Angry Joe Destiny 2 Review

This MMO discussion.... Who knew this was a thread about things we know nothing about. It is not a MMO, end of discussion.

As for the review, Joe does have a lot of valid points. I stopped playing Destiny 1 after their first expansion. Mostly because of their shit; "pay me 80% of the last game price so I can offer you 1h of content".

The part with the AI.. really, they didn't fix that shit? During a lot of strikes in D1 vanilla, you could just stay on one spot and keep the reticle on a pixel, and kill every damn enemy. Massive disappointment.

I plan still to buy the PC version. But if I see their crap DLC tactics again, I refuse to support Bungie anymore.

I don't understand how a game with 30-60 hours of fun gameplay, some fairly deep mechanics, and beautiful settings merits a "D" rating - which is what a 60 is. Throw on Crucible, monthly events, and a raid, and such a score becomes farcical.

He is demonstrating the distinction between "thing isn't very good," and "I don't like thing." You don't have to like something to recognize its quality.

If someone went around giving Halo 3 a 6/10 merely because they just don't like shooters, that would be intellectually dishonest, intentionally overlooking the achievements of the game.

Joe doesn't like Destiny. That doesn't mean Destiny 2 is not an incredible iteration on the Destiny format.

Its clear Joe doesn't like Destiny. In fact, he actually reviewed Destiny 2 while streaming it.. Couple notes:

1) During cutscenes, he would call out donations + make jokes and not even pay attention to the story

2) Complained that the game was too hard in areas where it said "Re-spawning Restricted"

3) Doesn't use any of the movement abilities that Bungie actually gives you, but instead stands still and shoots and misses half the shots THEN calls the game boring

I respect his review, but do I take it seriously? Hell no. He was complaining about the game almost the first or second mission in. Its clear Destiny isn't for him and thats cool. Not saying destiny is a 10/10 for me, but its definitely higher than a 6 and a huge step up from the first one.

He should stick to movie reviews IMO.

maybe if you watch the video you get why he gave it that score?

perfectly legitimate review. He put a lot of time into it.

When I heard about the 7 hour raid to end up with nothing, I was like "this game sounds like hot garbage". Also he's right about the level 20 cap before you'd want to seriously considering using the expendable resources.

Vanillalite

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
maybe if you watch the video you get why he gave it that score?

Score seems arbitrary compared to his complaints. It also felt like he did the classic starts at a 10 and goes down from there.

I think he has some valid points, but fuck do I hate having to assign a number to shit like this.

budgets are actually shrinking as they maximize profits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFKnv1YzI3k

Shhhhh! We need people to think that game publishers are on their last legs and only loot boxes can save them.

I'm watching that video now and it doesn't actually seem to say budgets are shrinking (they're not)? It just says that Activision uses tax loopholes to spend less on taxes.

Fake edit: I got to the part where he states that operating expenses went down for Activision since 2009 and they posted more profits. I mean, yeah, they went from spending a shitton on Blizzard to the peak of the CoD craze as Blizzard saw a resurgence through Hearthstone, HotS and Overwatch, plus introduced Destiny as another CoD-sized success (not to mention Skylanders over the last few years). They also killed off their licensing business and any smaller projects not directly tied to their big franchises (except for the occasional THPS5).

Maybe they started making oodles of money thanks to not paying taxes. Or maybe the vast majority of that increase is due to having mega-successful franchises that also happen to cost way more these days to make. But don't let me get in the way of the publisher hate, it doesn't matter that games now adjusted for inflation are cheaper than they've ever been despite costing more than ever before.

Score makes sense to me, but that's just because I don't get games like destiny. Multiplayer was fun, but the campaign/co-op and raids etc have no appeal to me.

Like I said, im fine with his opinion and can care less as he's just one reviewer... just stating that while he put a lot of effort into making his review video, he put very low effort in actually learning the game. Thanks for your insightful post though.

At the end of the day, destiny is a game you have to try for yourself to see if you like it or not

The only game that had "good AI" in the last decade was Alien Isolation, and that got them people bitching up a storm and deconstructing it where it didn't hold up as well.

Destiny AI is better than Halo, but it's also doing what it needs to do for a group shooter. Split between 40-50 enemies on screen at any one time at some points, I haven't thought "man, if only these grunts were more smart".
Destiny AI is nowhere close to halo like what in the world?

One thing I love about Joe's reviews are the passion. Dude has strong opinions about stuff and backs up his views with fairly in depth commentary. I don't always agree with him but he makes it fun and sometimes (as is the case with this Destiny 2 review) he gives me a different way of looking at how games could be better.

Sounds like you're saying he's correct and that the AI is bad.

No that's not what I'm saying. And that's obvious don't be smarmy about it.

I'm saying Destiny's design would not be possible with super aggressive smart enemy AI. You're not beating 25 Cabal at once if they all are as smart as Legendary Elites from Halo.

