are you telling me the gate manga might be worth reading?

Maou-jou de Oyasumi 10-22

I hope this gets adapted as a 2-5 min anime or similar

I can recommend all those, with a few reservations for Liar Game, as it has a really disappointing end.
A Silent Voice is a little jewel. It will get you to be angry and to be happy. There is nice character growth in it.
Nodame Cantabile is a nice musical love comedy. Art is somewhat lacking but the story and characters are pretty good.
Zetman is a dark hero and ant-hero story with some great artwork.
Kokou no Hito is a nice tale about man vs mountains, based on a real person, though with liberties taken. Art starts out with a few issues but it gets better and better.
Alive is deeper than one might think. It has superpowers, a bit of survival, cool characters, action etc. What makes it really worth to read though, apart from it being a nice manga, is also the dedication of the author, who kept working on it on his death bed.
Witchcraft Works has magic, nice art, cool ladies, zany situations and some cool action scenes.

UQ Holder and The Seven Deadly Sins are fun action titles. I like Deadly Sins more for the setting and art but UQ Holder has a cool main character whose positive attitude is pretty infectious.

Real Account is the best of the list, hybrid trapped in a mobile phone game x real world game type of series that continues to up the ante at each arc. A must read from Kodansha.
Thanks guys!

General content of the Gate manga is similar to the anime but it's a lot more brutal overall. The anime was scrubbed pretty clean to make a more bright, cutesy anime fantasy world but the manga and original novels are much more grimy, crap-sack world. The fighting is a lot more violent and has more gore, sex slaves are more prominent, etc

I avoided the anime because of the people calling it pro-mil propaganda and because I never quite got a handle on how it treated the fantasy elements in terms of general anime-ness. I might give the manga a shot.

Thanks Shouta!

I think another issue is that it happened to get popular right when some real-life political drama over the JSDF being able to fight wars in other countries was happening, so

Definitely give the manga a shot and see if you like it or not. The fantasy elements are probably closer to harder fantasy than regular anime fantasy stuff. The Empire in the manga also is more Roman than in the anime which I thought was pretty cool.

That might be it a bit, at least for over in Japan but it's not like that affects a lot of non-Japanese, lol.

I really REALLY disliked how they adapted the anime. I enjoy the manga a tremendous amount and like Shouta says, the best parts of it are rarely the fighting; it's almost always the politics, the reaction to Japanese technology and culture/interaction between modern and fantasy, character interactions and Ruri trying to smang on the Cobabbler.

I remember that thing about Abe trying to legalize foreign war being discussed pretty much everywhere, and it definitely was brought up in the "weeb" circles.

Plus it's the kind of comparison people'd make, right?

I only saw discussion by Japanese people in my circles myself. I think there's just still an aversion to the Japanese government and military combination still. Actually, off the top of my head, I can't really remember a Japanese entertainment product that involved the military outside of Godzilla...

Well, the main character is part of the army, and here they are the good guys.

Does that mean it's mere propaganda? Is any work of fiction with the army where they aren't bad guys propaganda? I think that's more on the eye of the beholder.

I'm more amused by it than anything; the Marines are constantly Worfed in Manga or Anime by like 16 year old girls and shit.

...though to be fair, everyone gets worfed by teenagers in everything so it's not exactly a specific occurrence.

well yeah but it's a question of overtness and of expectations going in as well I think.

Like, if I watch a police procedural, that doesn't necessarily mean that the police are going to be gleaming paragons of virtue, even if 'the police' are the protagonists

961-year old war gods and 16-year olds that combined magic and science into something even more dangerous!

A lot of what Gate does with the military is present them as normal as can be, I think. Most are just doing their job and following orders rather than be paragons of virtue or anything. For example, early on we're introduced to the red light district in the capital but the prostitutes remark that none of the army guys will bite on their advances. You find out it's because of orders that they're not allowed to rather than them being good guys more than anything.

I really liked that side story (that yet again the anime kinda rushed and didn't do a good job with). It was basically the prostitutes going "We can't pay for your medical treatments and protection except to fuck you" and the army people going "Ha ha ha nooooooooooooooooooo"

Also got some super catharsis when Lieutenant Titpunch
beat the fuck out of the Emperor's son
. That was just delightful.

