2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Should've went for the 1050ti with the Dell or Acer but the 1050 is still good. Also I don't think an i7 would be that big of a leap from the i5 as long as the games are properly optimized.

Thanks man and yeah the GTX 1050 is sufficient, I think. At least for now. Every game I've tried on it including newer releases like Doom runs like a dream. Also agreed on the i5 versus i7 argument. The machine is lightning fast and sufficiently quick that there'd only be a minimal difference had I waited it out and opted for the more expensive model. I'm super happy with the machine and think I'm probably all good for at least a year or so. Your input however is appreciated.

Hi! I'm thinking about getting the same laptop. What's your opinion on the display and the keyboard? How is battery life? I heard the fan noise is pretty bad even in idle and the lid is wobbly? Thanks in advance!

Hey man. I intended to respond to you last night when I read your post, since I want to help you out - I was just super tired and needed to recharge before being able to do so. It's an amazing, amazing machine. For the price it's unbelievably powerful. It's absolutely light years ahead of the previous machine I had. Regarding the display, wonderfully bright and crystal clear. The backlit keyboard is also awesome and super cool and makes me want to kick myself for not getting a machine with a backlit one much sooner. The machine is quite quiet and I don't even notice the fan. The previous machine I had used to blare the fan like a fucking fighter jet so this one runs cool and is overall very quiet by comparison. As for the lid, not loose at all - the machine is sturdy and well built. It feels like an expensive, strong and premium product. I'd highly recommend you opt for it since I think you'd be quite pleased with the machine. Hope this helps.

The i7 would not have been worth the extra money. You need to let that go already.

Sound advice man. And yeah you're right I should just let it go now. The machine is unbelievably fast and yeah you're right, spending an extra ~£150 for the more expensive model that even now is still out of stock probably wouldn't have been worth it with only a slight difference in speed. As I said to the poster above I am super happy with the machine overall and I think it'll be a year at the very least before I need something newer. Doom ran at like, barely 10fps on my previous AMD machine but this one just kills it with the GTX 1050. So I am content and happy with it. I do appreciate your constant input however. Thanks for making the effort to advise and help me out so consistently. Great thread you have here. Looking forward to the next one.

Ouch, this is not like restoring your system to Factory settings right?

A factory reset would reinstall the default apps, no? I had to do a reinstall because I'd deleted my recovery partition.

I believe in doing true clean installs though. It's painless and gets rid of all of the extra crap the OEMs include in our laptops.
I have an old laptop (from 2013, i3 4gb ram, some shitty nvidia gfx) and I want to change the HDD for an SSD.

How am I supposed to make the change? Easiest way? I mean, do I just copy the contents of the HDD (image) and put it in and SSD? I am actually afraid of losing my Windows License in the process (it came pre installed), I dont care if I need to reinstall all my stuff.

The Windows license shouldn't be in jeopardy with a simple storage change. I'd done it many times and just had to reactivate Windows.

Great thread you have here. Looking forward to the next one.

I break out into a cold sweat, as I realize that I haven't at all been preparing for the next thread.

Hey folks, I ran a Valley Benchmark with Ultra settings on my new laptop last night and got a score, but I dunno what it means in the grand scheme of things. Can anyone give me an idea if it's decent?

Defiance Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 7700HQ (2.8GHz, 3.8GHz Turbo)

All that really matters, is whether your 1070 scored in a relatively similar way to other 1070s.

A Google search should solve that.

So quick question guys. As you know from my previous posts I'm rocking a quad-core Intel Core i5 7300HQ with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 2GB and 8GB RAM. Super happy with the machine as it's lightning fast and the quickest, sturdiest and most reliable machine I've ever owned with the speed difference from my last machine being so extreme I'm kicking myself for not just saving up and upgrading earlier. So the question: when would be a good time to upgrade? I was thinking 6 - 12 months? Is that a decent time frame or will the tech I have be future proof for longer than that?

I'm just curious because at the moment the new Doom flies on this thing and I'm surpassing the system requirements for pretty much every game I'm remotely interested in on Steam (Max Payne 3, Wolfenstein etc.).

Is my tech good enough for longer than 12 months? Or is mid to late 2018 a good time to look for something new? Opinions would be appreciated!

Your tech is good enough as long as it plays the games you want to play. It really depends on that, because there are already games out that the 1050 won't handle very well.

Yes, you upgrade when something you want to play demands it, and not a moment sooner.

Buying a new gaming laptop, before the old one is obsolete for your requirements, is never financially sound decision making.