How can we take you seriously when you just told us Bungie knew the AI sucked so they made up for it with a lot of numbers?

And he definitely didn't dock the game over the epic music, he was just being funny. He addresses so many other real issues.

What's weird about this is that there's literally nothing wrong with simply saying, as some have: "Many of these criticisms may be true. I still enjoy the game."

Seriously? The man created a 45-minute video about a game that has major flaws, of course, some of what he said is true. That doesn't change the fact that I think a 6 is straight up wrong. Personally, I'd give the game an 8.

By my knowledge he's used to KB+M controls at this point compared to game pads. Skill isn't crucial to critique. Although I do agree to a point that the streaming is a bit harmful for review context. A cursory glance and he's constantly distracted by the donations and showiness of it all. Like the introduction for failsafe and Cayde was spent looking for an air horn sound effect while other Joe talked over the dialogue.

The only thing is adopts from borderlands is being a FPS. I've dumped 100s of hours into both, so I can say there's not much in common there besides being a FPS and being able to COOP. Borderlands just doesn't have a social aspect, at all.

Hate to be this cynical, but hate clicks do pay bills.

Destiny is still... controversial, and a small and very vocal minority puts 110% into sitting around and tearing it down for whatever reason, valid or not.

Jim Sterling's review was much more measured, including his pointing out of the microtransaction BS. AG just seems like he keeps trending towards these videos that get clicks and offer an alternative point of view that he half ass supports instead of a real critique.

AJ has put 45min of review poiting out a lot of things that seems valid to me. How is that not a real critique?

The fact that he complains about difficulty spike repeatedly on stream while reviewing the game when he can't even complete basic platform jumps and/or put his crosshair on the enemy properly. Either way he made some good points in his video, but it was clear from the second mission he didn't like the game. Destiny just aint for him.

I'm enjoying the game so much and see it as a huge step up from the first one but I can't score it more than 8.5/10 tbh, 6/10? that's too much but it's his opinion and I respect it

A great sequel needs a lot more than QoL refinements and Bungie can do better.

which is mostly an example of him showing you that the AI isn't good. Like even at close range the AI just flies away.

also can we be real, Destiny 1 was not a high bar. The bar was set so low at launch that you could stub your toes. I know people say it got better, but unless you bought the expansions, it was still just a few strikes and a raid.

No he does not, it looks like he's playing while only using one hand. He uses an auto rifle like it's a scout rifle (tapping seriously? Just hold the damn trigger). Has no awareness of his enviroment at all, fails at doing the most basic movements in the game, aims like he does not have control over his thumbs..

To be fair, it's only those clips that I'm judging and I know Joe is no Destiny player, so I can understand where he's coming from (and I'm not some Destiny god before anyone thinks I feel like I'm better than him). Plus, he reviews and plays lots of games and is probably used to M+KB controls so he may not have enough time to "master" the game's mechanics.

Him playing bad is not a valid counter argument against his score so I don't agree with the user you quoted but to say he seems to play normally in those clips? No, not at all, he seems confused.

No salt here homie; just providing context on the "difficulty spike" he kept mentioning during his review stream. I can care less about what he gave the score as I don't personally let other peoples opinion sway my decision to purchase or enjoy a game :) Like I said.. after watching a session of his game play review on stream last week.. he should stick to movie reviews or not review FPS games.

I can agree that the game would be different with less and smarter enemies. That doesn't change the fact that the AI in the game is bad. When the game launches on PC next month, I wonder how easy it will be. As a PC player can probably have close to 90% critical hit rate.

How can an opinion be wrong? So what if you would give it a 8. Give us a review to justify it then maybe?

The problem is not with Joe, rather it's with the game. The aiming and gunplay feels just as sluggish and not fun as it did with Destiny (2014) for a 30fps FPS!

As a gamer who loves shooters since Doom in the early 90's, Halo 3 on the 360 was not my first time playing a Halo game but it was the first iteration I owned... I played a few missions of the campaign and... it was meh...

Objectively, I don't know what you think Halo 3 brought to the genre, I remember critics raving about the sequences with the larger ships... but from a few hours with it I couldn't see what was so appealing at all. That's being completely honest. I don't get it, doesn't mean it's not good, but I just don't see what the fans see. Same with Destiny.

Let's not pretend the story is some award winning caliber. It's better than the original but it's still really really bad. I actually agree with Joe on this. The same way the first one was just ok, this is similar. The adventure designs were meh at best (kill some enemies near here to get drops, then go to y place and kill waves ok done)

Yeah, there's nothing there in the videos to warrant that post.

The first two vids are mainly showing the horrible damage drop off of your attacks as enemies get too far away. Then one video is him showing, as you say, how harmless an enemy is due to it's weak attack and shitty AI. And all the rest are of him just walking around and mainly focusing on the party chat.

Also this just underscores another reason why I hate scores.

