New Dead or Alive 5 footage. (Update 2: Releasing Worldwide In September)

That Hitomi pic is going to give me nightmares. lol. Looks horrible.

I've mentioned it before, but she really reminds me of Kevin McDonald...

That's why I hope they keep the majority of that system in place for DOA5. Why online fighting systems have been regressing in features for the past six-ish years is beyond me.

I hope they found ways to expand the features even more. It's amazing how good it was online. Shit even in 2011 fighters, if one guy leaves a room in MvC3U, nobody can watch the current match. I don't know if DoA4 was just this far ahead of its time, or if all these other devs just didn't give a shit about online...but to those who never played DoA4, I simply say: "Ignorance must be bliss"...because those of us who played the hell out of DoA4 have been suffering with the lack of online features for all the fighting games that followed it, up to and through present day.

I also hope that the team behind DOA5 can keep lag under control this time around, though. It was pretty commonplace to have matches devolve into a slideshow. I don't know how prevalent this is in other fighting games but it could get really bad in DOA4, moreso than I remember from DOA2U.

it can get really bad in any fighting game that came out this generation. This was in no way exclusive to DoA4. In fact, I'd say it was less of an issue in DoA4 (2005) than it is in MvC3U (2011/2012).

Well... Itagaki is no longer around so they are free to sell out his daughters all they want.

Waitaminute....

My favorite part of any of the DoA beach games was this ESRB description:

This is a video game in which users watch grown women dressed in G-string bikinis jiggle their breasts while on a two-week vacation. Women's breasts and butts will sway while playing volleyball, while hopping across cushions, while pole dancing, while posing on the ground, by the pool, on the beach, in front of the camera. There are other activities: Users can gamble inside a casino to win credits for shopping; they can purchase bathing suits, sunglasses, hats, clothing at an island shop; they can "gift" these items to eight other women in hopes of winning their friendship, in hopes of playing more volleyball. And as relationships blossom from the gift-giving and volleyball, users may get closer to the women, having earned their trust and confidence: users will then be prompted to zoom-in on their friends' nearly-naked bodies, snap dozens of photos, and view them in the hotel later that night. Parents and consumers should know that the game contains a fair amount of "cheesy," and at times, creepy voyeurism—especially when users have complete rotate-pan-zoom control; but the game also contains bizarre, misguided notions of what women really want (if given two weeks, paid vacation, island resort)—Paradise cannot mean straddling felled tree trunks in dental-floss thongs.

LOL! Brilliant.

Just to be clear, that was the description for the PSP game, and it's not longer up at ESRB's site. Someone edited it to be a bit tamer and less opinionated shortly after that description started to make it's rounds in the press.

Yup.
Personally I think unlockables is extremely important in fighting games. I generally don't care much about the look of the costumes, and I would never buy them as dlc, I just want some stuff to unlock so that there is some challenge and meaning to play single player too. I hope they have some unlockable characters too.

As someone who can't stand single player in a fighting game I have to disagree. I understand the "need" for unlockable content, but it should never be characters.

I should also be able to unlock everything by playing online or VS mode. And unlocking that way shouldn't take me hundreds of hours like it does in SCV (talking about titles and stuff, not characters).

Essentially, if I want to ignore the single player, I should still be able to unlock everything within 50 hours of play time.

Starting to read the pattern of the enemy and to "guess" with more and more certainty when he's going for a low attack etc. is one of the most fun parts in DOA.

Competitive players don't "guess" in this instance. I wait until I see the low, then block accordingly. This doesn't work online, because the online in DOA is lacking (especially compared to more recent fighting games - SC5), but I do this all day offline. It's actually one of the main reasons online play is so frustrating for competitive players, no matter how good the connection is.

I can't think of a single another series that has matched the features of DoA2U, an XBOX game. haha

^This. I think Team Ninja went backward from DOA2U to DOA4 in terms of online features.

I don't want a 16-man room unless at least 8 of those spots are spectator only. I also don't want the elaborate lobbies unless I can wait in line for my turn while in the lobby (this was not possible in DOA4). It was also annoying to have to "enter the line" after going into a room. So you had to join the room, then take an extra step to wait in line for your match.

It would also be nice if you could join your friend's rooms without needing an invite. This was great in DOA2U because you'd see a friend log in, then just join their room. In DOA4 you have to wait for an invite, or ask for an invite.