How do I stop my laptop from throttling games when its not plugged in the mains ?

You can't, because it's done to protect the battery. It throttles as no battery is going to survive trying to supply 100s of watts of power, like the AC adapter can.

The most you can do is go in Geforce Experience, and set Battery Boost to 60fps.

Can’t you just set prefer max performance in NV control panel?

Hey guys,

Perhaps not your usual kind of post but hopefully I can get lead in the right direction. Don't really need a gaming PC, I am all console but like Civ, indie games and other things for PC. My PC is what is below: + an ASUS GTX 560ti

GARK4

I would like a laptop instead. Now my PC is old so I have no doubt that laptops that can do more are quite cheap, but I have no idea! I know what this PC is capable of, I can struggle for SWTOR on max, Civ could run better, Sims 4 is fine, etc. It struggles with 4K video, it can be loud. I'm just trying to give you a profile of what I do, and would like to do easier. My PC was a budget gaming PC (I guess) but it is slowly becoming less so and more for downloads and transferring those to external devices, Sonarr and the like.

Lastly, if anyone could recommend something above and beyond my PC that they reckon will suffice (and well) if you could point me to something on CEX that would be amazing because I have a bunch of useless vouchers! I have about I have about £210 to spend there but if nothing like I'm after is available there, then I am happy to spend more.

I am just not particularly keen to spend £800 if I can get what I need with £400. If I have to, I have to! I don't need 4K screen or games, but you know..."not shit" would be nice.

Just to save you some time, I'm pretty sure the first thing you'll be asked by someone who knows what they're taking about is how much you're willing to spend.

So I’ll be transferring to one of two places next year for my job: Hong Kong or Japan (not sure of city yet but either Kyoto/Tokyo).

I’m definitely not shipping my PS4Pro or PC overseas so I will be selling both off before I go. I’ll buy a PS4 Slim once I get there as well as a smaller tv, but computer wise I’m looking at getting a laptop since I’ll be in anywhere from 10-18sqm.

I don’t really want to spend a ton since I use a iPad Pro as my actual computer so below $1000 but as cheap as possible really.

The main games I play aren’t super demanding: League of Legends, Visual Novels, Playerunknowns Battlegrounds. The only game that is demanding would be PUBG but hopefully that gets optimized.

Any suggestions? I’ll be coming from a 7600k/RX580 but as evidenced by the fact I’ll be going from a Pro to a Slim I don’t care about maxing everything.
Just bumping. Anybody have any suggestions?

Costco has a couple including Y520, I believe the Nitro 5, and a Dell Inspiron 7000(?) I don’t have to buy from Costco but it seems to be cheaper there on average.

I am still rocking my Acer V15 Nitro Black Edition with a 960M and i7. Still plays everything released up until today without issue on medium or high. I never play anything on low settings. Really solid laptop that doesn't look like a gaming laptop and isn't a brick to carry around.

But seems like the mobile card game has really advanced in the last year. I don't think I will upgrade until this one craps out on me.

Battery Boost is a general setting. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner, turn on Battery Boost, then set it to 60fps.

I literally just tested it to make sure it works, and the game I used is not on the list ohttps://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusVIII-15/f supported games.

Best you can do is drop all the graphical settings, since that's what Geforce Experience would do for you anyway.

BB has nothing to do with altering graphic settings. It just sets the fps cap you can achieve on battery, so if you set it to 60fps, your GPU won't downclock as hard when unplugged.

Flatly, you aren't going to find what you want for £400. The 560 Ti, as old as it is, still poops all over Intel iGPUs.

That CEX site is so hard to navigate, but I managed to find a Dell Inspiron with the GTX 960M, which is the mobile equivalent of the desktop GTX 750 Ti.

Buying elsewhere, the lowest GPU I'd go with is the new MX150, which is literally a desktop GT 1030. Something with the GTX 1050 is probably the ceiling of what you'd need.

MX150 option.

GTX 1050 option.

Just bumping. Anybody have any suggestions?

Sorry I missed your previous post somehow.

Does Costo have this Inspiron SKU, or anything similar? That still seems to be the best option below $1k USD.

If you want to max out the budget (plus a smidgen more), the Acer Predator Helios w/ GTX 1060 6GB is $1,049.99 right now.

Nah you’re good brother.

Unfortunately they do not, the only Inspiron they have is the 5000 series with a 1050 at $750.

I’ve always built desktops so I’m only familiar with desktop GPUs, I’m not seeing too awfully much difference between the 1050 & 1050ti in benchmarks for laptops on YouTube. Laptop wise I’ve always been a MacBook kind of guy.

