2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Anyone have any experience with the Y510p SLI driver install process when ordering the second graphics card separately from the original config?

The instruction manual says I need to install the SLI card, install the new driver, then uninstall the SLI card and re-install the old driver (or something to that effect, I don't have the booklet in front of me). After which there should be no more driver installs.

...But that sounds rather wonky and unnecessary.

GTX 800M series officially announced.

GeForce GTX 800M notebooks are equipped with our latest Kepler and Maxwell GPUs, improving performance by up to 60% in comparison to previous-generation models. GeForce GTX 800M GPUs also increase efficiency, giving you more performance while using less power, something that’s particularly important when taking your notebook on the road.
With today’s launch of the GeForce GTX 800M Series, notebook gamers can get up to twice as much game time when unplugged, while still receiving the 30+ FPS experience they demand.

To achieve this feat Battery Boost adjusts the power needs of the GPU, CPU, and memory automatically to deliver a user-targeted frame rate (30 FPS by default). Each notebook component is adjusted in real-time, maximizing efficiency, and ensuring buttery smooth gameplay, even when the action heats up during high-intensity moments. If the gamer demands faster frame rates or longer battery time, Battery Boost can be adjusted using a simple slider via GeForce Experience.
Today, with the release of the new GeForce GTX 800M series, we can confirm the imminent launch of mobile GPU ShadowPlay support, enabling notebook gamers to capture, share, and broadcast their gameplay.

That sounds abnormally convoluted. Just uninstall your GPU driver, then insert the new card, then reinstall the driver, then do the SLI driver.

The 860M and 870M are the only interesting cards.

Oh and finally ShadowPlay yesssss.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that.

Thanks for providing a more logical and straightforward approach.

Well, I like this development (the tremendous reduction in bulk)... what do you think on the three "Ultra Light GeForce GTX 800M Notebooks" shown in that link? The 14" form factor with a 870M and a 1800p display on the Razor one looks like it might be worth a few thoughts.

That image is actually funny, but wouldn't expect any less from nvidia.
if you haven't seen either machine live, look how the USB ports are smaller on the right

Man that must be a typo. There's no way the Razer Blade can hold the 870M. That thing is a GTX 680M (desktop GTX 670), just with 192-bit bus and 8 less ROPs, plus overclocked to hell. It'd burn a whole in a slim factor, 14 inch laptop.

They must mean an 860M.

So what's the difference between the 860m,860m and the 780m?

Interesting, I didn't realize that. But looking at articles, it does seem to not be a typo. For some weird reason the new 14" model sports the 870M, and the new 17" model only goes up to the 860M. I never really saw their laptops before, but it's sorta interesting that the 17" model sports a second screen nearby the keys that doubles as a touch pad. I'm guessing the 14" having the 870M is part of the reason they're priced nearly the same, despite the 17" having a second screen in it? They also claim the 14" model has the best IPS panel in existence... it's a rather well sell on the laptop imo. Definitely has me considering it, but I'm in no big rush.

Either way, it's got to be the most advanced / most portable gaming laptop on the market, being just 14" and having the 1800p screen and the 870M. Be curious to see how it does while gaming, like you say, heat levels may be a concern.

Edit: Here's another article with a benchmark or two, it really destroys the Mac Book Pro (no surprise really).

If they put a regular touchpad on the Blade Pro, it'd be the best gaming laptop on the market.

Did you look at the product page? The 14" model does have a regular touchpad as far as I can see... and it also has a 10-point capacitive multi-point touch screen, which is a nice bonus imo, as I see a lot of laptops are still sold without touch screens which puzzles me in this day and age.

Edit: Oh, the Pro refers to the 17" model? Well I wouldn't expect a 17" laptop to be the best gaming laptop on the market without sporting an SLI setup of some sort and weighing 10+ lbs. The 17" model not having the 870M also probably keeps it from going close to that title as well I'd imagine. Though the reviews do mention the weird screen/touchscreen thing they do actually works well, so I don't know if I'd be entirely opposed to it on principal unless there's other draw backs.

Has the quality of the SkyFire III?

If you mean the Skyfire III 17" on PCSpecialist, its based on the GT70 2OD I was told (As I needed drivers for it and they told me to get them from MSI's website for that product)

Doesn't run hot at all actually, one of the most coolest laptops I've used, the feature that easily impressed me the most. Havent even needed to use the cooling pad for it and if I do, the fan at turbo speed seems plenty enough, ha ha.