SC5 has the best online of any fighting game to date. I would love for DOA5 to play as well as SC5 does online.

I never noticed this, but now that you mention it, it's the same in every fighting game that I can think of. Do you think it's something to do with XBL/PSN?

Yup. I've hated playing online in every fighting game until SC5's.

we talking about netcode/lag minimization or online features and play modes?

because I hadn't heard it was matching DoA4 in online features...but I've heard glowing comments about the relatively lag-free matches.

This one.

Oh, special shoutout to VF5. That game had really nice online, but it still felt pretty different from offline to me.

Definitely the former. Online in SC5 is AH-Mazing.

I was looking at some off screen grabs:

Do I see 3 different outfits for Ayane, or am I just seeing things?

Here, too.

Just to note, I haven't touched SP in SC5, and just played player and ranked matches, and I am at at level 60 something. I heard you got all the important pieces at 53, so all I have left to 99 I guess is tattoos/stickers/titles and crap like that. I think SC5 is reasonable. I got to 53 relatively fast through normal play.

SC4 was way worse if my memory is correct, as you only unlocked the CAS parts in that story mode/dungeon thing they had.

Wow, netcode in SCV is actually good? Nice. It's about friggin time. I hated SCIV. I'm expecting quite a bit out of DOAV. Hope they eventually throw us non preordering plebes a bone and release a Free demo

I'm hoping for the return of natural combos. DoA4 had a few, and then they got rid of them with a patch. DoA3 had a lot of them as well.

Side throws would be pimp.

4.1 actually had a few true combos slip through the cracks, which surprisingly enough, were found mainly in the lower tier characters. Doa:D on the other hand has absolutely none, and it makes every character (outside of Ryu) play worse.

It was nice to see a sidestep in there. Thanks for pointing that out, Skilletor. Hopefully they add side throws and side hit situations to go along with this new lateral movement.

I'm still slightly concerned about the sidestep. It was actually shown for the first time last week during the Shimbori interview, but it was really hard to spot because it tracked the opponent. Instead of Ayane circling to Ryu's side, she sidesteps out and still ends up face to face with him.

Gadget Hackwrench is a regular girl now? Really? REALLY?

I was under the impression she was a cartoon mouse.

That's her name? I never knew. hahahaha

It happens at 1:43 after Ayane is knocked off the wall. I just realised though that Ryu steps in the same direction (which keeps them aligned, I guess?). Either way, the sidestep looks to happen really quickly, and seems to resemble a crouch dash (but to the side of the opponent).

edit: ...or what Master Thespian said ^

I'm definitely interested i what's been shown so far. I was always a huge fan of DOA, with DOA2: Hardcore for the PS2 being the pinnacle for me (and one of my personal favourite gaming memories). I didn't like the series as much once it went Xbox-exclusive (though it was certainly pretty), so I'm glad to have it back on a PS3 controller.

It's quite fascinating really, with the new more realistic designs in both DOA5 and Tomb Raider it's almost as if game designers are finally starting to grow up a little. It was about time. Can't wait to get to play a doa without getting sour comments at home. The combination of revealing clothes, huge bouncy boobs, squeeky voices and doll like faces has been a bit too much at times.
I wonder if the new design is Team Ninja's own idea or if they've consulted some western character designer or something like that?

Are those not in DOA5? Their faces are slightly more realistic but everything else is about a notch lower at best.

I think they look a lot more "respectable" now. They actually look really good now imo. But the old design is just odd. No hips, no butt, gigantic boobs, kids face. Odd.

Nice video, but I wish it was a different stage. And yeah, Hitomi definitely needs a visual upgrade. At least, facially.

I was referring to netcode, but I think it goes for both.

In SC5 you've got regional lobbies with online tournaments (that includes stat tracking) or casual play, 6 player lobbies with only a 10 second delay if someone is idle, and preset room types (serious business, casual play, etc.) in addition to custom room titles.

You can quickly see how many private slots there are in a room, the online ranking is about as accurate as you're going to get with an online fighting game (although you can still get to A-rank without being a top player), and you can select up to 4 rivals to compare stats when you're online or offline.

To add to all of this, the game automatically saves your last 8 online player matches, you can upload any ranked matches immediately following the match, and on PS3 you can save any of the matches to your hard drive, transfer them to a PC and upload to Youtube.