Figured I would give some more information. The laptop would really be mostly used for PUBG and League and maybe some web browsing but I generally just use my 12.9 iPad Pro for browsing. When I move overseas I plan on getting rid of 90% of my stuff, just taking some clothes, and my PS4 Pro/Vita/iPad/iPhone with me. I figure I can take a laptop with me in my carryon with my PS4.

And one more thing, it will be minimum 6 months until I make this move. However I will be moving in to a small studio after my lease is up to save money prior to the transfer. So I have some time to make my decision. I know cards update very quickly, but I wouldn’t mind getting use to a laptop in the meantime before the move. Am I going to get a huge upgrade for the same money in the next 6-8 months?

Your tech is good enough as long as it plays the games you want to play. It really depends on that, because there are already games out that the 1050 won't handle very well.

Ah man, flashbacks to when I bought a Voodoo 3 3000 and Quake II flew on the thing at max settings and then Quake III just performed "okay" whilst Quake III Team Arena had performance issues. Think I was like, 15 at the time. I guess that's PC gaming for you.

I do appreciate your advice and input however. So far every game I'm interested in runs like a dream (particularly the new Doom). The machine destroys the system requirements for pretty much every other game I've looked in to (last-gen 360 releases like Max Payne 3, Tomb Raider 2013 and others games I missed out on).

I think a year or so at the minimum should be fine. Yet to come across a game I want that doesn't fly on this yet.

Yes, you upgrade when something you want to play demands it, and not a moment sooner.

Buying a new gaming laptop, before the old one is obsolete for your requirements, is never financially sound decision making.

More good advice here too. Thanks K.Jack. I think you're right, I'll wait to see if there's a game that demands an upgrade and then think about a new machine around then. As I stated above every game I want has been good so far. I'm surpassing the system requirements for everything I'm interested in and I'm yet to see a game I want that needs more than a GTX 1050, though of course it's inevitable there'll eventually be one that will, so I'll think about upgrading to a new machine when that happens.

Do appreciate the advice though guys. Thank you.

The sager 7950 is priced significantly higher than the 7850 configured at the same specs and it's only better in that it has a desktop 7700 cpu instead of the mobile version.

Max budget 500 (might be able to stretch to 600 but would be great if I got recommendations for both

Max size no issue

Usage planned
Want it to run csgo and dota2 . I don't care about using high settings so low/lowest is fine . At 1024x724 etc I would like def locked higher than 60 fps for csgo always and always more than 30 in dota even late game mega creeps time etc. if possible obviously would prefer even higher fps

Regular browsing some basic programming , latex . Netflix.

Edit : if the budget is not enough what's the minimum I would need ?

I've had it for a week now and its great. Runs everything I throw at it.

That is a GOOD looking laptop. I can see a future where I ditch the powerful desktop for a thin & light laptop w/ a thunderbolt enclosure. The future is bright and interesting for computing

Hi everyone
I don't know if this is the right topic but I have some question and hope you could help me:
I recently bought a new laptop.
The laptop it's not a specs monster (AMD A10 9600p with integrated R5 + dedicated R7 m440 graphics + 8GB RAM) but according to some videos found on YouTube I can play some games (even some 2016-2017 at lowest settings).
Since I'm new to pc gaming I don't know how to use a keyboard + mouse (always been a console gamer) do you recommend me to buy one of those gaming mice (what's the difference between those and standard ones?) or just buy a controller ?
Thank you everyone :)

mice tracking speed matters . You can find a regular one with a good sensor . Basically unless you play competitive fpses it's not worth the extra cost ...

Essentially rule of thumb is do you flick your mouse fast enough that the tracking messes up.

Edit other factors come in just as input lag or extra programmable buttons but essentially those become valid only if you play at a high enough level (doesn't need to be professional level just high enough where it becomes convenient etc ) .

The flicking is a factor if you use low sensitivity while
Playing fpses which may seem alien to console gamers but it helps a lot with long range aiming so once you get into that then it's a valid investment (and a decent sized mousepad)

I have an X230 and love it. I haven't delved into it yet, but I know that the X230(unsure with X230T) can run eGPUs through its expresscard slot, in case you want to run more demanding titles. Would probably be limited to a 750ti or similar.

Glad you've been satisfied with yours! There's something about the chunky, businesslike look of the thing I really enjoy, and for what I paid (around $235 USD including express shipping) I think the specs don't seem half bad.