Best part about that side story is that later on it's reiterated when one of the guys shows how much of a liking he's taken to the winged girl and he points out again he can't do anything other than be playful with her because of orders. He wants to so bad, lol.

Also Kuriybayashi in the anime is awful. Why did they change her design!?

I can only think of widening appeal. They ruined her design and toned down the violence to make it more accessible but it really ruins the tone of the show.

I also really REALLY like the whole deal with the ex-leader of the Bunny Girls considering
it's all of her machinations that are actually throwing the peace into disarray, ruining anything that could move stuff forward so she can have her revenge
. When they introduced her I kinda rolled my eyes a bit because it was pretty hardcore sex randomly in the manga and then as they revealed more and more about her I kinda got what they were going for by
making her seem completely broken, subservient and just eye candy and then showing she's really manipulating everyone
.

They changed her look?

Oh fucking hell. Even though the LN and manga designs are also different, they have some unifying aspects between them

The initial scene works to show how fucked up the world is too but yeah, doing that for her character works well.

Yeah, her design between the LN and manga are pretty close. The major difference is the manga artist's vision of the world is a lot more rough and thus Kuribayashi was made rougher as well. His version works really well because she's kind of the muscle of the group.

All this talk reminded me that I need to go buy the manga volumes.

I warmed up to the moe versions of the characters but Kuribayashi's was unforgivable. The part where she beats the prince just isn't as believable.

I've the same problem as Jintor with GATE, that it's a Japanese right wing propaganda (sorta).
Now you guys makes me want to read it.

Well, this is ending soon. Or they ass pull some way to undo the massive changes to the plot and multiple confessions that have been received in the past few chapters.

I actually don't know which of those is more likely.

As has already been said, you definitely should. I watched the anime after reading the manga and it was not good and you shouldn't bother with it.

Gate manga is definitely better than the anime version. Mostly because they show Itami trying to conquer a dungeon to find cure. That shit was good. I want a rpg game where we play as a ranger or navy fighting against fantasy creature.

Anne showing us why she's the best heroine in fantasy manga.

One really want to that chapter 100 ending huh?
I think the final page of this chapter was one of the most powerful scene in this manga.the payoff was worth it. That final line and Mob sobbing is pure gold.

I mean, what's even left? Maybe a final encounter with the ghost of the psychic guy and spelling out exactly what ???% is?

I bet he just got rejected but it'll all be a tsundere on-the-moment reaction from Aki.

Man, I dunno if Murata is teasing something (I doubt it) but he keeps talking about Eyeshield 21 on Twitter. Reminding us that this year is the 15th anniversary of the series, that he'd like to see another anime adaptation, he posted a few color illustrations (from the artbook)...

Gimme at least a kanzenban edition please. Please.

Please.

Wishful thinking and self fullfilment ? Check.
How a modern era country would realistically fare against a middle-age one ? Check.
Waifus ? Check.
Hilarious panel ?

Check.

That panel kills me every time.

The entire sequence and that panel seemed a little surreal the first time I read it but when I thought about it, I figured out the entire reason it felt weird was my perception of Japan's military and the military of other coutnries, heh. Even that panel made a little more sense considering how diverse the US military will be compared to a Russian or Chinese military. Doesn't stop the panel from being hilarious though.

Anyway as I was picking up the Gate manga from Amazon JP I saw a title that caught my eye. The title was Seishokuki and yeah...this manga is really fucking nuts. For anyone unfamiliar with it, this series is about a high school girl gets caught up in an invasion of aliens that look like animal suits. They have fluids that cause people's libidos to go nuts. Their objective is to suck the "essence" out of women, yeah... From there, it's basically tons of lewd acts, fluids, and tentacles everywhere and often in public as the story progresses. It's printed in Young Champion Retsu, which basically features non-explicit porn series, so I guess it's not surprising. So yeah, this is basically porn with a crazy, silly story.

What is a little surprising is that it's actually kinda interesting and kept me going from chapter to chapter. Before I knew it, all I had read all 8 volumes that were out, oof. It's been a while since I've read a series that just made go wtf so I had to post about it.
