I think MF DOOM is the greatest hip hop artist that ever lived

always loved this one, one of my favorite DOOM tracks

Scared of a bunch of water, then get out the rain
Order a rapper for lunch and spit out the chain
Then kick a lungee off the tip of his Timbo
And trick a honey dip into a game of strip limbo
Odd - he couldn't find no remorse
A wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse
Of course his technique was from a divine source
Never knew the price of ice, or what swine cost
One guy tried to bite the heat
That's when he discovered the other other white meat
Ohhhh! The one they hate so well
He sure keeps it psycho like the old Bates Motel
They came to ask him for at least some new tracks
But only got confronted by the beast with two backs
Knock - Mouse is a made man
Villain laid it down like the best laid plan
Belle the Cat, who the hell is that near the middle
Got y'all but it's not all beer and Skittles
Prepare the vittles, got riddles and spittles
Crystal clear to the jot, or the tittle
Sssst! It's hot off the griddle
Came to take the cake whether it's a lot, or a little
Kaboom; DOOM is nervous large
You could tell by his blooming room service charge
... Dark and tall to boot
The only thing was wrong was he was bald as a coot
Used to rent a van from Peter Pan, the red and tan
And keep the human foot for his dead man's hand
This was when the mask was brand spanking new
Before it got rusted, from dranking all the brew
Stanking too, pew
Kept all his earnings in the bank and his shoe
Spat what he knew, energy for true
To all fake rappers, twenty-three skidoo
Excuse you, any room in the class front?
For a blast of the blunt, shrooming since last month
Doom a human in the Mask, born to stunt
Danger zooming past mad fast on the hunt
Keep your streets, we got the city neatly conquered
Discretely with the CD till they be completely bonkered
The fans demanded it, handled it, swallow it
His own brand of shit, if only he could bottle it
Hmm... Nah, shit could get messy
The feds tried to torture him for the secret recipe
He said it's no use, I only know half
No speaka de english, I only do the math
... BZZT! Felt no pain
His brain was saturated with cocaine and Rogaine
He said - try scan, no thing, three-card dead
Fly man go for bling, he got bled
I jam over sting, see spots red
I am "Sofa King, We Todd Ed"

how many rappers got rhymes like DOOM?

I turned one of my college group members into a DOOM fan just by playing that song, he was just like that was wild and had to hear it again over and over lol. Defo one of my favorites.

He makes it seem so effortless - like he doesn't even need to write his bars, he opens his mouth and inspiration oozes. Easily the best flows in the game.

yeah his nonchalant flow is so good with all the crazy shit he spits. rhymes within rhymes within rhymes. it took me a while to get into him because it's not immediately apparent what sets him apart but then it clicks and you're just like...fuck, how does he do that?

Sofa King, man that song is hard but it is so relaxed in that way that a lot of the later MF DOOM stuff is, DOOM spits venom from a metal throne, metal faced.

He is a legend man, a hip hop supervillain. A real life supervillain.

All capitals when you spell the mans name.

MF DOOM!

The Mouse and The Mask and Occult Hymn are really underrated tbh.

He's top 3 for sure. Arguably the best.

Every week is mystery meat!

See you in school.

Mmm..Food?!

Ello Guv'nor.

I got rhymes like dimes
Speak about what it's like to be about the broken times

When it's all over he hope we all go to heaven.

He nasty like the old time old number seven.

Biggie is still the greatest all-around hip hop artist in my book.

But DOOM is a mystic. He taps into something beyond everyone else. His lyrics are incomparable and his flow has an understated effortless cool to it. If Biggie is the Beatles, then DOOM is Dylan.

This is a very apt comparison.

I recommend billy woods to fans of DOOM. He is quite good.

I will give it a listen but if I don't like it, I will be honest with you about it.

It's MM.. FOOD, an anagram of M.F. DOOM

And Sofa King is great. The whole album is great and has no right being as good as it is for being such a 'commercial' album. Occult Hymn was a great followup, just wish it was longer, though can't complain since both were given away for free. Really like the version of Space Hos on it.

Meat Grinder

The worst hated God who perpetrated odd favors
Demonstrated in the perforated Rod Lavers
In all quad flavors, Lord save us
Still back in the game like Jack LaLanne
Think you know the name, don't rack your brain
On a fast track to half insane
Either in a slow beat or at the speed of "Wrath of Kane"
Laughter, pain
Hackthoo'ing songs lit, in the booth, with the best host
Doing bong hits, on the roof, in the west coast
He's at it again
Mad at the pen
Glad that we win, a tad fat, in a bad hat for men
MF DOOM is def up there for me.

