a plan for right now, with no public announcement to prevent them from getting a lot of panic sales.

edit: Yes I am for real. Simply having to use GFWL does not in fact make it a bad experience because Microsoft set it up terribly. Having GFWL the in-game client fuck up and break on him would, imo.

They've already done that with several games, actually. Fable III, Dirt 2, Microsoft Flight, and Fuel have all been taken off. Ace Combat Assault Horizon also cannot be bought from Steam right now as there's a major CD key issue going on.

I'm amazed most of Capcom's GFWL library is still up there, although I expect quite a bit of them will be taken down soon as well.

The games weren't pulled by Valve -- it's a publisher decision.

Lack of dawn of war II and expansion on this list is very sad
Indeed it is. Didn't Relic remove GFWL from Company of Heroes ages ago? I wonder if THQ going under and them being sold to Sega is the issue here? Doesn't Relic or Sega still have the Warhammer 40k license as well though? I find it hard to believe they'd still keep selling the original DOW series and DOW2: Retribution while dropping DOW2 and Chaos Rising, in terms of the Blood Ravens story you lose quite a bit without those 2 games leading up to Retribution.

CoH didn't have GFWL.

Sega is listed as the publisher of DoW2 on Steam, so it is indeed up to them to patch it out of DoW2.

What about Fallout 3/Goty?

They better remove that trash from Ace Combat, i haven't managed to play the game because the CD key is invalid.

The original versions of the Company of Heroes games don't use GFWL but the situation is similar: Relic opted to use Quazal for multiplayer, which last year Ubi announced would soon be shutting down, so a new Steamworks-based app for the games was added to the registry and existing keys were made Steam-friendly. As for Warhammer, while neither Sega nor Games Workshop commented on the matter of whether or not Sega inherited THQ's licence, the games are still up on Steam so evidently it was, and a Relic developer did say that there was a "strong possibility" of Dawn of War 3 coming to fruition.

On a related note, I think I should probably point that Dark Souls is receiving a lot of updates in the Steam Database in the last two months:
http://steamdb.info/app/211420/

But it's hard to tell (for me) how many of them are from FROM Software and how many are just generic updates to Steam that affected even the game somehow.

Everything dated 20 days ago and newer was just Valve tinkering with things.

This thread reminds me that in addition to beating Dark Souls, I also need to get around to playing Viva Pinata...

You don't have to have Steam running to play SF4/SSF4 -- just GFWL. And Steam is/was heavier than GFWL, and is/was worse for during-game communication.

That's not to say that I'll miss GFWL, of course. GFWL suffered from its own glitches (particularly on Windows 8) and in practice I'm always signed into Steam anyway.

This GfWL crap is another reason I'm afraid to buy Origin and uPlay games.

I don't have the same amount of trust in Ubisoft or EA that I have in Valve. Will I be able to download some random DLC that I bought today 10 years from now? I fell confident that I will with Steam games, but not so much with the others.

I have no idea why people keep making up comparisons like this, especially now that we don't even need to guess anymore, but we can explicitly measure it, with both the Batman Games gaining several frames per second since they made their transition from GFWL to Steamworks.

It happened constantly even with Origin ("it's lighter than Steam", even if you need just to check to realize that it isn't).

Soooooooooooo

We won't be able to play games that we paid money for at some point in the near future? Not being able to play games like Dirt 1-3 or RE5 ever again would be a huge letdown.
