Hi France-GAF, so my girlfriend and I are planning a three-week trip in June/July, and I was just looking for any tips or recommendations based on our general travel plan. We are flying into Paris and spending a couple of days there, then travelling down to Clisson to go to Hellfest. After the festival is over we plan on spending the next couple of weeks slowly working our way back up to coast before we have to get back to Paris and fly home. As we'll have camping gear anyway we will mostly be looking for campsites etc to stay in during our journey back up. Any recommendations for places to go, routes to take, or just general tips and advice would be most welcome!

I'll go to Nantes, and work my way south (La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Bayonne, maybe Perpignan, Agde, Sète, Montpellier if you've got that much time / money and want to see the Mediterranean coast). So yeah, instead of up, I'm saying go down, and take a train back to Paris.

While you're around, I recommend that you check Nantes, that's a fine city, went there only for few days but if you like medieval cities, that's a place to check.

Edit : The roadmap given by Maiar is great.

Hi France GAF,

Recently moved to the cote d'azur after living in Paris for a couple of years. It's beautiful and all, but I miss the damn metro. And not having a car here sucks.

I lived near Toulon for a few years as a Teen. Coming from Paris, that was the most boring years in my life... I can't live without a Transportation system that runs until midnight :D

Notice how post elections everybody was claiming that there was bound to be a clash between him and Merkel, post-electoral politics one might say. But still, it's nice how they were able to come together last year to avoid imminent implosion of the euro. Hell they look more in bed than merkozy sometimes! That said the whole euro strength valuation is perhaps going to cause some tension now.

That didn't happen because Hollande caved in everytime.
Basically we elected the 1rst French president without any nut.

The Fifth Republic was made by Charles de Gaulle for Charles de Gaulle. It's a presidential regime, and Hollande has all the more power since the Socialists have the majority in the two houses of Parliament, most Regional councils and most municipal councils. Basically, the Socialists can do everything on their own except changing articles of the Constitution.

That should be in the OP too, it's really what is the Vth republic.

Now that the mariage shit has been done and over can they finally do something about the economy?

About the unions, here CGT is pushing for people to get certificate for going to churches so that they won't work on sunday.
That's right! They're so far up their ass that they're pushing for more attendance at church.

And Libération is one of the shittiest paper around, the day they're bankrupt will be a good day for French journalism.

Poorer EU countries asked him not to veto the budget - which he had reasons to do since Merkel would follow Cameron rather than Monti & Rajoy despite their respective countries being in crisis.

That probably won't change your opinion though :p

The fifth Republic is not a presidential regime since the government can be overturned by parliament and the parliament can be dissolved by the President.

It's not a parliamentary system either since the President is directly elected by direct universal suffrage.

Why it's a semi-presidential regime then !

Ask creepyGAF !

Honestly I'm not surprised, but they are pro players so it's better for the media to talk about them instead of talking about frenchman anonymous#154254254 who doesn't ask for the prositute's age either (and doesn't care of course).

Better regulated prostitution, the future of a better employment rate ?
I'd like that !

Devil's advocate here, but many of these prostitutes and several others involved in similar scandals looked past beyond the legal age, to be fair.

I'm in Nice and there is public transport here, but uh yeah not the same thing, so still miss Paris in a number of ways...

So uh, question - is renting games or selling used games illegal here in France or what?

Renting ins't legal or authorised (Even if some small Video Clubs do it), selling used games is totally legal.

that's a good itinary.
Also: FOOD. Seriously.

Bordeaux Caneles (a dessert), oyster of the bassin d'arcachon, pork rillette, bayonne ham and saucisson, foie gras poele (panned foie gras), salade perigourdine, the 100s of cheeses (all the regions have their own cheese), the local liquors, pastries, basque dishes, beef tartare, snails etc too many to list...

Not to be chauvinistic, but French food is amazing and has so much variety. And the South West cuisine is one of the best. If you don't know what to order, just say that you'd like to try specialties of the region and ask for the recommendation of the chef or the waiter. They'll be happy to give you advices.

