Games you remember, names you don't

guys I have this game in my head that I played back in the late 90s.

Had werevolves, sorta blood rayne vibe, creepy atmosphere and third person.

Played it on PC, I know its not much to go on but played it as a kid and it has been bugging me for a while.

Seeing this topic pop up again, I guess I'll put this out here because it's been driving me mad over the years that I've never been able to remember what it was that I played.

- Was a PS1 game. Maybe it bombed commercially because I remember buying it cheap as a kid and being surprised at just how much it cost.

- Was a 3d brawler of sorts, I think. Since I remember navigating areas and beating up enemies.

- Some of the environments I remember were an office complex, and then one of the next levels after that involved having to pass through a giant revolving fan on time in a possible vent of sorts.

- I believe you could pick up weapons from the environment and use them on foes. I vaguely remember a fire axe you could use.

- I remember there being some small destructible elements in the environment as you fought--for some reason I seem to remember there being stacks of paper that could get knocked over.

- I remember a generally dark/moody colour scheme and lighting. Though a lot of PS1 games were like that due to technical limitations, so maybe that doesn't help, haha.

Some of these elements may or may not be embellished or exaggerated in my mind over the years as I've tried to remember just what it was, but I'm hoping some of the pieces might come together in a logical way in someone more familiar with PS1 games.

Fighting Force perhaps?

The description is really very vague and describes a huge number of RPGs. Do you maybe roughly remember the time period, for example "around '92-'94" or "definitely not after '96" etc? Also, was the movement free and realtime (like Ultima Underworld) or was it tile based (Lands of Lore)? Maybe something about the position of the first person view screen, its size, were there character portraits on the screen, how advanced were the graphics etc?

It was Ultima Underworld! Thank you! Man that brings me back.

Ah, yeah, it looks like it was Fighting Force! Fighting Force 2, to be precise. Thank you!

After I posted this, I ended up trawling through a list of PS1 brawlers and looking up footage since I felt I just had to get to the bottom of this after years, haha.

Looking at footage of FF2, I'm actually surprised about how much I had remembered. The destructible environments, the brooding mood, the fire axe, even the bits of paper that came flying out. And the giant fans show up, too! That game really left an imprint on my mind it seems, haha.

I remember playing 3d beat'em up similar to Fighting Force on Windows. Few things I remember:

  • very dark environments (night city)
  • not stylized graphics like fighting force but more realistic style
  • I think it was released later than Fighting Force

Thanks for help.

Nope, I still remember that one. This was much much darker. It was so dark you couldn't sometimes make out things (thought that could be because of bad memory or incorrect monitor settings). I think camera angle was much higher (something similar to this but it was more zoomed out from player)

So there's this game I used to play, not too long ago where I always start at the top of a huge mountain with a lake, and there's a sign saying something like kingdom of the deer. Initially you try to stay on the top of the mountain and bears come and kill you so you have to come running down the mountain and there's some children playing something I don't remember, a father with his daughter, and more than I can not remember, the road is on zigzags, there's mud and trees with thorns along the way, sometimes you have to stop or you'll fall down the mountain. There were several different animals in the game. It might sound a bit abstract, but it's all I remember

Sounds like it might be an action adventure with tank controls and maybe prerendered backgrounds, so try Time Commando, Perfect Weapon, Tunguska: Legend of Faith, also maybe Queen: The Eye. For some reason the Men in Black game also comes to mind (I think it had some urban levels), but I'm not sure it had melee combat. Also try Dark Earth. I'd mention Fear Effect and The Devil Inside but I think they don't have melee combat.

maybe Oni ?

Checked all of them and still nothing. I remembered (at least I think so) two new details:

  • one of pickupable weapons was RPG
  • it was bundled as a demo with some magazine (very likely local czech or slovak magazine)

Thank you for help so far.

Google tells me is: Marvelous: Mōhitotsu no Takarajima

That's not it, the art style of Marvelous is different.

It's actually Bushi Seiryuuden: Futari no Yuusha

Also, if anyone can help, I'm still looking for this game:

GAF, maybe you can help me out with this? I'm looking for a DOS PC game, potentially around the early/mid 90s, that I used to play a lot with my grandmother. Searching for it has come up with nothing tho.

