I don't think the aircraft damage has ever been done this extensively, I'm curious to see just how far it goes.

If somebody shoots out the hydraulics to one wing, will you not be able to control it, or have to use manual? That would be so awesome. And if your horizontal stabilizer gets shot up a ton, will it affect performance? I think I heard that it would, not sure where though.

PS3 and 360 only, I believe.

That would be rad. I hope its good. Whats the release date for the PS3 version?

I might pickup an T-flight Hotas Stick for this as I need one for my PC anyways..

hope it does well enough to keep the coffers funding storm of war full.

No worries, Oleg is making a new IL for PC as well.

it's battle of britain centric. on initial release, atleast.

What does the IL-2 have to do with the Battle of Britain or is this series always been just a general WWII flight sim?

well, il2 has already had a pacific expansion. this is the long awaited sequel.

its up at xbox live website..i couldnt find it within the 360 console's marketplace... downloading now though, type in a search for it....its very handy to use the website to send a demo to your xbox...

Thanks for the reminder Mr.Potato Head. I won't be near my Xbox for another week but I've got it queued up now. :D Confirmed available in Aus if anyone was wondering (because it's often not the case).

I'm am thiiiis close to buying one of those Madcatz flight sticks.

Its alright i guess... the controls were too loose/squirly for my own liking but of course you can adjust them in the options menu and it takes a little while to get use to them but im comfortable with the controls now, although it still dont feel right, probably because im more into Ace Combat/HAWX and play the hell out of those games.

Gameplay seems decent but nothing out of the ordinary for these kind of games..it gave me a feeling of battlestations Britain/Pacific along with a splash of Crimson Skies..on top.

I dont know..if you liked battlestations pacific which wasnt too shabby..you will like this, also im not as hardcore with these WW2 air combat shooters like some of you guys..im just playing with my regular gamepad.

EDIT: Visuals are...meh but lots of fighters on screen at once..which is nice

Anyways.. off to play some Splosion man :D

Cheers. I been keeping my eye on this, but will have to wait until my rate-cap gets lifted on the weekend.

Thanks for the impressions - I think this game looks pretty good for a console flight sim, now I just have to wait for Silver plebs to be given access to the demo to check it out for myself :)

Oh god. I just watched those videos.

As someone who loves WWII-era dogfighting games, and only owning a 360, BF1943's air combat is terribly basic, and games like BA/BA2 and BS:p/BS:M are games I don't even want to bother with. Now, this game looks fucking incredible.

Cannot wait to try this. Think this or OpFP2 might be my game to hold me over until MW2 drops.

EDIT: Also, as someone who has always wanted to try IL-2 Sturmovik, but never had the gaming PC to play it, I'm really amped to play this. I'm just really surprised at how this snuck up on me like this. September 4 can't come fast enough!

That's odd; It's not on the front page or under the latest stuff, I had to drill down into the alphabetics to find the demo.

Downloading it now (Euro PAL). IL-2: Birds of Prey. 1.22GB.

It's not odd actually, seems to happen most weeks with Arcade releases, they usually turn up first in the full list.

Don't know man, looked pretty fine here on my HDTV, I have seen much worser looking games. I found the ground to look pretty good, normally it's a pixelated mess up close.

Don't know how HAWX is in this regard.

Mine is arriving next week, I'll give my thoughts on it (used Cyborg Evo for BF1942 and loved it so it should be fine)

I think we're playing two completely different demos.. I was so disappointed by Ace Combat 6, but this is more like my type of game. Great flight model, awesome visuals (Details solid all the way to the ground as well).

Agree. Fantastic demo just finished the final tutorial and now have a much better feel for the plane.

Love shooting the wings off the enemy planes and watch them spin to their doom.:lol

Just checked it out on my lunch, really loved the demo.

The visuals are great, is it 1080p? looks like it is on my TV.

Anyway the blasted through on Arcade easily, loadsa fun ripping apart bombers then unlocked and played on Sim WOW so different, can't wait to be playing Sim online.

The detail on the ground is great and the controls are excellent, work really well from flying to just looking around and navigating.

Really impressed.

Holy crap the visuals on the second mission. Just damn.. And on "simulator", the flight model dynamics is just incredible for a console platform. Good times. This is now by far one of my most anticipated games of 2009.

I'm having fun with it.

It's a shame though that I can't customize the controls. It feels very clunky when I want to look around and use rudder or throttle at the same time.

Voice acting during the action is repetitive and generic. But the narrator at the end of the first mission sounds just awesome.

Graphics aren't mind blowing but certainly not bad. There are some very nice details like bullet holes being visible on your wings.

Sim controls are sim alright. Got in a spin right after doing a turn. Got out of it only to get into another and crash into the ground.:lol

I've tested during one hour the IL-2 demo for 360, and so far, I'm very impressed. Take into account that I write this as a long time air sim fan, and I spent thousands of hours in many flight sims in the last two decades.

In this demo, graphics are outstanding. Virtual cockpit animates fully, with most dials operative (vertical speed indicator, slip indicator, airspeed, flaps control, engine temps, etc). Cockpit frames cast shadows, cockipt gets dark depending on position of the sun, oil stains in the windshield... the lot. Combat damage is visually displayed in your model.

Flight model seems very good, in "Sim mode" I believe is using a high fidelity mode, similar if not equal to its PC counter part. The problem is that its very hard to control the plane with the controller. You get stalls, spins... and you can recover from them with a little luck and height.

Combat in Il-2 is amazing, as always. The demo allows you to test a Spitfire MK.II against a He-111H formation, escorted by Bf.104E2... I was able to fly through heavy bomber formations without a noticeable framerate drop (it drops a little, but it stays more than fluid).