It's a better game than D1, but it's got it's flaws and own issues. The scores for both games being the same makes this a weird discussion as I can see how you'd want to give it a 6 but I don't see how this isn't a better game than 1.

Having to put a score on shit just exasterbates discussion on the game.

It's like 3 years later ?

Of course the market expectation has changed.
A 6/10 in 2014 is not the same 6/10 on 2017 ..that's my opinon anyway.
Just like destiny improved during those 3 years , our expectations have too.
It's not unreassonnable to give 2 games the same score , even if you acknowledge that the sequel improved things.

SgtCobra

While D2's story is better than the one from the first game it is not something that could dramatically benefit the game's score.

The aiming and gunplay feels just as sluggish and not fun as it did with Destiny (2014) for a 30fps FPS!
This is something I agree with, it seems they lowered the aim assist all across the board and the hit registration seems iffy too. Then there's the lowered stability most guns have compared to their D1 counterparts.

He is demonstrating the distinction between "thing isn't very good," and "I don't like thing." You don't have to like something to recognize its quality.

Joe doesn't like Destiny. That doesn't mean Destiny 2 is not an incredible iteration on the Destiny format.

A review is inherently subjective. Not all of the things you've listed are objectively fun to everybody.

I acknowledge that GTA V is a well made video game, but I wouldn't give it over a 5/10 in my personal review of the game because I just don't like those kinds of games. There are probably people out there like me, and maybe that opinion would be valuable to them. I don't think the only valuable opinion about anything (games, music, etc) should be coming from people that actively like it. A different perspective is always welcomed by me, even if I disagree with it or don't find it personally valuable.

The same thing could be said about people liking Destiny 2 though.

People like Destiny 2. That doesn't mean that Destiny is an incredible iteration on the Destiny format. That's not something that's objectively true or false, it comes down to opinion. So, while you are free to disagree with this opinion, I just feel like you're not really going anywhere with your statement.

but that missing 4 points is that "room for improvement", yes they've made a game better than D1, but theres so much more they could've done. like less or no micro transaction, or a better story, better AI, make lower level loot more meaningful, more PVP options (like 6v6), FOV slider, and etc.

That could work for every game though. People are never satisfied with what is given at launch and thats fine. You could always improve a game repeatedly and it will never reach perfection.. its an endless cycle. Most of the points you made are opinion based as they are not a 100% necessity..

after watching those clips i can see why he doesn't like the game. he's actual garbage. when i'm shit at things i don't enjoy them as much as when i'm successful, so i understand it. it makes sense now why he "was doing the raid for 7 hours and got nothing". i assume he cleared a single encounter and didn't get a drop. unfortunately you have finish things to be rewarded for them.

A review, upon which others will rely for purchase decisions, should marry the reviewers' subjectivity with his ability to discern the objectively assessed accomplishments of the media in question.

For instance, it is fair to say "I do not like the Godfather." However, it is actually false to say "The Godfather is a poorly-written, poorly-acted schlockfest," based upon universally accepted filmmaking standards.

You can recognize quality without liking it.

I don't like fighting games, like, at all. But never would I give an accomplished fighting game a D rating - I would strive to figure out what quality looks like, and judge that.

But that's why he said he would give GTAV 5/10 - recognizing it's technical achievement and competency - and not 1/10 because he personally doesn't like those sort of games.

That could work for every game though. People are never satisfied with what is given at launch and thats fine. You could always improve a game repeatedly and it will never reach perfection.. its an endless cycle. Most of the points you made are opinion based as they are not a 100% necessity..

but both you and I are not asking for perfection. you're saying it deserves a higher score, and I am just saying saying it needs to improve a few things to get there. Also its not like D2 is not well received, it has an 85 on meta critic. And you're right the points I made are opinion based, I am not a game designer/developer, I am just making suggestions based on what I ve enjoyed from other games and its not like I am asking for anything extraordinary either.

I'm simply saying I don't agree with Joe's review + score. The game can improve in a lot of areas.. I don't disagree with that. This thread was made for his review in particular and its a place for discussion but some people seem to get salty about that (Not talking about you). After watching his stream a couple times last week, I already knew he was going to give it a low score. I agree with some of his points he made, but overall I disagree with his score.. as he has given 5 or 6's to games in the past that deserve a 2 or 3, or 5 or 6's to games that deserve a 7 or 8. At the end of the day, its only one guys opinion out of millions.

Strange that Destiny was lauded for its gunplay in the first place then.

Less lauded and more its "saving grace" Destiny's gunplay was good but its not like it was the best thing ever.

perfectly legitimate review. He put a lot of time into it.

When I heard about the 7 hour raid to end up with nothing, I was like "this game sounds like hot garbage". Also he's right about the level 20 cap before you'd want to seriously considering using the expendable resources.

Wait...the raid takes 7 hours to complete?