Also seeing the 880M got announced...how does it compare to the 780M?

From the looks of it, it seems its only the clock speed thats different...? Couldnt you just overclock a 780M and it'd be an 880M? (Not that I really need to OC it yet snd don't really want to)

Know what, I really meant for mass market appeal. Of course there are those like me, who take the biggest and most powerful single GPU machine as possible. But the majority of people I come across just want a Windows version of the Macbook Pro. Razer has achieved that form factor and style perfectly, except they're turning people away because of the gimmicky Switchblade. "If it just had a regular touchpad", if a quote I hear regularly.

As it stands, Razer is going to lose sales to MSI's upcoming GS60 Ghost and GS70.

The 14" is pretty dope though, and they are going to move units, if the 870M doesn't explode that is.

I've pre-ordered a new blade. The display on the 14" 2013 Blade was of such poor quality that I returned the laptop.

I'm not entirely excited about the prospect of gaming at non-native resolution, and I wonder how the 870m will fare in this form factor. Other than that, the refreshed 14" looks like a great piece of equipment.

The thing is, once you hit dpi where you can non longer see pixels on the screen, like an 1800p display on a 14" monitor (I mean my 24" desktop display is only 1200p, this is like 2x the pixels at 1/2 the size), scaling issues should become significantly less relevant, in theory anyway. Scaling sucks on LCDs because the ppi is so awful imo.

At worst you should be about to just run at 1/2 resolution (what is that, 2000x900, still basically the same as a normal 14" screen?) and get a crisp image since it is exactly 2:1 when scaling to fullscreen.

Definitely curious to hear your impressions though. Sounds like they addressed the screen issue from the old model, going by the product page.

The Blade looks really awesome, but I'm not recommending it until we get temps on that GTX 870M. It's a 100W GPU yo, how can the 14" slim chassis cool such a thing?

I hope that you're correct about the DPI. I owned a retina MBP for a bit, and scaling issues weren't as apparent as on my 27" 1080P display, where anything but non-native is garbage. I like your argument about PPI; that must be what plays into the perception of horrible IQ when scaling on relatively low PPI displays.

There are a couple of laptops that have caught my eye. First, was the Alienware 14. I'd seen one in the wild and had been impressed by it's build quality. The second, is the Lenovo y510p SLI w/ 755m. Third, and most recently. the Lenovo Y50.

Any help is appreciated. I am, truly, unsure of which direction to go. Left, right, wait? I'm new this and it's boggling the mind.

Thanks!

After my current laptop died I decided to join gaming laptop Gaf. Didn't buy purely for gaming since portability was my main concern as a student. But I finally have a laptop that at least can run recent games. I went with the MSI GE40 20C-253NL Dragon Eyes. Which could be an interesting model for the poster above me considering his wishes.

I'm not sure how much it is going to cost in the US, but the MSI GS60 coming out later this month early April is gorgeous and fits your needs. 15", less than 2cm thick, less than 2KG. Price wise I was told it should be starting around £1200 - if you can extrapolate a US price from that somehow.

Many thanks to the two posters above. I took a look at both models. The GS60 is a bit out of range. Coming in around ~$1800 all considered.

However, the GE40 seems like it would be a good fit and is comfortably within the range of what I'm able to afford.

I'll continue investigating and will circle back here for any additional recommendations. I appreciate the kindness.

I'd wait, as laptop manufacturers are about to refresh all of their lines with Nvidia's 800M series.

With the low end of your budget, be on the look out for laptops which will sport the upcoming GTX 860M. At $1.5k, you can have the GTX 870M.

Hey folks... what would be the closest thing to the Alienware m11x these days? Just after an 11" that packs a punch, with a decent resolution, keyboard and whatnot. I have a bad back, so I prefer not to lug around anything heavier.

I know this is a little outdated, but how would I fare with this setup on a custom m11x R3?

CPU: Intel Core i7-2637M
GPU: NVIDIA 2GB GT540m
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1333 MHZ
HDD: Samsung EVO 1TB SSD

I'm not looking for an absolute killer machine, just an 11" netbook that can run some games from the past generation at low-mid settings and the average indie games.

Impressions? Thanks again!

Well, you'll need to find something with an Intel HD 4600 of HD 5000.

What's the budget again?

