So midnight release means I can play on Thursday night doesn't it?

Or is this just the hype clouding my judgement?

Stupidly tempted to buy this when I've only played 20ish hours of the Civ V complete edition I bought a while back. Probably should just hold off and invest more time into V and see if I really like the genre or not, and will do so unless reviews suggest VI is more beginner friendly with a better tutorial and what not.

Are the features of the Gods and Kings/Brave New World DLC from CIV 5 already in the game or will CIV 6 be a stripped down version, which will be expanded with DLC later? I didn't look at any gameplay really

Guys by Thursday night I mean Friday at 00.00.

For you it looks like it unlocks at midnight Thursday BST. Depending where you are relative to that timezone it could shift a bit.

All the systems except for the World Congress will be in at launch, and I think they've said that will be coming back later. Everything else is there with some level of tweaks.

VI will launch with all of the major features that were added to V in expansions: Religion, Trade Routes, Great Works, etc.

From what I've read, Civ V DLC features made it into Civ VI vanilla.

Giant Bomb's 'Unfinished' vid had Alex saying there was still room to grow through DLC, but it wasn't stripped down like Civ V base game.

Most features from Civ 5 (including expansions) are already in the game, including e.g. Spies and Religion. Off the top of my head, I cannot think of anything important missing.

Yep, even archaeology is in Civ 6 vanilla. As far as I know only the World Congress is missing, everything else from Civ 5 "gold" is in. Which is pretty amazing when you think about it.

It makes sense as a business model though. Expansions are pretty much dead as a concept now outside of a very few, specialist places - they cost too much compared to dlc, require vast amounts of work, and they divide your player base. You are far better off providing the basic game and experience in one package, and then hoovering up money via optional DLC. New civs, alternate leaders, alternate graphics sets - that's how the market works now.

The only thing missing is the World Congress, but it's cause they took out diplomatic victory. It should come back in the future.

So any word on why Diplomatic Victory is out?

Is it going to return or was it deemed obsolete or something?

I'd prefer to have as many non-aggressive victory conditions as possible as I'm not so much into hostile land-grab gameplay style.

Yep, it will be returning, just not for vanilla. They weren’t happy with the diplomatic victory in Civ 5 and want to improve upon it but won’t have it ready for Friday, so it will come back later on. I kind of agree, diplomatic victory was my least favorite way to win in Civ 5 and I rarely went after it, so I won’t be missing it much honestly. Looking forward to seeing how they make it better though.

Cool. Thanks for the head's up.

I'm just fine with them pulling it if they weren't satisfied with the dynamics.

Interested to see what their solution looks like.

So the game hits it's first unlock zone in 27 hours. So maybe we won't get reviews prior to launch? Hopefully the OT is up by then.

Im kinda glad its out as it was by far the easiest victory to achieve, I had to always disable it even on my hardest playthroughs as it would be too easy to get. I hope they spend a lot of time tinkering with it before the bring it back in the future.

With it gone though, does that mean no more huge bonuses from things like the world fair and such?

Sorry I haven't read through all the thread, is there going to be a demo?

I doubt it (I don't recall Civ 5 having a demo). If you want to get an idea of how the game plays, watch one of the youtube playthroughs that are out there. Quill18, Arumba or Shenryyr all do good jobs of explaining how the game works, and there are probably others who are just as good.

Civ 5 did have a demo - you got to play Egypt on a fixed map for 50 turns i think or something? Definitely sold me on the game when it was released.

Civ is one of those specialist places. They do expansions and dlc. If you don't think there will be multiple expansions for civ 6 you are mistaken.

With diplomatic victory temporarily removed, is this list of victory types confirmed complete?

  • Conquest
  • Science
  • Score
  • Tourism
  • New religious victory type?
  • (diplomatic to be added)

So Poland DLC is inevitable now with that opening cinematic.

Huh, I liked culture. I must have missed the news it was removed, sadly.

I guess it might tie into the tourism victory somewhere behind the scenes, and having a high culture definitely helps get some of the powerful late game civics that really ramp up your tourism. So it's still very important.

Isn't Culture and Tourism the same thing ?
Sorry, you're right. That happened in Brave New World.

Since my friends and I never went for conquest or score, I guess we'll go from competing for tourism/science/diplomatic to competing for tourism/science/religion.

It would be nice to have a 4th option. Hopefully the new diplomatic one comes before long.

I really hope the first Expansion is heavily diplomacy focused. I'm pretty sure previews have painted the new diplomacy features as being better than V, but still not that great.

So having an Expansion completely focused on adding depth and value to those systems and a victory with it would be great. The AI just is all too often intractable and creating relationships, trading luxuries, sharing techs and even swapping cities is always so pointless if not impossible.

The amount of times I've become BFFs with another country for centuries only to have them never want to do anything for me is pretty much every time. Same with countries I've gone to war with, whom I've beaten the ever living crap out of and yet they refuse to surrender without me giving up major concessions and always refuse to give up a city or large sum of gold, it's nuts.

Bring back Vassals, bring back stealing cities via culture, make other Civs actually evaluate the situation and realize that I've killed like 5 invasions forces and am not about to lose this war any time soon so suing for peace and asking me to give up 2 cities and pay 15 gold a turn forever isn't going to happen.

My most recent game, a random neutral or positive city state near me was all, "HELP ME LORD PROTECTOR, slay the evil barbarian in my territory".

So I moved into the territory, killed the barbarian, and instantly (or the next turn) was informed that they were all angry I happened to be in their territory. Well, what did you expect.

City States are the worst. Their requests were always a huge pain in the ass for little gain. I'd either shower them with gold to get their perks or ignore them outright unless they were near to me and then I'd over take them if they didn't offer me any good bonuses.

I'm happy tourism is back in Civ 6. I will be even happier if Firaxis has addressed two of the problems with the system in Civ 5:

(1) The "cultural pressure" concept should not be limited to the late game. It's silly to restrict such a large (and fun) gameplay concept to a stage in the game where, often, the winner is already more or less decided. By all means keep the Cold War/blue jeans + rock 'n roll angle for a late-game intensification of cultural warfare, but it should matter throughout the game.

(2) Moving archaeologists around the map is not fun. It's one of a couple of areas where Civ has added things just for the sake of giving the player more to do each turn. But there's nothing particularly interesting about getting an archaeologist to a site, once you've decided on one. A simpler, menu-based system would work better and keep the game moving. (Of course, I think the same about missionaries and inquisitors, so I'll have to hope Civ 6 proves me wrong by going in the opposite direction).

I am cautiously optimistic about tweaks like agendas and CBs, but diplomacy is one area where a ground-up redesign might have positive results. I mean, as simple as Civ 4's diplomacy was (with religion driving a lot of the blocs in international relations), it was still probably the most fun in the series.

Is cultural border taking back from Civ 4? I missed being able to do culture blast to steal some of my neighbors bordering tiles.

Did anyone else here pre-order the 25th Anniversary Edition from the 2K Store? I'm hoping it ships in time to receive it on Friday, but I still haven't received a shipment notification.

EDIT: For what it's worth I received a tracking number for a UPS 2nd Day Air shipment a few hours after I made this post and received the game today (Friday)! Yay!!!

Not at launch, at least. Hopefully it's something they look at in an expansion.

Actually, with Great Generals no longer building citadels, I don't know that there is a way to steal claimed tiles on Civ 6.