Here's what I remember:
  • It was a casino game, set in Las Vegas.
  • Your character flew in on an airplane. After landing, your character could check into a hotel, and you got a key, room, and everything. At any time during the game, you could end it by going to the hotel/airport combo place and checking out.
  • The graphics quality was probably around that of Leisure Suit Larry 1-3.
  • It had some digitized voices in it.
  • Despite being a DOS game, we played it around the time of early Windows 95, suggesting it was on shelves up until them.
  • You could move your character left and right; it was a sidescroller. Going off the edge of the screen in either direction would take you to a new area.
  • It had the standard assortment of casino games in it to play, but the two I specifically remember were Texas Hold Em and Slots.
  • There was a magic show your character could see.
  • You could also go to the pawn shop and pawn a family heirloom off if you ran low on money.
  • It is NOT Trump Castle II; the graphics for this game weren't photo-realistic.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't remember how good the game was, but I'd like to relive the nostalgic and good memories I had playing it with her.

I have ruled out Vegas Jackpot Gold and Lucky's Casino Adventure, although Lucky's is the closest I've seen yet.

Hover cars with weapons in an arena battle? Pretty sure it was ps2, and I don't think it was Twisted Metal as the screenshots of that don't seem familiar. I could be misremembering though.
Were there any other similar games?

It could be one of the following games:

Cyber Sled
San Francisco Rush 2049
Vigilante 8

I watched a friend play Boulder Dash some weeks ago and remembered that I had something similar as a kid, but when i google Boulder Dash and the clones I can find, nothing matches my memory. Now I'm getting really frustrated and hope that someone can help me.

So...
I think I played it on an ancient Windows 3.x computer, so I'm probably looking for a DOS game. But it's also possible that I played it on Win95.
I remember it as being extremely Boulder Dash-y with a dude that dug through brown dirt and there were round rocks and some kind of gems to collect. And you had to make sure they didn't fall on you but you had to kill stuff with it and so on. As said, very Boulder Dash-y.

I remember something about the title being written in rocks that you had to go past in the beginning but I could be completely off on that. Or was it gems? Ugh, something about text is all I can remember.

The closest I've come look-wise is Rocks'n'Diamonds. But it is not that.

Sorry for the vagueness!

Maybe check Herman and the Falling Rocks.

I had two I looked for for years and this ended up being one of them. The other was Hero's Hearts (I think) but that one, while having some similarities, is much more different than the other clones.

Nope, that isn't it. I remember it being kinda dark. Black background, dark brown dirt and no bright colors aside from the gems.

In response to various other 'boulderdash clone' queries I've accumulated a list of possible titles, so eliminating those you've already said are no-nos, take a look through these:

Heartlight
Supaplex
Bluppo

I don't think anyone ever got the boulderdash game I was looking for that had larger than normal blocks, like double the dimensions and I think a realistically proportioned player character. Probably on Atari ST & I'm not sure if it was commercial.

Couple year old MechWarrior clone multiplayer game which was free to play on Steam. Can't remember the name. Was wondering if the game is alive this evening. Anyone know?

Ok I got one that's been bugging me for years. It's an arcade game I used to play as a kid in the 80's. I remember it was right beside a super Mario and a black tiger arcade cabinet.

- 2d side scroller shooter/ platformer
- main character looked like a robot or a mech soldier with a bunch of weapons
- when you jumped, you could hover like iron man. Like jets in your boots kinda thing
- at the start you had to pick what planet in a solar system you wanted to clear first. --There was a fire planet that was hard as hell.
- think you had to fight aliens and crazy stuff

I've been looking for this game for so long it's crazy

My friend described this newish game that takes place in future mexico where even poor people have flying cars, there's a little girl and a robot, and the robot gets bullied. Anyone know what the heck he's talking about?

He's not generally into gaming and he told me he saw a trailer of this a few months ago and thought it looked cool. I'm sure it's a very bad description.

So I was racking my brains for this one for the 'games that don't have wikipedia entries' thread, but couldn't recall the name:

PC game. I'm fairly confident it was DOS, not Windows. I think it had a single-word title; it may well have been a title that was in some way a nod towards Monopoly (When trying to find it I found Oligopoly, which isn't the game I'm after, but the name rang bells so maybe there was something right about it?)