Without extensive searching, I'm pretty certain that you will have a hard time surpassing the AW's power, in an 11" footprint. The best I can think, is that you can try to find a used Sager NP6110 (Clevo W110ER). It last came with a quad core i7 and the GT 650M.

So I'm a student in the UK and now I am needing a new laptop.

I could go up to £1,000 but obviously the cheaper the better.

I'm not that bothered about resolution and FPS, as long as its smooth I'm happy with 720p and 30 fps. Similarly size doesnt really matter.

I want something that will at least be able to play most games for a while but most of my gaming will be done on my ps4. Ideally I'd like to be able to run Titanfall well.

I've been looking at: http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-ide...b-ram-1tb-8gb-ssd-15-6-black/p1101279#default

but the lack of a disc drive worries me because I like owning music CDs (yeah I'm wierd like that). I've heard it has an ultradrive but I have little clue what that is or how it works.

Thanks for any advice.

So I have some bad news and some more bad news. The bad news, is that Titanfall is not particularly well optimised despite being a source game.

I have a 680m and, on a mixture of high and medium settings at 1920x1080, I fluctuate from 40-60FPS. Still better than Xbox One performance but not ideal.

I lied about the second bad news though. If you go to a site like PCSpecialist or Overclockers UK (the two best resellers for gaming laptops), you'll find a high end machine with a quad core and 870m for around £1000. That'll out-perform any next gen console for now and let you play all games out there at decent settings and full HD.

Okay guys. I was wondering if this sounded pretty good. I hate Alienware, but I found out that the military gets a discount on these things. So I decided to see how much of a deal I could get.

This is what I'm looking at.

Operating System - Windows 8.1 Pro (64Bit) English
Memory - 32GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz
Video Card - Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 880M graphics with 16GB total (2x8GB) GDDR5 - NVIDIA SLI® Enabled
Hard Drive - 256GB mSATA SSD Boot + 1TB 5400RPM SATA 6Gb/s
Processor - Overclocked Intel® Core™ i7-4900MQ processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.0GHz w/ Intel® Turbo Boost)

Regular price w/tax is $4774

Discounted price w/tax is $3748

I don't think their's a retailer out there that can give me as much power out of a laptop for the price. I hate to give Dell credit.

As a general rule, how decent are MSI laptops considered these days? I've gotten rid of my Macbook Air and have been considering replacing it with something like the (not yet released) MSI GS60 Ghost. Personally, portability is my biggest concern (the reason I used an Air for so long), and the new Razer Blades are a little too much out of my price range (which is $1500-$1700). The Ghost seems to hit that sweet spot of size, weight and components that make it viable to actually carry around and use to play games, though I'm guessing the battery life (even when not gaming) will probably leave something to be desired.

Are the MSI owners in this thread happy with their purchases? Any heating or reliability issues that I should know about?

I don't think any of the MSI owners here (probably ten or so of us, dating back to the old thread) have voiced any serious concerns.

The GS60 definitely looks like a nice laptop. I'll be sure to keep the thread updated when the reviews start rolling in, which should be soon. In the meantime, here's an unboxing done by GentechPC.

I had an MSI CX620 for about 3,5 years. A laptop as basic as they come but it served me well for the time I had it. One problem I had was that the fan started to make really loud noises and it wouldn't stop until I turn it off for a good ten minutes. That started to occur during the third year I had it in use. Build quality was great, it's still looking good and it still opens smoothly.

And now I have an MSI GE40 Dragon Eyes since a week. Have yet to play a game on it though :p

If you never cleaned out the fans and heatsinks, it's easy to diagnose the issue.

I had it looked at but the problem returned after a while. But I was going to replace the laptop anyways so I didn't care much. That laptop had a habit of running hot anyways. I used it quite extensively.

Wait until we find out whether 20nm Maxwell is coming this year. 2x performance per watt is a game changer.

This is news we'll hopefully get within the next couple months.

I've bought a MSI GS70 in October and really like it. It is quite lightweight especially for its size. The performance is decent. The gpu does heat up a bit but the top part gets hot not the bottom so your hands will stay comfortable. I strain the cpu as well with a virtual linux, running data mining algorithms for research while surfing, word processing etc. and I am happy to say it works quite well after keeping it on for 3 days straight.

Hey Guys, recently bought a Lenovo G510 laptop with an Intel 4600 integrated graphics, i5-4200mu and 8GB of ram. I know it's not really a gaming PC but even so what kind of performance could I expect generally speaking?
