CAVE STORY FOR WIIWARE!

IGN's videos are up, but I think the last one might be messed up: it's only available as a download for Insiders when the others are all normal. :\

I know the music is still technically "work in progress," but if it stays like this I'll just keep the old music while using the new graphics. I hope there's just something wrong with the video, because some of the tunes are literally painful... like, screeching ear-bleeding painful.

Judging from the staticky noises, the music is clearly not finished.

Why did they change the text to Arial though? They really ought to have a text-change option. I know it's supposed to be easy-read and all, but it kind of doesn't jive - the game needs a retro, SNES-type font.

My goodness, what have they done to the music? I didn't mind the remix of "Moonsong" on the website, but this is just terrible. I sincerely hope that this music is only temporary.

Mimiga Village and Balrog's theme in particular got pretty mutilated.

Wow, that music literally sounds like original black and white gameboy music. Not that GB music can't be cool, but it's below the target, somewhat.

I'm waiting for Nicalis' inevitable blog post about this. It's unimaginable that someone actually composed that and thought it was good. There must be some kind of sound glitch.

Why would they even release those videos with the music sounding like that and the text being too large for the text box? Seriously.

It doesn't sound to me like that's new music at all. It's the Wii game trying to emulate the original music, and failing. Just a normal early alpha build, nothing to get worked up about.

Damn, I always though the main character was facing forward! @_@
Watching him killing enemies while looking at me seems weird...

I still don't get it. All the other characters were facing the same 3/4 view. Why would the main character be facing sideways?

I don't like the jaw of the new robot though. It makes him look like an old robot. :lol

Well obviously, but if the initial download only gives you the main game and they want you to pay extra for each new feature they add then they can fuck off.

i think the creator of this game is allowed a couple of fucking dollars. how many years has he been giving his stuff away for free now?

I don't see what that has to do with DLC, he's going to get paid regardless. The main issue is that DLC is a fucking horrible pricing model that almost always results in consumers getting raped.

That's assuming the creator gets money from DLC. Speaking of DLC, fuck it. Unless Cave Story is like five bucks, then I'll be somewhat more accepting.

I do not see where the problem is. We have Megaman 9 with awesome DLC that doesn't impede in the least on the enjoyment to be had from playing the main game. I don't buy MM9 DLC since I'm still exploding away at the main game, but apparently the better players get their moneys' worth from the endless/heroic/etc modes. So, everybody's happy, especially the publisher. If they manage to pull that off I'm happy.

Why is DLC a horrible pricing model? I think it certainly depends on the content and price, don't you?

It's a shame that people are freaking out over DLC. I would rather see the game available at the lowest possible cost, so as many people can experience as possible, and then have extras available for those people that spend ten hours or more with the game and would like to expand upon that experience for a small fee.

It's not as though there is content missing.

I misread it as that at first too. It took me a while to adjust when I realised I was seeing it wrong.

On another note, I really wish Nifflas wouldn't use fanart to promote the game. :(

Wow, people are incredibly cheap when it comes to downloadable games. Seriously, this guy deserves to get paid, DLC or not, and if this were a full PSP or DS release you would be paying 30 bucks anyways. Learn to support games you like. It's not that hard.

why are you people talking about that and not this

They will choose a good artist to prmopte the game because no one on their team is a good one, what is actually wrong with that?

She looks... happy. :D Also, a bit on the meaty side somehow. Holidays got her too, huh?
Man, I really can't wait for this.

MTV’s Stephen Totilo put together a short list of Wii games he’s looking forward to for 2009. The list of five games includes Sin and Punishment 2, MadWorld and Punch-Out!! Also on the list is Wii Sports Resort; these are all some pretty notable games for the Wii. The fifth game on the list is Cave Story! We’re happy that it has made the list and honored to be in such good company.

Read the whole story at MTV: The Nintendo Wii Games We’re Most Excited For In 2009. Thanks Stephen!