I'm sure I played it from a covermount CD, so early CD-ROM era - probably '93ish (definitely post-Doom, probably pre-Quake) - but don't think of it as CD-sized. Rather, I think it was a small shareware or freeware title, although I don't recall any game content locked out, which suggests maybe freeware? It might well have been PC Gamer UK, but don't consider that set in stone. Probably VGA; don't think it was EGA, don't think it was SVGA. Could be wrong on the SVGA front.

Now, the actual game: It was a business simulation, where you'd buy up plots of land, I think around a small town - I'd say it bordered on a boardgame more than a fully-fledged sim, because it was fairly abstracted, and was very much laid out in terms of each player taking their turn independently. I'm fairly sure the play environment was just a single grid. I don't recall quite *why* you were buying up land - dunno if you were building on them, or excavating materials, or what. Actually, I'd say the whole 'plots of land' thing reminds me a little these days of how Irata was laid out in MULE, but this was very much a real-world environment.

One thing I distinctly recall was that I found a light exploit where I could buy and sell the same plot repeatedly to drive the value up - the devs had recognised that this was possible, because it was possible to get caught for illegal trading (that came with a penalty, something like missing the remainder of your turn?), but with limited usage you could still reap the benefit without taking the penalty.

That's about all I can recall, but I'm going to keep poking at Mobygames for inspiration; that said, I think it's concievable that this is obscure enough that maybe it doesn't even have a page there!

I'm trying to remember the name of a PC CD-ROM adventure game (in the style of Myst) from the mid-90's. I don't remember much about the game other than that it was incredibly bizarre. You began the game by entering a giant floating head, and the conceit of the game is that you were embodying different characters is the last moments of their lives (I think). It may have had something to do with Japanese mythology, but I might be conflating that with "Cosmology of Kyoto".
I remember watching a "Let's Play" of it YouTube years ago. There's one part in particular where you're navigating a space as a character that has just been "born," for lack of a better word, when a hand comes in from off screen and snaps your character's neck. That happens in first person, through clunky Myst-ish HyperCard-type graphics. It scared the shit out of the dude playing the game in the "Let's Play," and it really sticks out in my head. I just can't remember the name of the damn game.

Found it as soon as I posted this. Of course. "Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou"
Here's a trailer for anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyDwfeYaDIM

I remember playing an arcade fighter in maybe 1994... or 1995 or 1996. It was Mortal Kombat-esque in that it was 2D and I'm fairly sure it had blood and maybe even fatalities. I *think* it had digitised graphics but I can't be sure. The only character I remember was a female who had long hair which she would use as a weapon (like Sindel).

I've looked at loads of videos on YouTube in the past but could never clock it. I might have saw it but just didn't recognise it from my memory...any ideas?

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
Hmm the female character using long hair as a weapon instantly reminded me of Millia Rage from Guilty Gear, but literally everything else doesn't fit (first GG was in 1998 and it's anime/cartoony, not digitized and not particularly violent).

Try these:
Shogun Warriors / Fujiyama Buster
Blood Warrior / Ooedo Fight
Tattoo Assassins
Survival Arts
Best of Best (not a typo)

It might be Blood Warrior / Ooedo Fight (which is a sequel to Shogun Warriors), since it has a Kabuki character with long red hair, and it has digitized characters.

Ok, so I've been trying to recall the name of this game I played a long, long time ago on the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis). The stuff I remember:

- It was a sidescrolling platformer
- Had bright, colorful graphics
- Had really great music
- Had something to do with Dinosaurs...? This is the part I'm a bit iffy about...
- Had a stage that was based in a movie studio I think? I specifically remember enemies that were basically walking clapperboards

I'm usually really good at keeping track of stuff, no idea why I can't seem to remember this game at all.

It's somewhat different but is there any chance it could be Vlak? It had title screen written with ingame items.

I've been trying to find this game for ages, never have used threads like this. :)

It's for the Amiga. A sidescrolling platformer where you can go left and right, trying to find (among other things) letters that spell out something. I think you finished the level when you finished the word. In the level there is also a shop you can buy the letters. The graphics are pretty lush. If I recall correctly, one of the earlier levels had some wooden huts and wooden platforms. I think the character was pixie-like, but could be wrong here.