Oh and I still love the opening for Kookies:

One lonely evening alone, home
End up with carpal tunnel syndrome
And here I am, known for giving heavy back aches
Grown and living off of Little Debbie snack cakes
Supposed to be checking e-mails
All I got is messages from ass naked females

I don't know no Jenny
She said it's free and I won't owe her a penny
And that's the last time I saw her
But thousands of more horrors on online Gomorrah
And Sodom
They got 'em with they curls out
And they got a better sales pitch than the Girl Scouts
I wonder what I owe her
For a whole box of caramel coconut samoa

Mm.. Food is a good album but nothing from his solo discography or Madlib's compare to the brilliance of Madvillainy.

I can't agree with putting Doom ahead of 2pac, Jay-Z, B.I.G., Nas, Eminem, even Kendrick.

This seems like a more "super-lyrical" discussion than a real discussion of who is the GREATEST HIP-HOP ARTIST THAT EVER LIVED. In my opinion, Doom isn't close.

All the artist you named that are supposedly ahead of MF DOOM are all primarily rappers, yet you're talking about this being a super lyrical discussion...

We could sit here and post METEL FINGERS beats all day, stop playing.

I get Eminem achieved commercial success as a rappity rap white guy shock rapper who eventually made some inspirational songs, but how exactly does that make him better than DOOM? I know it's not cause his discography lmao

Do you know how many current artist DOOM has influenced?

Joey Badass/ProEra, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Danny Brown.

Danny Brown had his brother send him DOOM lyrics in jail. Joey Badass early mixtapes had MF DOOM beats not Eminem

Never thought of him as great MC. At the time way back there were so many other better MCs. His beats, of course are on point. His 60s marvel saturday morning cartoon samples on point as well.

I don't understand how you could compare him to the greats. Also the MCs you mentioned that are inspired by Doom are not that great lyrically.

He like both members of outkast I would put ahead of everyone you just said except for nas, em, and kendric.

I do not have the reverence that so many have for big and pac, they are fine. I don't think either of them are the grestest hip hop artists of all time, let alone just rappers. And jay is like a 7 out of 10.

You inspired me to re-listen to MF Doom's records yesterday. Really excellent stuff. He is in my top ten for sure. Also populated by the true #1 Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Kool Keith, ODB, Beastie Boys, KRS One, and Chuck D. Lots of people are going to say Biggie, Tupac, Eminem - all great but commercial success doesn't make you the best.

Lots of people....I'm literally the only one in this thread who mentioned them and I said nothing about commercial success.

Edit: One other poster mentioned Biggie. My bad.

"..are going to" is future tense. It's a prediction for something that hasn't happened yet. But thanks for being defensive I guess.

Defensive? Ok.

We're on the 4th page of a thread started 2 days ago and only 2 people have mentioned BIG, let alone any of the other artists I mentioned. Combine that with the fact that pretty much everybody who is in this thread is agreeing with OP and your post doesn't really make much sense.

He singlehandedly changed my perspective on hip hop. Made me get into stuff Del the Funkey Homosapien, Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith), and many other underground artists to name. Yeah, he's definitely up there for me personally.

Have you heard this song by any chance?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sMLUg7VdXo

Yes and that's not what I would consider lyrical excellence. It's just a very uncommon style/flow.

I don't know if you can remember a guy named Kool Keith/Dr. Octogan/Black Elvis etc... who had the same kind of flow. Was great for the time(mid late 90s) but, not for now. I hear a lot of these young guys kind of doing this style now and it's quite honestly nothing new and unimpressive..

For the record, yeah, that track is dope. But... c'mon, really?

I gotta be in a specific type of mood to listen to Doom, a mood I am typically never in.

I respect the opinion, but I can't do it

Nope, totally understand what you're saying.

The issue is what you just said, a mockery or imitation of the flow but a failure to meet the lyricism.

However, this isn't always the case.

Kool Keith is the greatest there ever was. Dude is 53 and is still dropping bangin tracks.

You know what, I can concede that. Eminem is a perfect case in point. He took the same style of rhyme and flow and in a sense evolved it. It also helped his motif was a bit more marketable at the time.

IMO he is more known for his production than his rhymes.

I'm not a huge fan. I'm telling you, I'm getting tired of Spotify putting him in his many aliases in my weekly mix. I get a lot of hip-hop in that mix and like 3 songs or more are him every week smh

One of the best producers/MC's, in terms of the total package. Q-Tip and RZA are also up there. Kanye makes good beats but his rhymes are not that amazing.

Never was ever a big enough fan to really research his stuff but people always tended to love him. That being said I listened to Operation Doomsday for the first time this weekend because of this thread and this is absolutely incredible.

Doomsday has me in shock O_O

Wow incredible song

Eh I'm not a fan of a lot of his stuff, but I will admit that doomsday is an incredible track, I could easily listen to it for hours
