Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker announced as the 13th Doctor!

Singular they.

They is too often used as a collective term. I'm just going to keep on referring to the doctor as "him" unless I otherwise mean Whittaker's version. If people don't like that then tough, they can invent their own weird little gender pronoun to account for the gender fluidity of a regenerating alien.

Why would anyone need to invent a "weird little gender pronoun" when they already have "they"? Even if you associate it too strongly as a collective pronoun, doesn't that make it perfect for a character with 14 incarnations?

No need to invent. That's what singular they is for.

I'm just going to use whatever the Doctor happens to be currently.

She's over 2000 years old.

She's mostly travelled with women.

She stole/borrowed the Tardis.

Works for me. *shrug*

There's no need to complicate this, when the Doctors a man, call him he, when she's a woman call her she. That's what they will use inside the show anyway.

They should post Capaldi's nudes! *reads the "article"* I forgot I had to suffer through seeing Eccleston's ding-a-ling on TV...

Unless there was a different time, I thought it was pretty ballsy of him to let it all hang out in such an unflattering scene in The Leftovers.

Idea.

Maybe make it part of the lore that the doctors new regeneration cycle is more unpredictable and varied then his first since it was tacked on. Set the stage for more casting variation in the future and piss off some people and lore wise it could explain why it took this long for a gender swap.

Maybe they should just pick the person best suited for the role and not do it just to piss people off like some trolling juvenile.

They did. Hence the Doctor you have now.

That is going to be an interesting wrinkle; pronouns are going to be fine when talking about specific incarnations of the Doc, but when talking about the long-term character, I wonder if we ought to move to 'they'?

I don't really think it's going to be that much of an issue. People will go with the "The Doctor" in general. In specific, either the number, or he/she, depending on which Doctor we're talking about.

I wonder if Chibnall is going to use any old companions that have history with the Doctor in the introduction episode. I guess 11 didn't but 10 and 12 did.

If they had to, who would you go for?

I primarily think it would just be a decent excuse for them to write a reason why the character was 1200 years old and regenerated 13 times and all 13 times where white dudes.

Similarly. The master is on a bonus life konami code cycle since that character ran it of his natural regenerations in the 70s so it could be used to explain missy.

But If they wanted to just stick with not given a reason and just say it's just a regular part of regeneration and not trying to shoe horn in a reason for it I'm fine with that too. Might to too sensitive a topic to try explain too much TBH

Is it bad that I hope that she speaks with Scottish accent? Might be the Scottish in me wanting to be pandered to.

Also I wonder what her version of the Doctor will be? As to me the doctor has always been someone who is smart but with a manic streak to them.

I would like to remind everyone is that Daily Mail once championed for tighter control of porn on the internet but yet has no qualm posting nudes on their trash.

The Sun had always been lowbrow trash and will continue to be till the end of time, the only different is that unlike the Daily Mail the sun is at least honest about it.

Missy is still alive for all we know and I believe she's in her third regeneration maybe definitely the second cycle. She burned through the first and was even a bit of a corpse in that one. The second came during the time war as reward for participation. We just don't know how many were used there.

Could you imagine if she goes to that space bar we last saw him at and he starts chatting her up not knowing she's The Doctor? That would be a phenomenally fun moment.

"There is only one person that ever said fuck off to my advances in suck a classy way to me ..... *takes a better look* .... Doctor ?"

Yeah. No one used 'they' when referring to the character we currently call Missy, apart from when specifically addressing the gender change.

She is the Doctor's oldest friend even though she tried to kill him many times.

When someone changes gender, you call that person by their new gender, not by the one they had before. My friend Val I'm not going to say 'when they were a child' or whatever.

I have never watched Dr. Who and I don't really plan to, but I am glad to see a woman become the Doctor. Jodie was one of the best parts of Broadchurch so she is deserving. I might force myself to watch the third season of Broadchurch now... I heard it was much better than the awful second season.

It really was. Some amazing perfomances.

I love the purist creative standards that pop out of thin air in these situations

like casting a woman cos there's never fucking been a woman isn't a good enough reason

every past doctor was cast cos they were the best actor of both genders, and it definitely had nothing to do with any insitutionalised sexism, right

That's actually a pretty good idea.

Y'all need to stop talking about Jack. All this stuff has me hyped for a return that won't happen =/

I so want her to use her northern accent. I doubt it'll happen though.

I think it's generally agreed that Eccleston speaking with his natural Northern accent (alongside Piper) gave the show a lot of working-class appeal so it's certainly plausible they might want to try a similar thing here. The main thing is they've got options which is great.

People still bitching about a genderless alien who is known to be able to regenerate in either gender becoming a woman?!

A reality check or better yet a psychologist is needed, methinks.

Chibnall has said he wanted a clean slate for series 11.
New Doctor. New companion.