Not illegal no. But video games shop needs to first obtain the right from the publisher to be allowed to rent a game. And unfortunately publishers never allow it... However you can perfectly sell used games to shops. No issues there, except maybe finding the said shop.

The vote of no confidence is meaningless since the government is chosen from the majority of the parliament and they can do jackshit to the head of the exec which means that he can still reappoint the prime minister whenever he wants.
It's even debatable that the president could murder someone on national tv and get off unscathed since no judge has any juridction over the guy.
The reform of the constitution Sarkozy got was supposed to solve that lil' problem.
You can argue that the government is doing whatever it want regardless of the president but we both know that's never happening.

That's he's a spineless who'll cave at the 1rst sign of pressure?
I'd like to be proven wrong on that, if people didn't manifest en masse we wouldn't have even got this law for gay mariage even.
The government is also full of even more incompetent bastards than before (seriously check how they handled the budget for 2013 there's enough material to joke about for the next 10 years), but this time they're not racists. I'll give you that.

that's a good itinary.

We're not going to pretend he didn't know who was working with him, are we ?

He just needed to be the undisputed leader, to please the very French (and harmful) fantasy of a dynamic king-like figure that has the nerves to solve our problems. The fact that people suddenly became concerned with halal food and the muslim veil isn't accidental either. I'll take the spineless guy over this anytime, really.

Still laughing about the huge market attack we should have had after the election btw.

Were you asleep or did you not see the economy going in the shitter?
Granted that was happening regardless of who we got.
Also it change nothing at all, the difference is that while we got jokers like morano or that bachelot we at least got competent people who knew how to make a budget..
These people at the head are from the ENA, it's their fucking job to know how to pass a budget and manage the thing, if they can't be trusted with that I'll take the fans who make hot air on social issues but at least doesn't make sure I won't have a job in 6 months thank you very much.
Our private economy is basically based on a huge number of small, familial companies they've been hammered and butchered by the competition in the last year or so.
I don't care that much because they're not the kind of guys who pay me for my job but I can't say the same for everyone.
This government, and that's exactly why I can't stop cursing them, is only good if you work for the state.
For everyone else it's shit city with the smallest being left to die.
Again these people made investing in companies harder while making sure that investing in art pieces is free money.
They don't have our best interest at heart.
At least with the racists they're open about that.

But the President's criminal liability hasn't (directly) anything to do with that. As for your first remark, yeah it's called semi-presidential not semi-parliamentary : )

Still, it combines the best (worst?) of both worlds... And it's definitely leaning towards presidential although the leaning may vary depending on the majorities (cohabitation) and the President's personality (Sarkozysation).

No. Were you ?

It's been the same fucking thing for 30 years. For some reason the right only wakes up now, after being in charge for 10 years, not changing anything and turning us into a country afraid of its own shadow, in a globalized economy. Great job guys.

spoiler : Cohabitation will never happen again.
We elect the deputes just after the presidential election, they've been reduced to yes men with little to no will.
They serve no purposes.
And the Sarkozysation was merely a smoke screen, the one ruling really was Fillon (there's numerous cases where went against his lord's will although that's not often reported).
Ayrault is really a mirror to his president and government, full of promises for his clientele but little to vision except keeping the power they finally wanted.

This system is pointless in the current climate anyway and goes totally against why and how it was made, it was made by and for DeGaules.
Without him we're left with this bastardisation where the parties can (and did) confiscate the will of the people.

No. Were you ?

That's totally not a good thing btw and we can thank our neighbour on the south for shitting the bed so bad for that.
And lol at the right being in charge anyway when with the decentralisation most of the decision are taken closer to the people in left directed offices.
Heck the regions are so well managed that they're responsible for the problems of Dexia that cost us plenty already.
And where did you see that I was saying Sarkozy would have done better or that he wasn't to blame anyway?
The left is in power and is leaving shit stains on sheets I sure as hell will not give them a free pass on that.
I didn't for the right so I'm not stopping because they're less shit on some issues.