I've actually read a little about the eGPU capability via expresscard, though honestly I doubt I'll be playing anything heavy enough to warrant going that route. That being said, I am pretty curious about how games of the PS3/360 era could be made to run...

Playing fpses which may seem alien to console gamers but it helps a lot with long range aiming so once you get into that then it's a valid investment (and a decent sized mousepad)

Thank you so much for replying :)
So I could stick just with a standard mouse...
And if I want to buy a budget controller for playing what I could buy? I don't want to spend a lot
Thank you :)

I'll let the others answer on keyboards and controllers . My mouse and headsets were the only parts I invested in higher end stuff .

I can answer the peripheral question at least, I’ll tell you what I tell everybody that I build computers for.

Starting off you can literally just go with a $10 M/KB combo especially if you aren’t used to using them for games. They work perfectly fine unless you are being competitive.

Then I generally tell people to move up to a “gaming” mouse from there but one in the $30-40 range. If you want to experiment with a mechanical keyboard but don’t want to spend lots of money for a good one, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to grab a cheap $30 Chinese mechanical to make sure you like it.

Controller wise I would just say go with the XBO controller, you can get them for around $40 but the build quality is worth it.

Headset wise if you want an actual headset just go for the Cloud Stinger if you don’t want to spend a lot.

That is a GOOD looking laptop. I can see a future where I ditch the powerful desktop for a thin & light laptop w/ a thunderbolt enclosure. The future is bright and interesting for computing

It really feels nice in the hand. It can get a little hot if you are playing a game for 4 hours but if you put the fans on max (which is loud) it will cool off really really fast.

Been playing rise of the tomb raider and the game looks great. I have everything maxed out though I lowered the AA a little because I wanted a slightly better frame rate.

Though that game is odd. 90% of the time I'll be at over 50 fps then it dips randomly.

Thank you both
Regarding the controller: if I buy a cheap one and I plug it on the USB port, it will detected as a x360 controller? I really don't want to spend 40-50€ for a controller now lol
And these controller are compatible with steam ?
Thanks :)

Location Usa

Max budget 500 (might be able to stretch to 600 but would be great if I got recommendations for both

Max size no issue

Usage planned
Want it to run csgo and dota2 . I don't care about using high settings so low/lowest is fine . At 1024x724 etc I would like def locked higher than 60 fps for csgo always and always more than 30 in dota even late game mega creeps time etc. if possible obviously would prefer even higher fps

Regular browsing some basic programming , latex . Netflix.

Edit : if the budget is not enough what's the minimum I would need ?
Any advice ?

Am I going to get a huge upgrade for the same money in the next 6-8 months?

The GPUs used in laptops and desktops are identical now, so waiting gets you Coffee Lake and Volta.

hey guys my laptop just broke and i'm looking for a new one. it will mostly be used for watching netflix and that type of stuff.
i play most games on PS4, but there are PC only games i'd like to play like Cuphead, Dviinity 2, PUBG. price range is around $1000 canadian, willing to go up to around $1500. i don't know much about computers, but people suggested some laptops...

With a $1k budget, you should be looking for a GTX 1050.

I have a dell xps 15

How will upgrading the ram to 16GB benefit me gaming wise ?

It won't.

Any advice ?

Find the cheapest laptop with an MX150, and go with that.If those are too expensive, drop down to a 940MX.

Nevermind, I forgot that even even the 1050 laptops start around $1300-1400 CAD. Ridiculous.

The best cheap PC controller is probably the Logitech F310. Supports both XInput and DInput, and also has a DPAD/Left Stick toggle for platformers, shmups, fighters, etc.

Do you have older console controllers? There's often a way to use those on PC, and sometimes that way is free.

I need to update my computer but I am not sure what to do:

I have a Lenovo G580, basic laptop, i3 (2nd or 3rd gen, not sure), 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, some basic geforce card. I dont play on it, but I am feeling it a bit slow to open apps... I usually have Chrome (lots of tabs at once), some PDFs, Word, Spotify and RStudio (R language programming) open at all time when I use it (I only use it at university).

So first of all I want to get an 240gb ssd, sata3 as I found online. 87 euros on this Sandisk is fine?

edit:

for the RAM, I can:

add 4gb (total 8, but not in dual channel)
add 2x4gb (8, dual channel)
add 8gb (total 12gb)
add 2x8gb (16gb, dual channel)

I think 16 is too much, but I am not sure which of the other 3 options to choose. Max Mhz supported by my 1333 if that matters.