AI is good. Bombers fly in defensive formations... Bf.109's are aggressive and AI believable. As an example: I was in pursuit of a yellow nose. The dogfight was at very low altitude were the Bf.109 was able to start pulling away from me. Even at WEP power, I was not able to overtake it. So I fired a short burst in from of him. The AI pilot, seeing the tracers, made a mistake , stalling his plane and crashing to the ground.

Padlock implementation is fine, though basic.

So far, very good.

You know what, for $87 kangaroo dollars, I just might consider picking one of those up. I loved AC6, and have been looking for a reason to re-play it.

It works ok with AC6 but not great. It seems to have too much of a dead zone. It work great for me however with Project Sylpheed so it wasn't a total waste.

I used it for IL-2 and it was awesome however the demo didn't have a control guide for it (the button placements are not the same as pad) but the game dose seem to support it since all buttons are map differently.

One thing about console gaming is the lack of control customization. (that was also problem with AC6 and the Saitek stick the button all map to different location).

As for the demo, I really like it. I wish there was persistent world campaign but it seems we are just getting historical missions type. Oh well, beggar can't be chooser.

I just played this again and noticed far more great little touches.

This game gives you a feeling of flying and depth that makes all the other 360 flying games feel like you are moving a object around in space.

You really feel the planes hicup, wobble and bounce through the air, the camera is amazing and the depth of environment you feel is great.

Gonna get hours of play out of the demo and now this is one of my most look forward to games of the year.

Excellent impressions, thanks! I was waiting for someone with PC flight sim experience to chime in.

Awesomesauce! Hopefully this will fill the gap of completely retarded flight games for consoles. Is there a decent flight stick for the 360?

Yup to everything. I have 20 years of experience with flight simulation but I still can't see myself using the sim option in IL2 together with the 360 controller. The flight model in the sim mode is way too "big" for the controller sticks. And imagine it with the PS3 controller.. *shudders*

Anyway, if you are a flight sim fan and want a good console blend of a flight game this smells like the best one so far. The demo hints at a better general gaming experience than AC6 as well. Everything seems slick, solid and consistent.

The short:
Game is awesome. Day 1!

The long:
The flying model is pretty great. Feels pretty much like the PC version.

Arcade mode allows you to target enemies, and it even has a reticle leading the target for you. Basically a hand-holding mode. Or that was my impression from the tutorial, anyway, which seems to have been in arcade.

Realistic is a mix of arcade and simulation. You still see your objectives on the screen, and allies/enemies are marked on the screen, and you also get a minimap. You can still target enemies, but there's no lead-target reticle interface. You can still stall/spin very very easily. You'll still die in 2 secs if you're properly hit.

Simulation is awesome. You don't see the objectives or other planes (allied or enemy) anymore; the interface doesn't help you at all, you just need to get visual checks on them. You still have a full-screen map mode to get an idea of where your objectives are. You can't manually 'target' enemies anymore. Instead, that button now allows you to change your flaps (combat/raised/etc). You are also forced in cockpit view; no silly 3rd-person view here! Getting kills is so hard and awesome! I've lost count of how many times I've spun into the ground without any enemy assistance.

You can set your hud to full/minimal/off. Even on full in simulation mode, all you basically get is your throttle percentage/WEP, speed, altitude, and number of rockets/bombs left (IIRC, gun ammo is unlimited except as a special settings for some particular missions).

I'm using the Ace Edge flightstick, and the controls are completely different from the options menu. Here's what I've figured so far:

Throttle, of course, controls the speed up and down, and maxxing it up activates WEP. Yaw is yaw, and works well.
'L click' (forward-most button on the throttle controller) is zoom in.
LB is full map.
Back is gear up/down.
Dpad is still squad controls.
R stick is still POV.
RB zooms the camera onto your target on arcade/realistic. I think it's 'trimmer' on sim.
A is gun.
Y is flaps (or select target in arcade/realistic).
B is rockets.
I am guessing X is bombs.
R click changes the view.

I'm really really hoping for a multiplayer demo.

Demo is like the game in that you have to complete the training in Arcade before attempting Realistic or Sim.

There is a bug where the training tells you to shoot down a plane using the target camera. It will not recognize you using the target camera if you are in virtual cockpit mode. Switch to third-person at that point.

The game seems great. Arcade will be enough for me for a while as I'd like to actually complete missions, but I'll certainly try to work my way up to Realistic.

I don't preorder games very much, but it will help the publisher and developer if they get solid preorders so I'm going to do the Gamestop preorder deal (free t-shirt).

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Does anyone know if the game has a dynamic or semi-dynamic campaign? Or is it just a series of canned misisons that are considered a "campaign"?

No idea.

Upon playing a bit more, realistic and simulation are very very similar. The flight model (including stalling/spinning) appear to be the same. The main difference is the interface. Again, realistic = see all the targets/enemies/allies on the map + able to target, though that doesn't make the actual combat/flying any easier - it just allows for easier recognition of units. Simulation has flaps and trimmer, and no manual targetting, and doesn't show you where or who the other units are. The rest, as far as I've noticed, plays the same (which would be the same as the PC version).

Also, you can set the number of respawns you get in a mission, anywhere from 0 to 5 to unlimited.

I played the demo last night but I was a little tired so didn't persist. The ground textures were very nice, which made a nice change. The training was nice and brief and I can't wait to try a real mission when I'm not tired. Looking around is a chore and I wish they'd done the control setup a little differently. If I like it I might actually buy a stick.