Sarkozy may ‘run for presidency in 2017’

Nicolas Sarkozy, still smarting from his defeat in the 2012 French presidential election, may run for office again in 2017, according to former Foreign Minister Alain Juppé.

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy may run for office again in 2017, a senior member of his centre-right UMP party hinted on Wednesday.

When asked if Sarkozy would present himself as candidate in 2017, former foreign minister Alain Juppé told France’s Parliamentary Channel LCP, “I get the feeling that he will – even if it’s not for me to answer that question in his place.

“Nicolas Sarkozy is here in France, he follows politics with a great deal of attention and from our regular phone calls I can tell he is extremely vigilant,” Juppé added.

According to a January 6 IFOP poll, 67 per cent of UMP members favour Sarkozy’s return to politics after his defeat at the hands of Socialist opponent and current French President François Hollande in May 2012.

Sarkozy, however, has kept a relatively low public profile since losing the election, largely attending conferences abroad and giving private lectures.

France ‘going to the dogs’

Sarkozy has broken his silence just once, in August 2012, when he demanded international action to stop the Syrian regime’s brutal crackdown on an uprising which has claimed the lives of an estimated 70,000 people.

However, one member of the former president’s entourage told AFP on Wednesday, “There’s no change in Sarkozy’s position… he has retired from political life”.

But others believe that the centre-right ex-president, still smarting from the humiliation of his election defeat, feels it is his duty to return.

“We won’t know for sure until 2015,” one unnamed former minister told Inrocks, a news and cultural weekly magazine, in reaction to Juppé’s comments.

“He will mull it over until at least a year before the UMP primaries, and I would be astonished if he has closed the door on a possible return.

“Sarkozy believes deeply that France is going to the dogs and that Hollande is not enacting the necessary reforms.”

Last October, investigative newspaper the Canard Enchaîné quoted a “close associate” of Sarkozy as saying that the former leader felt a “moral obligation” to be a candidate in 2017.

That wouldn't be the first time.

Remember when people officially announced "retiring completely from politics" and then HEY remember me ? I'm going to do politics fuck yeah !

But Sarko...

He clearly thinks aloud "Hey you told I was awful as a president, but look, your savior Hollande sucks too ! France is in danger, you need a President like ME !"

UMP is such a clusterfuck I'm baffled how it can still bear the name.

Oh god no more Carla Bruni CDs, please

How does Cope think he has any chance of winning the presidential is beyond me. Goes to show that you can't really be a politician without complete, insane, and irrational faith in oneself. Reminds me of romney, except that Cope is a million times less likable.

Hi, thanks for the input! Going South sounds like it will be fun, we have around two weeks after the festival so we should be able to fit a fair amount in.

In regards to travel, we will most likely be using trains to get everywhere, what is the best option in terms of buying travel passes? Is there any special thing we can get to cover our whole trip, or will it be best to just buy them when we turn up at each station?

I hear there are train tickets you can buy that enable you to get on any train at any time, but I'm not familiar with them myself. Ask around in at a tour-operator, they might be able to help. I've given the national rail service's website a glance and I couldn't find a thing about it, but then again it's known to be a crappy website (and for some, an appalling company anyway)

Beau travail, Computer! Here is the town I live in.

Is the President is as weak as the media says?

Even though I haven't voted for him myself (white-voted in both rounds; I consider myself leaning on the right-wing generally-speaking, but I can't stand any of the French right-wingers), I would say I appreciate his action if I were to be called for one of those popularity polls. The atmosphere in the country is much more tame ever since Sarko has left. I no longer have the impression everyone is at each others' throat.

Salut les gaffeurs français !

Ahem I won't get into political discussions, but I just wanted to point out one of my favourite modern French novel ever for gaffers to read : La Nuit des Temps by René Barjavel (it's The Ice People in English I think). I was young when I read it, but it left a strong impression on me.
I'm realizing most of the books I read for my entertainment are in English or from English authors :/

That's Eurail/Interrail tickets (interrail is for EU citizens, Eurail for the others)
It's a great deal, buying individual tickets would quickly become very expensive.
