He starting an 1080p game is really absurd. Makes you think of how little 1080p can be.
this made me both jealous and uncomfortable

All I can think of is how 8k could accommodate, like, the entire NES library.
EDIT: I wrote that as a half joke, but if I can still do basic maths, it's actually close to that. There's enough screen estate to fit 540 256x240 games in there, NES library is around 700 titles.
I like "just because we can" type videos, but we still can barely do 4k, even on higher end PC's and let's not mention lol consoles.

Where have you been? People are playing at 4k already, even at 60fps for older games.
uhhh any high end (x70+) 10 series nvidia card comes 4k ready at playable framerates out of the box. Judging by the way benches and series jumps have been the last few years, we should have playable 4k framerates on mid tier hardware on the nvidia 11 series with high end hitting 60fps in most every game.
playable 4ks been here since maxwell for the majority of games dude.
I think it's the opposite actually. Aliasing is as big a part of IQ as any of those things you mentioned. You might have the most beautiful lighting but what use is it when you have aliasing and shimmering everywhere which breaks the immersion. High resolution gives games that smooth "Pixar" look and just brings the entire image together.

What is your definition of playable framerates? For me it is Ultra Settings
Come on now, older games don't count. CSGO doesn't count.
What is your definition of playable framerates? For me it is Ultra Settings with single GPU card with minimum frame rate of 60fps. Not average, not max, but minimum.

I love how far these guys go for the shake of our insane curiosity
wat. i dontHe is mostly a marketing hype machine getting expensive toys for free to do product demonstration.

All this 8k talk is so 2016, 32k is the real next-gen (per eye for retina VR view). Ofcourse.
/s.
The highlight was ofcourse the 1080p window being that small.
Too much bezel and no HDR, he could have done it on 1 montior
I don't think you can actually buy that one (or any other 8K tv/monitor) yet. They are just trade show prototypes. Maybe in a year or two you could order a 100" 8K screen for $100k or something.

I'm playing every game in 4K60.

Depends on how much of your FOV such a display fills. Human perception is quite difficult to quantify because it is fundamentally different than what we use in our displays. In many ways the way we reproduce vision is greater than what the eye is capable of but is necessary to trick our visual system.at 15K resolution would you need AA at all?
A Titan XP can do 60fps in many games maxed out at 4K60. Wouldn't consider it that impressive though. 4K120 is what my body craves. With low or medium settings in more demanding games, I assume?

Inspired me to try running Rise of the Tomb Raider at 8K

Have you even watched the beginning of the video? He know there is 8k,he even made a video showing us the 8k monitor in the trade show, but it's not for sale,no one one can buy it.Too much bezel and no HDR, he could have done it on 1 montior
Increasing resolution does not get rid of aliasing or make things smooth. It only increases visual sharpness.
The reason CGI looks smooth is because every pixel takes into account sample quality.
Take Toy Story for example. There was no way Pixar was doing 8K rendering in the 90s, yet compare DVD footage to Blu-ray and neither version are full of jaggies.
Even today, a lot of VFX work is still done at a 2K resolution.

Isn't 1080p totally worthless for the average consumer? I thought our eyes can't see more detail than 720pHD.
Isn't 1440p totally worthless for the average consumer? I thought our eyes can't see more detail than 1080p.

8 K is the max if our entire periphery is covered. 8K 90FPS is kind of the end game for engineers.
I don't think 2D screens are going away anytime soon. Watching TV in groups is still going to be an integral part of society and that should ensure the future of TV past VR becoming mainstream. They are having problems even broadcasting 4K in realtime. I don't see 8K live-streams ever being viable for 2D screens, because by the time the tech will be there, we will be mainly consuming VR content.