I think the original artwork by Pixel would have been more appropriate. Even if they used the super pixelated images from the end of the game, blown up, it would be been pretty cool.
Yeah I saw that, IGN also used a fan art for one of the updates.

But do you blame them? there is no official traditinal art for the game, this type of art that is used to promote the game and the characters.

I swear I saw an update that said they wanted a good artist to draw for the game's promotion, there is really nothing wrong with out-sourcing the artwork, what is the diffrence here and Nintendo asking that porn artist to draw the illustrations for Fire Emblem DS?

Pixile's art work is good, but not THAT good.

Yes!

This is really coming together well, I'm impressed. And I don't mind DLC as long as it's extra, new content, which I'm pretty sure they're not stupid enough to lock the "true" final stages and ending to DLC or anything like that.

the redone sprites look good alone in zoom up shots but all of the screenshots with the redone graphics gives me an "uncanny valley" vibe.

I don't think "uncanny valley" means what you think it means.

His name escaped me when i wrote that, doesn't change that he draw porn.
Anyway i am talking about outsourcing the artwork, giving this as an example, thats all.

Uhh, in that case a large number of mangaka are simply "porn artists" by your standards...

When is was revealed who was the artist that drew the illusts for FEDS everyone(not in this site) was like "hey that is a manga artist", "do you know that he draw porn too", "LOL he is going to ruin the characters!", "imagine a Fire Emblem porn book ".
so yeah he was stuck in my head as a porn artist to this day, if a vast majority of manga artists draw porn as well then they are porn artists to my standards, yes. :x

You guys are taking what i said too seriously, i was just taking about outsourcing D=

If anyone who produces erotica in addition to their normal work is nothing but a 'porn artist' to you, your 'standards' are laughable. There are a lot of writers and artists out there who produce erotic works, sometimes under a pseudonym, either to help make ends meet while they work on their 'serious' stuff, or just because they enjoy it. Even if you look down your nose at anything overtly sexual, that shouldn't affect your respect for their other work, unless you're some kind of pathetic prude.

Shirow's a kickass writer, artist and illustrator with a huge body of published work under his belt. The man shouldn't be dismissed as just 'a porn artist'.

Until you started saying things like 'doesn't change that he draw porn'. :p

Yeah me too, I've often noticed how those pale, chibi-sized Mimigas look really close to but not enough like people I know in day-to-day life. Gives me the creeps.

an "uncanny valley" vibe is the best explanation of my reaction to the updated graphics: ever so slightly off from the source material and it puts me off due to it, it doesn't look right

the sum looks a lot worse than the parts

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.

Thankfully you'll be able to switch between the original graphics/music and the redone graphics/music.

I think the game looks great. It'll be like getting an 8-bit and a 16-bit game in one!

I don't know the guy and i don't read Manga, I don't watch anime that much either, so my "standars" doen't exist or are changeable, if these writers and artist do write and draw erotic stuff then it part of their work, I never said it as a bad thing or moked them for doing what they do =/
seriously WTF did i said angered you that much...

Personally, I have no objection to DLC for this game, just as I had no objection to the DLC for Mega Man 9. As long as the main game remains intact, I'll happily pay for whatever pieces of DLC that they're offering that I'm interested in.

I don't mind paying for DLC for cheap downloadable games like this. A couple of extra bucks for an extra feature I'm interested in doesn't bother me when the main game is inexpensive and I only have to pay for what I'm interested in getting.

Besides, I want to support Pixel as much as I can. :D

This.

Though I may decide to buy some of the DLC, simply because Pixel deserves my money. :D

See we know that this game is complete and worth whatever they will eventually charge for it. Therefore DLC is garaunteed to be some sort of extra that actually fits what DLC actually is supposed to be. I wouldn't mind more challenge stages like Hell.

I'd pay for some additional playable characters. Even if they didn't have storylines, it would still be really cool to play as Curly Brace, Misery, or Balrog.
